From one of America's most beloved chefs and authors, a road trip into the heart of Italian American cooking today—from Chicago deep-dish pizza to the Bronx's eggplant parm—celebrating the communities that redefined what we know as Italian food.

As she explores this utterly delectable and distinctive cuisine, Lidia shows us that every kitchen is different, every Italian community distinct, and little clues are buried in each dish: the Sicilian-style semolina bread and briny olives in New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwiches, the Neapolitan crust of New York pizza, and mushrooms (abundant in the United States, but scarce in Italy) stuffed with breadcrumbs, just as peppers or tomatoes are. Lidia shows us how this cuisine is an original American creation and gives recognition where it is long overdue to the many industrious Italians across the country who have honored the traditions of their homeland in a delicious new style.

And of course, there are Lidia’s irresistible recipes, including
·        Baltimore Crab Cakes
·        Pittsburgh’s Primanti’s Sandwiches
·        Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza
·        Eggplant Parmigiana from the Bronx
·        Gloucester Baked Halibut
·        Chicken Trombino from Philadelphia
·        authentic Italian American Meatloaf, and Spaghetti and Meatballs
·        Prickly Pear Granita from California
·        and, of course, a handful of cheesecakes and cookies that you’d recognize in any classic Italian bakery

This is a loving exploration of a fascinating cuisine—as only Lidia could give us.

Title: Recipes to love and make again and again.
Review: We are fortunate to have eaten several times at one of Lidia's restaurants. Many of her dishes are favorites of our family and friends. I was originally given this book as a gift. I have now purchased several as gifts for friends. The Bolognese sauce tastes like what you get at her restaurant and is particularly fabulous made into her lasagna recipe. The meatballs are a great way to serve a crowd. For parties I make a triple batch the day before, heat them in the marinara sauce and serve them on slider buns with a slice of provolone. The book is beautifully crafted with great pictures not only of the food but of the people and places highlighted in the book. The recipes are very clear and easy to follow. One of the things I like best about Lidia's recipes is that they are unique and flavorful. If you want adventure, cook your way through this book. Your taste buds will love you for it. So will your family and friends.

Title: We love Lidia in Kansas City
Review: We love Lidia in Kansas City. We lucked out when she fell in love with us, too, and decided to put a restaurant in the old freight house near the rail yards of the Crossroads district. Apart from the world-class Italian food, which this cookbook can help you make if you're not here in KC, Lidia's has one of the most spectacular dining rooms I've ever seen, with a beautiful bar, soaring ceilings, fantastic Chihuli glass light fixtures, and a sunny patio for outdoor dining. When you're a mayor, you like to show off your city's best, and although there are a lot of great places to eat (we've made a few recent "best U.S. food cities" lists, with James Beard award-winning chefs and great ethnic neighborhoods), my best show-and-tells have been at Lidia's. The famed menu item is the pasta trio—endless amounts of three pastas, scooped right out onto your plate from hot saute pans. You'll find many similar dishes among these recipes. Everyone should own at least one cookbook by Lidia. This isn't the newest, but it's one of the best.

Title: It is worth having
Review: The book is a good companion to the TV series. While the recipes are easy to follow, they do come to life when you watch them being made during the TV program. Many of the recipes are standard fare, and possibly favorites when dining out. The commentary about the areas of the country that the recipes represent are interesting. While it is not the definitive Italian cookbook, it is a good addition to any cookbook library.

Title: Lidia's Italy in America Review
Review: I like to watch Lidia on our local PBS station. I personally liked the book. This book is a compilation of recipes from her 26 episodes on "Lidia's Italy in America". You can watch her make the same recipes on TV. It's nice to reference the book while watching an episode. Well done, Lidia! One PBS station wrote, "Join celebrity chef and restaurateur Lidia Bastianich as she embarks on another eye-opening culinary journey. LIDIA'S ITALY IN AMERICA explores the food, artisans and ingredients at the heart of Italian-American cooking. Over the course of 26-half hour episodes, Lidia traces the impact of Italian culture on American food, drink, art, music and fashion. She travels from the East Coast to the South to the Midwest to interview Italian-American families still making wine and vinegar in their garages or curing their own prosciutto, to visit the "Little Italys" keeping old-world traditions alive and to meet third- and fourth-generation Italians putting their twist on authentic recipes." That's it in a nutshell. Lidia also has a wonderful website. You should check it out. [...]

Title: Who doesn't love Lidia?
Review: This book, Lidia's Italy in America, like the seven previous books, is rich with delicious recipes that are truly easy to follow. I purchased this book for my husband for Christmas this year. It has become a tradition to get a 'Lidia cookbook' for him for the past several years, each time one becomes available. We enjoy watching Lidia's Italy on TV so much that we need to know how to prepare each recipe featured on the show. The television program and the cookbooks are so wonderful. Lidia gives us a history lesson as she takes us on tour throughout beautiful Italy. Now, with her newest book, we are on the ultimate food road trip here at home in the United States. And, as always, Lidia makes us feel like family every week, as she invites us into her own kitchen.

Title: Food & Family
Review: I loved all the stories of the cities that Lidia went to and visited the Italian areas. I visited some of them myself and it was fun to remember. Loved the food she talked about and it brought back memories of growing up with my Italian family. Joanne
