“Shocking, disturbing, and utterly original.” —Paula Hawkins, #1 New York Times bestselling author

This “haunting and poignant tale, one that won’t be easy to forget any time soon” (Mystery and Suspense Magazine), follows an enigmatic woman confronting her unknown past—from internationally bestselling author Liz Nugent.

Reclusive Sally Diamond is thrust into the media spotlight when she tries to incinerate her dead father, causing widespread outrage. Now she’s the center of attention, not only from hungry reporters and police detectives, but also a sinister voice from a past she does not remember. As she begins to discover the repressed memories of her horrific early childhood, Sally steps into the world for the first time, making new friends, big decisions, and learning that people don’t always mean what they say.

But who is the man observing Sally from the other side of the world, and why does he call her Mary? And why does her new neighbor seem to be obsessed with her? Sally’s trust issues are about to be severely challenged in this “truly incredible reading experience” (Lisa Jewell, #1 New York Times bestselling author).

Title: Brilliantly Twisted, but the Ending Falls Flat
Review: I really enjoyed Strange Sally Diamond. It’s dark, gripping, and keeps you hooked with its unique protagonist and unsettling twists. The story is strong throughout, but the ending didn’t land as well for me—it felt a bit rushed and not as impactful as I hoped. Still, it’s a solid read if you’re into psychological thrillers.

Title: Book Weather Report: Mostly Disturbing with Chance of Hopefullness
Review: I like stories about strange people. Heck, I'm strange people, and everyone I know is strange. Sally Diamond, fits right in. Her social and emotional development was profoundly disrupted by childhood trauma, she's hyper-smart and a gifted musician, and she sees the world through eyes both clearer and more clouded than most. She's been hidden away from the world, but she's coming into her own.If that was all there was to it, the basic Heidi story, misanthrope meets mankind and finds it not that bad, I'd have been happy. But it's not, which makes the book disturbing, which makes it more layered, and much more real.Sally (not her birth name, btw) has a horrific backstory, that goes back before her birth, which we get to explore along with her as she discovers what had been kept from her until the death of her adopted father, a psychiatrist who always joked that when he died she should just take him out with the trash.Which is not the thing to joke about with a profoundly autistic/emotionally disconnected/very odd person, and he totally should have known better. So maybe he wouldn't have wound up in the barn incinerator which causes no end of trouble, and begins Sally(again, not her birth name)'s journey of discovery and development.I note that there are four significant men who affect her life, and though none of them see themselves as monsters, there are some very dark commonalities between them. OK, one of them is only an obsessed liar, not really a monster, but still. Mostly Sally gets to connect with supportive women unless they're racist or otherwise mean-spirited, and there is at least one supportive male, but he's also an outsider by virtue of being a Nigerian immigrant in rural Ireland.Sally's psychological struggles are written with terrific insight, and her issues, especially with repressed anger and explosive rage, felt spot on. There was never a point where I didn't root for her, and even though she's only a character in a book, I was inspired by her courage to face the world and her own demons.Strange Sally Diamond isn't the book I hoped it would be, which would have been simpler and more saccharine but was, like the character, its own story and all the more powerful for it.

Title: 4.5 stars but I can’t recommend it
Review: Other reviewers said it was hard to describe. They were right. It held my interest until the last page. But, would I recommend it? Probably not. It was twisty and turny. It was well-written. The characters were well developed. It was just cringey. I’ve certainly read books that were creepier, more explicit, scarier, and more thrilling. At times, this had some of that too. But one story/kidnapping sort of duplicated and folded over on itself and I had to keep reminding myself which bad guy we were talking about. And when the victim became the bad guy I was flummoxed whether I liked him or didn’t like him. It wasn’t meant to have a satisfying or happy ending. So why will I give it 4.5 stars and not recommend it? I have no idea.

Title: A tale of a life undo and the path back
Review: I read Strange Sally Diamond on the recommendation of someone whose opinion I trusted. I owe her a thank you note. This was one of my favorite reads of 2024. I went in thinking the story might have been about a serial killer or even a supernatural thriller but turned out to be an unforgetable, affecting tale of how many lives can undone by one immoral person. Sally Diamond is someone you probably wouldn't like if you encountered them in real life. In the book you learn of her sorrowful circumstances and it's hard not to admire her even with the many set backs she has. Sally's mostly forgotten past slowly comes to light in a sad, dark, and even at times comical narrative. The author has written a poignant story that feels like it was ripped from someone's life and will remain with me for a very long time. I can not reveal too much of the serpentine tale without ruining the experience for some future reader so just read this book.

Title: Interesting read!
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. But the ending stopped me from giving it a 5. Do check your trigger warnings. In part II of the novel, it takes a dark turn, and you learn the traumatic upbringing of Sally. Nevertheless, I recommend this novel. It is a great introduction to a psychological-mystery-thriller- sometimes comical type of genre. I guarantee you will enjoy it.

Review: What a tragic story! It was well written and the characters had depth. I cared deeply about the story. I couldn’t put it down. The ending was disappointing but not all endings are happy or satisfying.

Review: Ashamed to say that in the past I have tended to avoid Irish authors (bad school memories). However, after ‘Strange Sally Diamond’ I have been getting into Claire Keegan, Colm Toibín, Graham Norton, etc. ‘Strange Sally Diamond’ is a gem. Read it through in a few hours.
