Discover how you can make index funds and ETFs work for you without falling into the usual traps.
Are you lured into the index fund game without knowing what you are actually investing in and who really profits from your monthly contributions? Tired of always being on the losing end of the money game while fund providers reap their profits? Torn between hardened critiques and over-jubilant proponents?
With the ever-growing number of index funds and ETFs, it's no wonder that many retail investors are getting lost and confused. They simply don't understand what they are getting into, many times underestimating the real fees they end up paying even with "low cost" index funds and overestimating the returns they hope to achieve.
How have they become so popular?
Index funds and ETFs have seen stratospheric growth since the collapse of 2008 - benefitting from computerized trading, quantitative forms of investment management, and lack of alternatives.
Today, no matter where you look, the gospel of index fund investing has been taken to heart by the media and the masses alike. For the mass consumer, apparently, this form of passive investing is far superior - even revolutionary. But the voices of professional critics get ever louder and more abstruse stopping short of calling them the "devil's work". What is the truth? How exactly do index funds work? Are they really the sure bet they're made out to be or the path to poverty?

Title: Very insightful book; Came at just the right time.
Review: I've ridden this bull stock market for the past 9 years and have made a large profit. But, in the recent months I have gotten more and more concerned about a future bear stock market and what that would do to my profits. Further, I tried talking with my investment adviser who charges me 1.5%. I tried to get her to do a more conservative portfolio. Her only advice was to wait it out and keep on going. It seems like a dumb plan to me.So, I fired her, bought several investing books and started to read. I quickly became lost in all the possibilities and paralyzed with fear that I'd do the wrong thing.David's book was the most simple, most insightful book of all that I read. I feel confident applying the plan he laid out. Many thanks!

Title: It's not all roses in the passive investment land
Review: Excellent book. I recently decided to invest some of my cash in equity via index funds. I've read few books about passive investment and they all appeal to my way of thinking. However, I got the feeling that after you read one book about passive investment, you read them all. They all sounds very familiar and repeat basically the same thing: "buy and hold diversified market and in the long run that market will keep going up".While this sounds awesome, I was missing the counter arguments which non of these books even hinted about. Reading David's book, I now understand better the dangers, risks and possible gotchas of passive investment. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about the cons and not just the pros of passive investing.

Title: A Timely and Understandable Book on Passive Investing
Review: I was recently advised to put almost all of my cash and retirement funds in a variety of mutual funds, ETFs and non-investment grade bonds. I didn't because, among other things, I didn't understand the investment products. Thanks to this book, now I do and will be staying in cash and short term securities. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand passive investing, which is being touted by a number of popular financial blogs. I also appreciate the reasonable and balanced recommendations at the conclusion of the book, including the suggestion that this type of investing is not for everyone.

Title: Not for the beginner...
Review: Perhaps I'm being a little unfair by giving this book three stars. I bought this book with the intention of learning how ETF's/Index Funds work and what they are exactly. Based off the title, I think I fairly expected this. I docked two stars because I feel like as a very-much beginner investor a huge portion of the content in this book made no sense to me. I think before reading this I need to read something titled "Finance Jargon for Idiots." If you don't have a strong foundation to work off and can't delineate securities, from mutual funds or define DCA, hedge funds, NAV, etc. then I would recommend a more rudimentary text. I do think this is a decent book overall. I especially liked the author's view on the financial world as it relates to the retail investor. I'll probably come back to this book once I've learned a little more about finance.

Title: Very Illuminating
Review: David adeptly pulls back the curtain on the Index/ETF world and give retail investors a clear look at the good, the bad and the ugly. Most helpful for me was his challenging me to consider whether Wall St was even appropriate for my own situation, and if it was, how I could best use ETF's in a more sensible way to improve my normally awful returns in the equities market. Really appreciated his no-nonsense approach to a complex subject and how he wove the advise and commentary of other financial giants (eg. Graham, Buffet, Munger, Bogle, etc) into his narrative. Really enjoyed the book!

Title: Interesting - Confusing - Relative
Review: Interesting read. Informative, but am still curious what, if any, real message was intended relative to the value of indexes/ETFs relative to more traditional investments. Guess he was leaving that up to the reader. I was intending to buy indexes/ETF, and the book did not dissuade me. But I did leave with a gem that helped me in my specific situation - that's it's OK to sit on cash for awhile when what you're wanting to invest in is at an all time high.

Review: This book is great intro to what ETFs are NOT and importantly a warning that ETFs will not give you the security you are looking for. This book is NOT going to give you a list of ETF to invest in or a formula or framework to use to identify to invest in ETFs.So while the book does provide an answer to âWhat they areâ it probably doesnât give a good answer to the second part of âhow to make it work for youâ

Review: The kindle price for several of Schneider's titles, including this one are so low they themselves are examples of true value investing. The well referenced content is more generous and genuine than many puffed up tombs priced with another zero on the end. While pretty general in specific guidance, his take on cap weighted indexes and funds that supposedly passively deliver their returns is both educational and refreshing. He is not saying a pox on them, far from it. But it is a buyer-be-aware caution. Not just for funds but for stock equities in general. Buy and Hold mainly indexes and your eggs are far more heavily weighted in a basket of transient high flyers and bubbles than the "what can go wrong?" camp would have you believe. Funds do have enormous benefits. But any counsel that helps ordinary citizens resist the common siren call to tie most your hard earned nest egg to their fate and then ride them right to the rocks is to the good.Buy the book and other's like it.
