Title: Top quality product that works exactly as designed, and a great price!
Review: This is my very first "sharpening system" that I have purchased primarily for sharpening my woodworking tools. I always wanted to go straight to diamond whetstones due to their low maintenance and longevity compared to traditional oil or water stones, but I couldn't bring myself to pay that initial expense. Then comes along this Sharpal system (I bought the 3"x8" variety). The price was so good, I was a bit leary about the quality or whether or not it would last. Not having much experience sharpening hand woodworking tools, I wasn't even sure if the basic two-grit system (325 and 1200 for this set) would work (including a leather strop, which I purchased separately).Sharpal's description of their product checked all the right boxes: monocrystaline diamonds, electroplated bonding, super flat plate, storage and holding case. With the 3 year warranty and the great price, I decided I had nothing to lose, so I took the plunge.I used it for the first time yesterday (along with an off-brand "Eclipse" style honing guide that I also recently purchased). I had a #4 plane iron and a set of 4 chisels that needed sharpening. The iron is used (~100 years old) and just needed a basic touch-up, but the chisels were brand new and had never been set up or sharpened (except by the factory). In all cases, the Sharpal system performed fantastically well. All of my worries about only having a coarse and extra fine grit (and stroping) step in my sharpening process were laid to rest. These two grits along with the strop were all I needed to get hair-shaving-, magazine-paper-slicing-sharp edges on my tools.Sharpal says to sharpen dry, but I decided to use some Windex for this first go-around (based on what I've learned from the web). It worked just fine. I will likely try to sharpen dry, like Sharpal recommends, next time around. One thing I noticed is that, when I was all done, it took a bit of effort to clear out all of the metal dust, even though I was using the Windex to keep metal from building up. I have to wonder, then, if the Windex made much difference. In any case, when I was finished, I rinsed the plate under the sink and scrubbed it with my fingers (I didn't have a nylon brush handy). It came clean at the expense of my finger prints. :)The base/case works very well. It protects the plate while stored, has a handy cutout to hold the "angle finder" pyramid and holds the plate perfectly still while sharpening due to its foam rubber bottom.Back to that angle finder pyramid. This was a pleasant little bonus. I have a few high end Japanese kitchen knives that I have traditionally sharpened with a Lansky sharpening system (the one with the the blade clamp and the skinny whetstones that go on the end of a metal rod). I decided to try sharpening my chef's knife with the Sharpal whetstone. This particular knife has a 20° angle, so that's the side I used on the pyramid. It was surprisingly easy to do this. I think I only made 10 passes on each side of the blade with the coarse grit, then the fine, then my stropping leather. That blade was easily the sharpest it has ever been. So, as a bonus, I now have a better, simpler way to sharpen my knives!I can't really comment on longevity yet since I've only had it for a few days, but so far, it looks like something that will last WAY beyond its 3 year warranty. If you're like me and you've been waiting on the fence to make the investment into diamond whetstones, no need to wait any longer. This is the set you want.

