THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Named a summer book to watch by The Washington Post, Boston Globe, USA Today, Oprah, Paste, Country Living, Good Housekeeping, and Nerd Daily

"Propulsive ... a dizzying Gothic whodunit."
—New York Times Book Review

Bestselling author Riley Sager returns with a Gothic chiller about a young caregiver assigned to work for a woman accused of a Lizzie Borden-like massacre decades earlier.

At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life

It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—I want to tell you everything.

“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead

As Kit helps Lenora write about the events leading to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear there’s more to the tale than people know. But when new details about her predecessor’s departure come to light, Kit starts to suspect Lenora might not be telling the complete truth—and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care could be far more dangerous than she first thought.

Title: Plot twist after plot twist after plot twist
Review: Just when I thought I had the ending figured out, this book hit me with another plot twist. I loved it. It was fast paced, well-written, and the plot was the perfect attention grabber. There was the perfect amount of character backstory and development. The descriptions made me feel like I was in the book with the characters watching it all play out. The ending had the biggest twist of all and I truly could not put this book down until I finished it.I bought the paperback version and it was in perfect condition upon arrival.

Title: HOLY PLOT TWIST
Review: I really don’t feel like I can’t type a single thought without giving anything away. All I can say is WHAT A PLOT TWIST. Like 7 of them. Every time I thought I was catching on to something I was proven wrong. My jaw continuously hit the floor.Side note: when the initial major plot twist comes there was a part of me that actually thought the author messed up the story line and I planned to go back to confirm the error but all is explained at the end and comes full circle.Absolutely worth the read my entire book club loved this one!

Title: For me, did not live up to the hype.
Review: I loved how this book began and the creepy vibe be it gave, but I was tired of all the surprises by the end. I just kept reading because I had already invested a day in this book. I do like that it ended on a Hope-ful note.

Title: SO GOOD
Review: I don’t normally write product reviews, but I can’t help but boast about how GOOD this book is & how great the author is.Riley Sager has become one of my favorite authors. His books have you thinking you know exactly what’s going on & what’s going to happen & then there’s a twist (or two or three) that you never would have thought of. This is the first book of his I’ve read & it was SO GOOD. Probably my favorite read of the year, beating out The Silent Patient. The House Across the Lake has the same twist that this book did - unsuspecting!! While you’re reading, you think you know exactly what’s going on & then - multiple times - he blows your mind with new twists.I HIGHLY recommend this book - & any of his books - to anyone looking for a thriller suspense book that will keep you on the edge of your seat & keep you guessing until THE VERY LAST PAGE!
