Title: Evolution of the 1973 Joker album
Review: Exactly as advertised. Early working and live versions of the 9 songs on The Joker spread over 2 cds. Includes the studio versions as well.

Title: Remastered Tracks shine / Rest is Documentary with Raw Material
Review: Six enjoyable commentary briefs are included by Steve which stitch together the entire release. While the tracks are nicely arranged in chronological order, the first CD which contains live tracks 2-7 has an overpowering audience in the mix. I suspect these are from two track masters and the audience is embedded high in the mix. Somewhat distracting though a good performance by Steve especially on "Nothing Lasts". The Sugar Babe and Mary Lou outtakes are fine for an initial listen but the remasters of the these 2 originals will likely be the main preference. The track Hat is a rather fast uptempo live jam, it's so fast the drummer makes apparent errors trying to keep up. White Elephant is a spacey-heady number with a loose jam edge.Commentary #4 is worthy..Steve was resting on the hood of his GTO when he finished the Joker lyrics. The early version of Trash exudes this period of Steve Miller and is more enjoyable than the final mix. The tracks leading up to the Joker are good for an initial listen conversely the folk version of Travelin' (aka Joker) is worthy of a revisit. From Commentary #5 forward to Commentary #6, Steve describes his devout interest in the blues and those who influenced his background. The live version of Come On In My Kitchen from Philly is a spectacular performance. It's stark, bright and candid. The Studio version of Evil delivers a low down and dirty feel. Along the lines of the very first BS&T LP.From Commentary 6 onward, Steve illustrates the country/folk flavor however 2 tracks: Coupe De Ville and also Mama are pure A Cappella (vocal harmonies only). The early version of Something To Believe is a neat folk track with harmonies and similar to that Simon and Garfunkel. The live version is equally as compelling.

Review: Steve Miller has been one of my guilty pleasures for 50 years. This album celebrates that 50 year love affair by showing the growth of the studio cuts on the album via demos and live versions many of which are from Steve's own vaults and are previously unreleased. Rather than just a remastered album with some extra tracks, I think this is a clever and novel way of showing how a writer and player hones his work into an album of great songs. Some may not like this approach and complain that it breaks the flow of the tunes and the sequencing of the original album. This way you have to skip through the non album cuts, or listen and enjoy how these tunes are moulded and shaped from rough acoustic demo's into full band compositions. I chose to listen in full and am pleased that I did.

Review: Sounds GREAT on vinyl and you get some cool extras in this box to peruse as you listen. My only quibble would be that it would have been nice to have a copy of the album proper included just to hear the finished work in its properly sequenced running order. Yes, the original finished studio tracks are here but scattered over 3 LPs and interrupted by "working" and/or live versions. Beautifully presented with a lenticular shot of the front cover on the face of the box as well as spot gloss on the lettering. Classy package indeed and a work of art both sonically and aesthetically. If you are a Steve Miller fan, then the purchase of this box set is a no-brainer especially at the current Amazon price because out in the wild it's getting really expensive.
