"The Four Winds seems eerily prescient in 2021 . . . Its message is galvanizing and hopeful: We are a nation of scrappy survivors. We’ve been in dire straits before; we will be again. Hold your people close.”—The New York Times
"A spectacular tour de force that shines a spotlight on the indispensable but often overlooked role of Greatest Generation women."—People
"Through one woman’s survival during the harsh and haunting Dust Bowl, master storyteller, Kristin Hannah, reminds us that the human heart and our Earth are as tough, yet as fragile, as a change in the wind." —Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing
From the number-one bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes a powerful American epic about love and heroism and hope, set during the Great Depression, a time when the country was in crisis and at war with itself, when millions were out of work and even the land seemed to have turned against them.
“My land tells its story if you listen. The story of our family.”
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life. With her reputation in ruin, there is only one respectable choice: marriage to a man she barely knows.
By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as crops fail and water dries up and the earth cracks open. Dust storms roll relentlessly across the plains. Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa’s tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive.
In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.
The Four Winds is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it—the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. A testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

Title: âBe Braveâ¦.. Or Pretend To Be. Itâs All The Sameâ
Review: I write this review with the same heavy heart that I wrote for âThe Nightingale.â Ms. Hannah has a gift that, in my opinion, VERY FEW authors possess; storytelling with off- the- chart passion, vision and heart. As with my last read I am compelled to state that readers will be transported into the story and literally become one with the environment, the people, and the adverse conditions they experience. The stellar writing makes it virtually impossible to distance oneself from the story at hand. The drought, the deprivation, the betrayal, tests the human spirit beyond comprehension. Elsa and her children, Loreda and âAntâ must make a difficult decision. I donât want to offer any spoilers because I believe readers need to allow the story to unfold for themselves naturally as they read. I will say, however, this story epitomizes the bond between mother/child that is cemented at birth and is life long. It is also a true self discovery novel for the main character, Elsa. Her mother in law, Rose, is an amazing woman and so insightful. One of my favorite passages is this one shared at the birth of Loredaâ¦. âBelieve me Elsa, this girl will love you as no one ever has⦠and make you crazy and try your soul, often all at the same time.â Elsa and Loredaâs relationship is similar to many mother/daughter relationships in life. But⦠LOVE endures despite the volatility. THAT is the definition of motherhood. ââ Elsa: âYou taught me love. You, first in the whole world, and my love for you will outlive me.âI STRONGLY recommend this book. Iâm convinced it will enlighten you as it has me about a time and place in our countryâs history known as the Dust Bowl in the central plains, the severe drought and The Great Depression. It helped me understand the plight of proud, hardworking families forced to migrate to the West for a perceived better life and the fight for a fair wage and living conditions. You go, Jack Valen! It is not a light read for the purpose of entertaining only. This story will touch you, soul deep. As with The Nightingale, I will never forget the story and its relevance in modern times too. ðððððâ¦..â¾ï¸!The Audible narration is superb! ðð»ðð»

Title: Superb book, hard to put down
Review: This book really opens your eyes and helps you understand what the people of our country went through during the Dust Bowl years. It was hard to read how incredibly difficult it was to live & survive those times, all they endured. I love stories where you actually learn from history, and this book was certainly that. The author's writing was exceptional. However, I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5, just because of the utter hopelessness of Elsa's life-- it was so overwhelming, and never ending. I know life is not a fairy tale, but I was disappointed with the ending. I so wanted a happy-ever-after ending for Elsa after a lifetime of hard work and heartache. But overall, an unforgettable read.

Title: An unforgettable historical novel of epic proportions!
Review: The Four Winds is an epic historical novel that takes the reader back to The Great Depression and a family who suffered through it all. This involves the greatest generation of all, for they were the strongest, most resilient and determined to make a life for themselves despite the dire circumstances of nature, other events, and heartache. This was a tough book to read because it involved so much heartbreak as the author takes us through the daily life of this family and all their struggles. The main protagonist Elsa is a woman who has been unloved by her family, mistreated by her husband and not accepted by her daughter. All Elsa wants is to love and be loved, something that she has desperately needed all her life. She struggles to be a good wife, mother, and eventual daughter-in-law when she moves in with her in-laws after being ostracized by her parents when she realizes she is pregnant.Elsa discovers that she is loved and needed by her mother- and father-in-law but not appreciated by her husband for what she is, a hard worker who is determined to make a good life for herself and her family. It was difficult to watch Elsa with her struggles and how she never gave up even after her husband abandoned her and their two children. There is mention of how the immigrants from one state to another were mistreated and shunned by others, exploited by the cotton and fruit plantations, and forced to grovel and somehow survive reminiscent of some of the problems in our society today. An unforgettable and epic read that I highly recommend. Be prepared to feel the heart wrenching despair of the characters told expertly through this amazing author's prose.

Title: American Warrior
Review: This story was so powerful, so rich. I love historical fiction and this book didnât disappoint. A family rich in love that held together during the most difficult of times. A story of strength and perseverance during the Great Depression where a young mother drove her two children from the Great Plains out West to California hoping for a better life but only to be treated like vagrants by their fellow Americans. I couldnât put this book down. I will remember the strength of these characters for some time to come. Kristin Hannah is such an amazing author! Highly recommended!!

Review: A tough , harsh and real look back at a time in the USA that we seem to have swept under the carpet. It is a strong, hard story that is very well put together by Kristin. I personally prefer some of her other books more.

Review: An unforgettable and deeply moving novel that captures the resilience of the human spirit. Set during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, the story follows Elsa Martinelli, a woman who finds her inner strength amid unimaginable hardships. Hannah's writing beautifully portrays the harsh realities of that era, painting vivid scenes of dust storms, poverty, and the struggle for survival, while also highlighting themes of love, family, and hope.Elsa is an incredibly relatable and inspiring character, and her growth throughout the novel is one of the book's greatest strengths. The emotional depth of the story is gripping from start to finish. You truly feel the weight of each decision she makes and the sacrifices that come with them. I couldnât put it down and was deeply moved by the end.The Four Winds is not just a historical novel, but a testament to human perseverance in the face of adversity. Kristin Hannah has, once again, crafted a masterpiece that will stay with readers long after the final page. Highly recommend!
