Title: Forty-eight hours and not that long but could be a lifetime or more????
Review: The Man of Legends by Kenneth Johnson Review 7/3/17New York City, New Year’s weekend, 2001. Jillian Guthrie, a troubled young journalist, stumbles onto a tantalizing mystery: the same man, unaged, stands alongside Ulysses S. Wow, this was riveting!!!! The first few pages I was in doubt but don’t give up, this is a spectacular book. I was very interested in the whole storyline and what if it was really true. It raises lots of questions that I think everyone needs to give some thought to. I know that I have and in questioning I have received a varying amount of answers some I am not so sure about. But at the end you must wonder if something like this could possibly happen or has it already happened????What will you like? Besides the questions? A Fascinating storyline that will raise questions in your mind, but besides the questions it is intriguing, with details from the past and present that are exhilarating. The writing style is captivating and pulls in the reader to the story with all the tantalizing descriptions. Besides Will the lead character, my favorite is Hanna. Her part in Wills past is very exciting and she is such a provocative character, strong and yet with a sense of humor that is so European. Next would be Jilly she has the tenacious mindset that won’t let things get in her way of getting what she wants. When she finds a goal, she sets out to complete her mission, watching the change in her is poignant. A truly great read that will leave you wondering?????

Title: A Legendary Journey
Review: The Man of Legends, the latest novel from multiple-media talent, author Kenneth C. Johnson, evokes a sense of the legendary in many respects.Part historical fiction, part supernatural thriller, full of a range of voices and human perspectives, this story seems unable to sit with one particular characterization for too long. At 430 pages, it can seem a little daunting at first, but its legendary stature lends itself to the overall theme. It’s clear from the start that this is not your typical chronological story arc, as we are soon zipping backward and forward through time and space. Rather than unfolding through a single point of view, the narrative is arranged as an interwoven series of first person, eyewitness accounts of the days leading up to some cataclysmic event that took place shortly after the turn of the new millennium. The story begins with a personal note from one of the major characters, Jillian Guthrie, the reporter-cum-author who witnessed and recorded the event. She introduces this “comprehensive and definitive new edition” of her original retelling from sixteen years ago, which now includes the pièce de résistance, the first person account of “the remarkable man who was the principal player in all that occurred.”That remarkable man, our protagonist, has many names, but is chiefly known as Will. Through his own words, and those of the few people close to him, we discover his curious immortality, and the amazing journey he’s made through the past two millennia. Among his friends is the indomitable octogenarian Hanna Claire, a Bostonian transplant to NYC, who wishes ardently to be reunited with him after decades of separation.A fanatical and fervently ambitious priest, Father Paul St. Jacques, the latest in a long line of pursuers sent by the Vatican to capture this theological curiosity, serves as Will’s major adversary. But there also appears a shadowy figure, at first referred to only as a “sleek young man,” who lingers on the fringes of Will’s narrative passages, but seems to portend some more nefarious opposition. One of my favorite things about the book is the way in which Will interacts with figures from history. Does it stretch credulity that he happens to be in the exact right place and time to influence some of the greatest minds and characters of the past? Perhaps. But, for me, the simple retellings of the modest moments that Will shares in their lives lends these people a fragile humanity that rarely makes it into the history books. These tender historical portraits, coupled with Will’s contemporary relationships, however fleeting, are a refreshing reminder of the inherent goodness to be found in our everyday lives. The novel’s formidable length does give the reader a sense of Will’s experience of passing time, although maybe not in the best way. And sometimes I struggled with the varying voices of the many minor characters that people the story’s universe. Dialects are tricky in written form, and while Johnson captures some of them perfectly, others continuously tripped me up. Most frustrating, however, was Johnson’s lack of subtlety in foreshadowing. More than once, I got the sense of being baited, and I had to wait longer than I would’ve preferred to be rewarded for my patience. But rewarded, I was, and overall, I quite liked the book. Its themes were mythic, but also humanitarian. The action drew me in immediately, and I became invested in the characters and their fates. I found the historical tidbits interesting and engaging, and the ultimate conclusion thought-provoking. If you are a fan of history and religious intrigue, enjoy suspense and supernatural thrillers, then a legendary journey awaits you, too, between the pages of The Man of Legends.

Review: Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Clever and thought provoking in a subtle, not 'in your face' way.I liked the regular change in perspective as the author flicks from character to character without losing pace or relevance to the overall story line direction.Similar to a couple of other reviewers, I found that the 'hero' regularly bumping into historical greats and as a result often triggering their greatness - did become a tad predictable and therefore a potential distraction. Although, it could easily be argued that the 'bumping into' was by design as opposed to accidental and therefore integral to the plot. Just not sure it needed to be as frequent or linked to so many of the obvious history greats across the centuries.Overall a superb read which kept me interested from start to end. I found it more quirky and unique than most novels I've read recently.
