“A pasta lover’s delight and a culinary treasure that can provide the basis and foundation for memorable gatherings of family and friends.” —The Midwest Book Review

Pasta Friday is a weekly pasta tradition that turns neighbors into friends, and friends into family. Restaurateur and food writer Allison Arevalo shows you how to start your own tradition by cooking comforting, delicious pasta dishes to feed your family on a busy weeknight, or for a crowd on the weekend.

It’s not about entertaining, but sitting down with family and friends to eat together, and connect over big bowls of cannolicchi with red pepper sauce, pappardelle with slow-cooked pork ragu, trofie with pesto, and more.

Find the right dish for any week of the year from the 52 comforting pasta dishes and 16 creative salads, organized by season. And, be sure to sprinkle in some extras like crispy, spicy prosciutto, lemon breadcrumbs. Each recipe uses a different pasta shape, so you can have fun experimenting with calamarata, gnocchetti, paccheri, and mafalda, or simply using traditional spaghetti. There are plenty of tips for scaling the recipes up for a crowd, shopping on a budget, and finding time to cook, along with wine pairings, and gorgeous photography. You’ll fall in love with the Pasta Friday tradition, and start hosting your own before you know it.

“A true testament that grace, kindness, and generosity can help build community and spread love for good food while nurturing a peaceful and joyful world, especially for our children.” —Rolando Beramendi, author of Autentico: Cooking Italian, the Authentic Way

Title: pasta party
Review: Allison Arevalo has created a community filled with friends and family, with neighbors and school mates, and with pasta lovers of all ages. She and her family host a weekly pasta dinner, and she wants you to do it too. In her new cookbook, The Pasta Friday Cookbook, she walks about how she is able to pull off a weekly gathering of friends and family and then shares 52 different pasta recipes that you can use to start your own Pasta Fridays.First of all, Arevalo sets rules. She makes a pasta dish and a salad, and that’s it. No appetizers, no desserts (although she does get popsicles for the kids). She doesn’t cater to special diets—anyone who wants to eat gluten-free or vegetarian/vegan can bring their own meals. She does make a big pot of pasta with butter for the kids, but she also encourages them to try the “adult” pasta as well. The clean up all gets done Friday night, so Saturday isn’t spent cleaning up the kitchen. And all the adults bring 2 bottles of wine, and everyone eats and talks and laughs and drinks together. The Pasta Friday Cookbook is packed with 52 pasta ideas, divided by season. Each week features a different shape of pasta, so with the help of a good local Italian market or the internet, you could cook a different style of noodle every week for a year. She also includes a wide variety of sauces to serve with the pasta, with seasonal vegetables, quality cheeses, a wide assortment of meats and seafood, and a really good olive oil.It sounds like a lot of work to create a different pasta every week for a group of people, but Arevalo’s recipes tend toward the simple and rustic. She chooses quality ingredients that will be packed with flavor, cooks them simply, and lets the dishes speak for themselves. And she also includes four salad recipes for each season as well as a host of recipe for extras that can be set out to accompany the pasta, like Homemade Breadcrumbs, Fried Capers, Salsa Verde, and Basic Pesto. She starts with summer (but you can start at any time of the year, of course), with recipes like Bucatini with Summer Corn and Pancetta and Pam’s Pasta with Sausage, Tomatoes, and Peaches. Fall brings heartier dishes like Broken-Up Chicken Parm with Cestini or Duck Lasagne with Roasteed Carrots. Winter offers the filling comfort of Linguine with Dungeness Crab, Scallops, and Clams and Veal Marsala with Escarole and Stringozzi. Spring’s bounty includes Big Fusilli with a Quick Lamb Ragu and Gnocchi with Peas and Prosciutto. But here’s the thing about the Pasta Friday idea: it’s not about the food. It’s about the fellowship. It’s a chance to build a community, to come together in good times and bad, to support each other and grow in friendship. The Pasta Friday Cookbook isn’t just about creating a great dinner. It’s about making a fuller life for you and your family.Personally, I’m not sure a weekly pasta night is right for us. But maybe monthly. I do like the idea of getting together on a regular basis with friends and enjoying a big pot of pasta and companionship. At the very least, this has given me a lot to think about. I highly recommend The Pasta Friday Cookbook, both as a collection of crazy and delicious recipes and as a guideline for building a stronger community.Galleys for The Pasta Friday Cookbook were provided by Andrews McMeel Publishing through NetGalley, with many thanks.

Title: Such a great concept
Review: I rarely write reviews on anything, but this book inspired me to form a pasta club of my own. Much smaller scale of course (I live in an apartment) but the same concept--serving a relatively easy, large batch meal in order to encourage getting together more often. The book has great ideas for making this as easy and as fun as possible, as well as great recipes. This isn't a fancy schmancy book that will suggest making your own fresh pasta for 30 people -- very practical and fun (e.g., use dried pasta, paper plates, etc.). My only (very very minor) tweak would be that I wish there was a picture of each recipe on each recipe page. I recommend this book to everyone I know, as I think the concept is fantastic.

Title: Perfect for pasta lovers and entertainers - 4 stars out of 5!
Review: Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this book in exchange for an honest review.Allison Arevalo’s The Pasta Friday Cookbook is a delicious book filled with easy-to-follow recipes, bright pictures, and great tips for creating a new and fun tradition.I love eating pasta so this cookbook is right up my alley! I had no idea that pasta could be so exciting! Did you know that there are pastas made with strawberries? And that there are balsamic pearls for your salad? I didn’t!This original cookbook is more than just a great collection of pasta and salad recipes. Arevalo includes helpful tips on creating fuss-free Pasta Friday dinners which combines food, friends, and family into a wonderful tradition. I appreciate her tips on scaling up the recipes as well as her suggestions on pasta essentials like cheese and tomatoes. I love the inclusion of wine pairings as well as options to change the pasta. Most of the recipes begin with great and succinct anecdotes. Arevalo’s writing style is simple and approachable. The recipes are clear and easy-to-follow. They range from simple fare to complicated dishes featuring numerous specialty ingredients. However, Arevalo offers many substitutes for hard to find items to help make your pasta adventures as uncomplicated as possible. I haven’t made anything yet but I can’t wait to hover over the pot devouring Bavette with Fiery Shrimp or try to impress my friends with Stefania’s Paccheri Fragola with Mozzarella and Crispy Basil.Sara Remington’s lovely pictures nicely fit the book. I like that there are both food pictures and pictures of happy guests at Arevalo’s dinners. However, I wish the pictures were more interesting. Pictures of the more unusual pastas like strozzapreti and casarecce would nicely enhance this book. I also wish that the page design was livelier and warmer considering the book’s focus on family, friendship, and togetherness. The Pasta Friday Cookbook is perfect for those who love eating and entertaining and anyone who’s looking to start a new tradition.

Title: More than a cookbook! This book is a must have for your kitchen!
Review: This book is more than recipes on paper, it is more of a story and way of life where you can relate to the author. Allison writes of her own memories and traditions as well as sharing her expertise with each delicious recipe. She reminds us of our own family traditions and encourages us to create and continue traditions with our family and friends. I can’t wait to make these dishes and connect with my circle and beyond. There is no shortage of recipes as there is a pasta recipe for every week of the year with salads and wine pairings for each season. And the visuals on the pages are gorgeous, everything looks so delicious. My youngest teenage daughter was flipping through the pages and commented how good everything looked. Highly recommend for pasta, salad and wine lovers!!!