Title: A Steel-Eating Beast!
Review: I got the 8x3 model. First of all, very satisfying heft. When you pick this thing up you just KNOW it means business. I like the case/holder, too. I hone in hand only, never on a bench, so I really need as much thickness as possible to keep my fingertips out of the blade path. This holder does it, and I like that it doubles as a case to keep lint and hair and stuff off of it. The hinge is an actual hinge, with a pin, and not just thin bendy plastic that will eventually wear out and break.Like most diamond plates, this one comes new with a lot of proud diamonds that need to be knocked off before the "true" surface is accessible. Honing a couple of junky old stainless kitchen knives usually does the trick. Once the flyers are knocked off, the surface is about as expected. And like all diamond plates, this one cuts fast. Even the hardest steel has to submit to this hoss of a sharpener.Nice and flat. Flatness is very important with razors, as well as knives and particularly straight edged knives. Since you can't lap a diamond coated plate, it really needs to come flat. My straightedge held against the surface lets zero daylight underneath, corner to corner, both diagonals, and longways near the edges. If you hone a lot, diamond plates do NOT last. None of them. If you hone a thousand edges on it, it will be worn out. If you hone 20 edges on it, then it shouldn't be. So NO diamond plate actually deserves better than two stars for durability. Since I just got this, the benefit of the doubt would lead me to put three stars. Diamond hones DO NOT hold up well to high volume use. For high volume use you want a good flat lapping plate and wet/dry sandpaper which can be replaced and leave the plate flat flat flat. Or lapping film, or a synthetic stone, which can be lapped as needed and gives you a lot of abrasive to use up. So I should give it three stars out of charity for a product I have not yet had time to wear out. Nevertheless because of the size and heft and overall quality and attention to detail, I am throwing 4 stars for durability. Maybe this one won't prove me wrong, but I have worn out over a dozen DMT plates and lots of budget ones so we will see. Ease of use and value I gave 5 stars. The size is nice. DMT is way too small for me. I usually use an 11" long piece of sandpaper or lapping film on 1" thick or 3/4" thick acrylic, or a 12" long pasted balsa. I hate short stroking on an itty bitty stone. This plate is nice and wide, and nearly long enough to satisfy me. No corners have been cut. Fit and finish are above reproach. So in spite of the short expected lifespan I anticipate, I gave it the full 5 stars overall. It is just a really good product and I am quite pleased to have it.What I would like to see is diamond actually mixed into a bronze or aluminum or copper matrix, so that it has room for wear, applied maybe 1/8" thick on a steel or nickel substrate. When the diamonds are gone, they are gone. You can't bring them back. But if the diamonds are mixed into a thick layer of a matrix, you can get a lot more wear out of it. A thicker layer would not work. By the time it is wearing down to nothing, the surface is out of flat anyway, and you would never be able to lap it flat. In fact maybe 1/16" thick diamond matrix would be better. When repairing or first establishing the bevel on a razor, I don't mess around. I use fast cutting coarse media to do the heavy lifting. And so I am going to enjoy using the 325 grit side of this plate, and yeah a couple dozen laps on the 1200 side before I hit the Naniwa or Kuromoku or the 9u lapping film to bring the bevel home and set it up for the progression. The burning question is HOW LONG will I enjoy it? Time will tell. Meanwhile this is in my view a great product and PERFECT for the casual home knife sharpener guy. That dull $12 SS chef knife doesn't stand a chance against a couple dozen laps on each side of this brute. It will soon be slicing like a power saw. Same for pocketknives. Really... who wants to spend an hour touching up a pocket carried Buck folder on an Arkie when you are just gonna bitch up the edge the first time you flip it open and use it, or spend all that time sharpening it and be reluctant to use it out of respect for the fine edge? Hit this thing with your work knives and in under a minute you are done.

Title: Good diamond stone
Review: I waited to write this review until I had a chance to sharpen up a few knives with this stone. After sharpening several knives, I'm happy to report the sharpener works well and is holding up just fine. The grits are great for putting on a new edge and getting your blade ready for the strop. It's a great size for all my knives and carving axes. The case is a bonus and makes the entire package a great value. I know some have said the diamonds don't bite or get worn off after several sharpening, but that's not my experience at all. I was able to bring up a nice burr fairly quickly, refine the edge and get it ready for stropping. After a quick strop, every knife and carving axe I've sharpened with this stone was able to shave hair off my arm. Would I buy it again? Yep, in a heartbeat.

Review: I’m pretty new at sharpening knives by hand. The little orange pyramid it comes with was really handy - I always reset to the correct angle each stroke. I was able to get a couple of kitchen knives pretty damn sharp using the two grits and a strop of leather. The case it comes in is really sturdy and the rubber on the bottom really grips the table. Not like one or two little feet - the whole bottom is rubber. Felt solid as a rock. And the way the case doubles as a holder is really nice, space efficient. This is the first diamond stone I’ve touched, so I don’t know what they should feel like, but this felt super heavy and really solid. I definitely recommend this over some cheap stones I tried previously! They were messy and I wasn’t able to keep a consistent angle (skill issue).
