Got kugel? Got Kugel with Toffee Walnuts? Now you do. Here's the real homemade Gefilte Fish – and also Salmon en Papillote. Grandma Sera Fritkin’s Russian Brisket and Hazelnut-Crusted Rack of Lamb. Aunt Irene's traditional matzoh balls and Judy's contemporary version with shiitake mushrooms. Cooking Jewish gathers recipes from five generations of a food-obsessed family into a celebratory saga of cousins and kasha, Passover feasts – the holiday has its own chapter – and crossover dishes. And for all cooks who love to get together for coffee and a little something, dozens and dozens of desserts: pies, cakes, cookies, bars, and a multitude of cheesecakes; Rugelach and Hamantaschen, Mandelbrot and Sufganyot (Hanukkah jelly doughnuts). Not to mention Tanta Esther Gittel’s Husband’s Second Wife Lena’s Nut Cake.
Blending the recipes with over 160 stories from the Rabinowitz family—by the end of the book you'll have gotten to know the whole wacky clan—and illustrated throughout with more than 500 photographs reaching back to the 19th century, Cooking Jewish invites the reader not just into the kitchen, but into a vibrant world of family and friends. Written and recipe-tested by Judy Bart Kancigor, a food journalist with the Orange County Register, who self-published her first family cookbook as a gift and then went on to sell 11,000 copies, here are 532 recipes from her extended family of outstanding cooks, including the best chicken soup ever – really! – from her mother, Lillian. (Or as the author says, "When you write your cookbook, you can say your mother's is the best.")
Every recipe, a joy in the belly.

Both proudly traditional and blazingly modern, it is a perfect blueprint for remembering the past, living in our present, and imagining the future. Tablet’s list of the 100 most Jewish foods is not about the most popular Jewish foods, or the tastiest, or even the most enduring. It’s a list of the most significant foods culturally and historically to the Jewish people. With Shuk, home cooks everywhere can now inhale the fragrances and taste the flavors of the vivacious culinary mash-up that is today’s Israel. Israeli baking encompasses the influences of so many regions—Morocco, Yemen, Germany, and Georgia, to name a few—and master baker Uri Scheft seamlessly marries all of these in his incredible baked goods. Einat Admony is a 21st-century balaboosta (Yiddish for “perfect housewife”). Her debut cookbook features 140 of the recipes she cooks for the people she loves ―her children, her husband, and the many friends she regularly entertains. In The Jewish Foods Memory Game, players will match bagel to bagel and lox to lox, learning the Hebrew words of the foods as they go.

Blending the recipes with over 160 stories from the Rabinowitz family and illustrated throughout with more than 500 photographs, Cooking Jewish invites the reader not just into the kitchen, but into a vibrant world of family and friends. For many Jews, the meal is the holiday. Reflecting three thousand years of love and loss, culture and change, each dish captures the soul of what’s served in a Jewish home on a Jewish holiday. Ring in the holiday with eighteen writers who extol, excoriate, and expand our understanding of this most merry of Jewish festivals. Cooking alla Giudia is the ultimate tribute to the wonderfully rich, yet still largely unknown, culinary heritage of the Jews of Italy.

Title: The biggest hit were the cookies from this book!
Review: There were two recipes from this cookbook in a newspaper, and I made them for dessert for Pesach, What feedback I got -- the best desserts ever to grace the table! I was thrilled and bought the cookbook. This cookbook is such a treasure, not just for the recipes but also for the family stories of their immigration from Slonim and their early lives in Brooklyn. My eyes filled with tears as I thought of the love that their grandparents gave the family, read the letter from WWII from one of the sons to his parents, and then thought of my own dear grandparents and parents and days gone by. Food for Jews is not just food-- it is cherished memories of holidays and family togetherness, of singing and dancing, of a history now gone. The added bonus of this cookbook is that the recipes are wonderful! Thank you for undertaking this task!

Title: Amazing Family Cookbook
Review: I am a cookbook collector with hundreds of cookbooks I read as others read fiction. But this cookbook is amazing and an essential reference for all of those who love Jewish cooking.I cooked a beautiful Seder last week at my Temple for over 130 people and this was the cookbook I referred to throughout the cooking process. I am a big fan of classic Jewish cooking likemy Mother and Bubbe made and this cookbook fits the bill. Judy Bart Kancigor is an amazing cook herself and this compliation is a must have. I promise this book will help novice cooks andcontinues for those of us who believe cooking is life. I highly recommend this book and it will soon become one of your favorites as well.

Title: great cookbook
Review: This is a great cookbook and more-the universal story of many families who came to the United States for a better life than Europe offered. Though not the same circumstances, I definitely relived stories of my parents while reading through the book. I'm excited to try some of the recipes.

Review: I truly enjoyed the narrative but was somewhat disappointed in many of the recipes as I'm sure others would be in most of my family recipes. The love and closeness of the family shone through.

Title: Go-to-Jewish cookbook
Review: This is definitely the "go-to-Jewish Cookbook for traditional favorites. But it's uniquely more: it's photos and interesting background information on so many of those traditional recipes make it an interesting 'read' as well. It's rare to find a cookbook that informs and provides excellent recipes for Jewish favorites.Family photos in this treasury help us all (any family) recall our own family and life experiences -- especially the wonderful foods for Jewish holidays, celebrations and family meals. 'Cooking Jewish' preserves that treasury of special foods so we can easily prepare them for our own family gatherings.

Title: I never thought a cookbook could be this fun!
Review: Cooking Jewish is an amazing book. It's a gift straight from the author's heart that is full of history, comedy, family, fun and inspiration IN ADDITION more than five hundred of her favorite recipes. I've been reading through it with great pleasure for two days, and have dozens of recipes marked, but I have finally decided to start with her Oat Pancakes for a quick, easy and healthy breakfast, and to challenge myself this weekend with her Apple Blintzes (they make my mouth water and spark many memories). Thank you for this treasure Judy. I love it!

Title: Awesome!
Review: Very impressive cookbook. The recipes are varied and wonderful. Even better are all the andedotes in the book. Its like reading a cookbook and a family history all at the same time. Everyone in the family kept picking up the book and coming up with something they wanted to try. Brought back wonderful memories of my mom and dads European backgrounds. I am getting a second copy to give as a gift. You won't be sorry with this book.
