- Beautifully illustrated with atmospheric paintings and some of the delightful sketches that accompanied early editions, The Mysteries of Udolpho is a quintessential Gothic romance featuring supernatural occurrences, a foreboding castle, a persecuted heroine, and physical and psychological terror. - It was the fourth and most successful of Radcliffe's novels and, despite being first published over two centuries ago, it remains just as gripping for today's modern readers as it would have been all those years ago. - This meticulous edition from Heritage Illustrated Publishing is a faithful reproduction of the original text.

Title: Classic Read
Review: If you like classic literature, this book is a great read. I discovered the author through another timeless classic I was reading; this book was referenced, so I downloaded it to my Kindle and am enjoying it tremendously. Set in late 1700's Europe, the scenery descriptions are breathtaking and detailed. The characters are timeless and range from noble, admirable individuals to scheming, dark individuals who make life difficult to unbearable. The details of the Castle Udolpho are intriguing and make the reader feel almost as though they are there.I am very happy to have discovered this author and rather surprised I had not heard of her previously. I definitely will be downloading some of her other works in the future.

Title: Worthwhile read
Review: Although it is very wordy (and lacking the lines of promised poetry...Amazon's fault?), it is a wonderful depiction of true gothic romance. If you enjoy 'Northanger Abbey' by Jane Austen, you will feel just like Catherine Morland as you read this!

Title: Interesting Historical Curiosity
Review: English romantic novels have a justifiably poor reputation as literature, which Udolpho confirms. The style is turgid and repetitive, and the plot ridiculous and slow-moving. Radcliffe has a limited vocabulary, using the word "sublime" as a repeated mantra, which makes the endless descriptions of ennobling mountain landscapes a slog to read. On the positive side, though Udolpho isn't ahead of its time, it is progressive. It deals very seriously with the rationalist's crises of faith, with the ethical dilemmas facing someone trying to lead a just life, with the need to face mortality, with religious tolerance, and with the social constraints placed on women. It is also scientific and rationalist, as well as romantic (following Goethe): just as Jane Austen ridiculed the Gothic, Radcliffe ridicules spiritualism: every supernatural appearance has a mundane reality behind it. Udolfpho is remembered today only because Jane Austen criticized it in Northanger Abbey, but for anyone interested in English romanticism or the cultural history of the late 18th Century, it is worth reading.

Title: Wonderful Intriguing Mystery!
Review: The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Ward Radcliffe is a wonderful intriguing mystery. I enjoyed it very much; and, will read and/or listen to it again! Alisonâs narration was very, very good! I had a hard time putting it down. I also loved the poetry in-between chapters; because it is really nice. I recommend this enjoyable read to others.

Title: This edition is clearly pirated
Review: The first 3 pages had so many errors in English & so many anachronisms that it swiftly became clear that this version is a Google translation from a version of Mysteries of Udolpho sold in another language. Itâs very bad practice for Amazon to sell pirated texts on this website & still worse practice to pirate a translatorâs hard work.

Title: A milestone book in English literature
Review: Udolpho is a must-read for everyone remotely interested in English literature. It belongs to the early startup of the Romantic novels, where mrs Radcliffe set an example for later famous writers as Austen (note her Northanger Abbey) and her contemporaries. The story itself is well built, with pleasantly reading language. Yet it is so thrilling that it commands your attention until the last pages: A true gothic novel.

Title: Damsel In Distress
Review: As a Jane Austen fan I had looked for the 'Mysteries of Udolpho' for years. I was so pleased to find a version of this very old novel for my Kindle. The writing style is great, taking you right into the action. The description of scenery is wonderful too. The plot devices are a little heavy handed though. Would a man suffering from a serious disease take a pleasure trip through rugged terrain exposing his beloved daughter to every peril? He would if the author wanted to make the heroine a damsel in distress.I give this novel four stars for it's historical research value and it's writing style. But to be honest, I have yet to finish the book. Things are so thickly broadcasted that I already know the ending. Still if you are a Jane Austen fan you just have to get this, right?

Title: The "Twilight" of the 18th Century (Not a Compliment)
Review: It took me about three weeks to read this novel in its entirety, and those three weeks were generally very long ones. I am a big fan of the gothic literary genre, and but I am not in any way whatsoever a fan of Anne Ward Radcliffeâs technique for explaining the supernatural out of the supernatural. Moreover, I felt no connection to any of the various characters in The Mysteries of Udolpho. Some say the best features of Radcliffeâs six novels are her romantic descriptions of natural landscapes, but I found it rather annoying that Radcliffe herself had never personally glimpsed any of the French and Italian vistas she spends so many pages describing in Udolpho. Moreover, all those descriptions could have been neatly trimmed to make the novel shorter and more succinct. As it is, you the reader will spend a long time traveling through woods and mountains about which the author had only herself read in contemporary travel pieces. Emily St. Aubertâs characterization is impossible to relate to today. Contemporary notions of moral purity and chastity are upheld, and are so contrary to our modern ideas regarding the true nature of human thoughts and desires, that I imagine not even little girls today will be able to relate well to how Emily feels and acts. The characterization of her lover Valancourt may be even worse. Excessive sentimentality on his part will make you the reader laugh aloud to consider how some in the 18th century would cherish such melodrama from the lips and hearts of grown men, inexperienced or not. The most interesting aspect of Valancourt may be that he spent some time gaming it up in Paris, but then returns to his beloved Emily to lament his âvicious wrongdoings.âThis novel could have used more vice, and the most vicious character of all does not make for a truly interesting villain. Montoniâs castle is far more intriguing than Signor Montoni himself, who is rather one-dimensional.Two years after Udolpho was published, came Matthew Gregory Lewisâ Ambrosio, or the Monk: A Romance. That is a novel which I highly recommend to those curious to find excellent 18th century gothic fiction. That novel is full of the supernatural horror that Radcliffeâs explanations of terror fail to provoke.

Review: Iâm sure this book is great but thereâs no way Iâll be able to read it. Publisher has condensed a 600+ page book into 200 pages. Illustrations are teeny black and white photos that look nothing like the cover promises.Would return but would be a waste of time and more money. Buy a more expensive, well formatted copy is my advice.

Finalmente, "The Mysteries of Udolpho" redimensiona a leitura do romance "Northanger Abbey", de Jane Austen.
