Title: Really nice, well-made, great smell
Review: This was a nice experience overall and it seems well-made. I wanted to try a traditional igusa mat for a long time and finally got one. I put it on top of my Japanese futon (which was right on top of my western mattress). The smell was nice and pretty gentle. Hard to describe. Grassy, like a nice hay. It looked well-made and was smooth, easy to fold. The only thing is, I have allergies to all kinds of things like pollen/hay/certain grasses and I think that this igusa mat triggered them so I woke up with some sniffling and minor allergy symptoms. It could have also been a combination of other springtime allergies causing post nasal drip, I don't want to put the blame solely on this mat. In the end, I decided it's best for me to not sleep with it anymore...so if you're very sensitive or have allergies to a lot of things like me, it might not work for you as a mattress. But it was lovely to fall asleep to at night and the smell was comforting, it would work as a floor mat too. I wish I didn't have allergies. But definitely worth a try and glad I got to experience it at least for a bit 🙂

Review: The quality is excellent. I love the non-slip base on the back, and it’s so easy to fold and store in a closet. It’s also incredibly lightweight. The igusa (rush grass) smell is amazing. it reminds me of the house I grew up in back in Japan.

Title: Amazing Tatami Mat... However...
Review: This is the perfect tatami mat if you've owned an authentic one before. This has the smell and feel that reminds me of rural Japan. If you are buying one and have never owned one before beware of the smell. It smells like fresh cut grass and is nearly impossible to get out. Otherwise it is perfect.

Title: Perfect for queen size, low smell
Review: After searching for an affordable tatami mat and reading a lot of reviews about strong smells, I was worried this one would be like that, especially since it was one of the better priced ones. I am happy to report that the smell is mild- it is, after all, made of grass. But it is minimal, and a reminder of freshness and natural materials. Once I lay my shikibuton on top and have my sheets and blanket, there is no scent at all. This is coming from someone with a (too) sensitive sense of smell. In summary, this was very affordable, well made and low scent. Very happy!

Review: Nice product in theory but the reality is it arrived very damaged. There is poor quality stitching with a 6” slice where the stitches and grass fibers were cut clean through. Unless it's repaired, it’s in danger of ripping open further, and repair would be very difficult if not impossible. This was an international order and quite expensive. When I reported the issue, I was given an odd return label to a different address with no postage paid. Looks like a SCAM.

Review: Comfortable to sit or lay on its own. Even more with a futon mattress- then it makes for a great night’s sleep!Expect the scent of grass for the first few days, and this will naturally come back when in humid conditions. I don’t mind it. When it was intense for the first couple of days, I just aired it out and kept a fan running. No problem.
