"Natalie McDonald-Perkins' debut book, "Best in Me," is one that will linger within your soul for days, months, and years to come. This book reignites the senses through the use of poetry. Her intentional and perfectly crafted words take every adult on a nostalgic journey, forcing one to reexamine childhood wounds, at the hands of unkind people. While Perkins invites us into the lives of nine multicultural children, she effortlessly uses the power of language to weave a common thread that will resonate with children across the world, as well as the child that still lives within every adult. As you flip through the pages of this book and get lost in the words, Perkins will subconsciously challenge you to initiate a dialogue with your children and students. Step up and rise to Perkins' challenge, by first, owning this book, and gifting it to the ones you love. This book belongs within EVERY child's personal library and EVERY school library across the world. Dare to look within yourself and discover and/or rediscover the best in YOU!" -Elementary School Teacher

Title: Fantastic book for discussing feelings of not fitting in, plus supporting others who feel that way
Review: Iâll come straight out and admit, before I read this book I thought it was going to be yet another wholesome âyou-can-do-itâ message. Nothing wrong with that, but itâs not the most effective way to reach a child. Boy was I wrong â this book is fantastic! This is the story of a grade-school class going through an exercise where each child shares a poem about what makes them special. One by one, each student stands up and tells the class about themself. This is accompanied by the childâs feelings of nervousness, as well as the high-fives and other supportive messages they give each other afterward. It features a diverse group of children, with a variety of issues theyâve been picked on about, and their affirmations that these details donât define them or their value. I love it!This book was written by an elementary-school teacher, and it shows. It would be excellent for using in class as the introduction to a class exercise doing the exact same thing. It would also be an aid to parents and family for talking with children who are feeling excluded or bullied. Hearing the children in the book open up about their inner concerns would help any child do the same. It is also good for reminding any child to step up in defense of bullied children. I would recommend this book for any child or classroom, kindergarten through grade 5 (ages 5-11) â though a bit better for the later grades whoâd be better equipped to write their own poems or essays about their own differences.

Title: great for all ages
Review: I love everything about this book, from the title "Best in Me" to the heart used on the "i" for the word in.I love that so many children will ne able to see themselves in this book, within illustrations, scenarios, words and emotions. So many of us can relate to the experiences in this book, yes even us adults. As a teacher and a parent I feel honored to own this book and share it with so many. I have 4 children ages 13, 12, 9 and 2 and they all gained from reading this book, several times-everytime learning/seeing/thinking something new. I really love the poetry in this book, it really feeds my soul and inspires me. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and i can see this book as a movie/episode in my mind while also enjoying it as a book. I look forward to Natalie Mcdonald-Perkins writing more books for the world to read, share, learn and grow.

Title: Best in Me is a new favorite
Review: I love this book so much! Kudos to the illustrator who brought the author's words to life. An excellent job is done by the author who is an elementary school teacher and knows first hand what children are bullied for. Although the book is about overcoming bullying, children will learn about embracing differences, writing poetry, garner new vocabulary words, and learn how to affirm themselves daily (I am strong, I am brave). I was impressed with the book cover and it only kept getting better The dedication was nicely written and formatted. The characters are very inclusive and diverse not just in race and gender, but also ability and accessories. I also liked the names of the character. I already recommended to my friends because one has a child named Justice and the other has a daughter with a speech impediment.

Title: A Beautiful Book!
Review: As a therapist for children, I look forward to using this book as a resource! I love how the children in the story use poetry to share their inner most thoughts and feelings with one another. The children (as well as little readers) are able to see a glimpse into one anotherâs hearts and minds and this process helps them to grow self-confidence as well as empathy for others. This is a wonderful story that highlights self-esteem, inclusion and kindness for others!

Title: Overcoming fears.
Review: Loved this book. What a wonderful story about embracing our differences. This book teaches children to love who they are and not to be afraid of their beliefs and cultures. It also teaches them to embrace other cultures. It was also interesting to see how supportive they were of each other. When they thought they were alone they has the support of their friends. I definitely recommend this book.

Title: Inclusive childrenâs book for your bookshelf
Review: I am lucky to have a copy of this inclusive book written by an elementary school teacher! This book is an absolute gem. My son and I both love the story and the beautiful, brightly-colored illustrations. As a school counselor, I like that the premise of this story includes the school counselor as a guide who helps the students embrace and explore who they are. This book is perfect for home or the classroom, so I bought two- one for home and one for my office!

Title: Must read children's book about individuality
Review: This wonderful children's book is ideal for teachers to share with their class at the beginning of the school year. It promotes acceptance and immediately puts an end to the possibility of bullying being an issue. We all need to talk about what makes us unique as individuals, and addresses any misconception or curiosity. This book helps the children see each other in a new light as friends.

Review: I loved the idea of the class teacher leading every child to share their unique story. Since the author is an educator, it was evident she wanted to bring attention to the diversity in classrooms and differentiated learning needs and abilities. It is empowering for children to read about other children's struggles, challenges and perseverance too. A beautiful read!
