In the golden years of professional football, one team and one coach reigned supreme: the 1960s Green Bay Packers, and the fiery Vince Lombardi.

Run to Daylight! is Lombardi’s own diary of a week at the helm of that magnificent club. Together with legendary sports-journalist, W.C. Heinz, Lombardi takes us from the first review of game films on Monday right through the final gun on Sunday afternoon. We see the planning, the plotting, the practice and the pain as forty-plus men come together to form that precision unit that makes for winning football. Lombardi gives us his views on life, the game, coaching, success, family, and the famed “Lombardi Sweep.”

Now, in this anniversary edition, with a special foreword by David Maraniss, we are once again reminded of the passion and power behind America's greatest game. Written in W.C. Heinz’s inimitable style, Run to Daylight! is part diary, part philosophy text, part coaches manual. Here, is professional football at its best.

Title: This book is about so much more that football . . .
Review: An excellent book regarding not just football, but how to think and act throughout the day. An interesting look into 60's football from the perspective on the inside. The interaction of the coaches between themselves and the honest opinions of the coaches toward their players and each other is a refreshing change from the lack of honesty permeating professional sports today. The strong points of the book hinge upon the "life statements" made by the author regarding the play of the game, but life in general. The emphasis on honesty, equity, and hard work have turned the book (for me) from a historical account of 1960's football to how to look at life. A highly recommended read.

Title: Great book, regrettable editing
Review: I had an older edition of this classic, read it perhaps 4 times then lost it! Reordered this latest version and noticed a few unfortunate changes. It’s still an enthralling account of a typical week in the life of Vince Lombardi, on the verge of greatness in 1962. The original book didn’t reveal the name of the opposing team the Packers were preparing to play for the divisional lead (it was the Detroit Lions) or names of the opposing players (like Alex Karras) which always struck me as a great editorial choice. It did include several pages of actions photos from the game, and—most interesting to hard core football geeks like me—quite a few offensive play diagrams in the text highlighting Lombardi’s plans for attacking the Lions, including the famous Packer sweep. Sadly, this edition contains none of the pictures, leaves out all but a few of the diagrams (poorly printed and moved to the appendix), and removes all mystery (and the fun of guessing the opponent and their names) by filling in the missing details. So, five stars for the well told story, minus one star for the heavy-handed editors trying to save a few bucks on printing costs.

Title: If you are a Packer's fan, you have to love this.
Review: This is unvarnished, from the horse's mouth, week-in-the-life Lombardi. Well, maybe it's varnished a little. It is, after all, ghost-written by the author of "MASH", but that just means it's probably a bit better written than your average collection of Lombardi-isms.I liked that the book is not all rah-rah. You see Lombardi's exhaustion, how the season takes a toll on him, how he's unsure of his decisions. You don't just see the "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing" cartoon that has come down to us.The NFL pressure-cooker coaching life must be hard on a person, and you get a glimpse of it here. Lombardi died tragically young, only 57, from digestive complaints that turned out to be aggressive cancer. It was one battle that, despite all his feistiness, he could not win. And you're left wondering if a life dedicated to perfectionism, to strife, is ultimately a destructive monument. However you answer such questions, the fact that this book raises them makes it the best sort of autobiography. Thanks Vince & thanks Mr. Heinz for being the midwife.

Title: Great book
Review: Really enjoyed this book. You get to see Lombardi as somebody other than the tough old coach yelling at his players.

Title: Great book
Review: The book is a classic. The insight, pictures, even just the look of the pages themselves. Throw back to the era. I only gave a 3 star because I was disappointed, twice, that the book arrived without the dust cover. The picture on the cover is classic.
