Title: Southern Man
Review: I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book. It thoroughly depicts how evil, depraved, and cruel people can be. Hopefully, it will help me be more understanding of the people around me and sensitive to their feelings. At times, it is depressing but also enlightening. It is worth your time to read.

Title: WOW!
Review: This is undoubtedly the best book I've read in a long time. The plots, yes there are many, are chilling. The horrifying reality is they are so close to actuality that I feel dumbfounded, confused, and scared all at once. I'm determined to do whatever I can to keep civility and democracy alive. To this end a lot of prayer is also needed.I'm also recommending this book to friends and relatives alike.

Title: Very good, very long
Review: At 900+ pages this book takes a long time to reach its climax. I found the trip frustrating at times, exhausting at others. The finale was worth the wait.This is a dark tale of people leveraging their desire for money and power by manipulating others through racial prejudice in modern day Mississippi. Penn Cage, former mayor and legal council for the small town of Bienville, is the central character around whom the story revolves. The town is rife with oppressive wealthy white people who control the Black majority. Robert E. Lee White, who grew up in Bienville and is a charismatic Middle East war hero, wants to run as a third party candidate for president. He is obsessed with his quest for power. He formulates a plan to create a large scale racial confrontation in the town with the idea he can become a national hero by killing the person who is allegedly responsible for causing the problem during a nationally televised confrontation between the Black citizens and the local police. As a result of collateral damage several others he needs to eliminate will be killed in the chaos.This is a wild and complicated scheme, with lots of sub-plots, which brings in lots of other characters, many of whom have their own agendas, mostly evil in nature. Penn is frantically trying to find out the source of the trouble and defuse it. He has known most of the characters, good and bad, all his life. He finds out many things about them he never knew or even imagined.My only problem with this book, as mentioned above, is the length. It's a complex story with many characters, both good and evil. They deserve to be heard and examined. However, I feel sure the book could have been substantially shorter. Warning, Greg Iles is very much an anti-Trumper which comes through clearly as there is much discussion of current politics. I'm sure this would put off many readers who don't agree with his politics. Four stars because of the book's length and political overtones. Otherwise another great read from the author.

Title: Lot's to love/hate
Review: Nobody weaves a story like Greg Iles. I've been a faithful reader through the years and I was excited for this book to release. And this is a rich, complex, engaging book.That said, I have some issues:A) The length. Insanely long and strangely paced. It's like Isles tried to make up the 15-year gap in the storyline with excessive words, strange plot details and unneeded characters, like Martine.B) Inconsistency. Details that others have mentioned, like Annie's hair color being described as auburn, then blonde, then auburn again.C) The editors of this book should be fired. Numerous errors. Wrong words. (I got the Kindle book, maybe the print version is better?)D) And this is my biggest beef: I've really come to dislike the way Isles writes his female characters - the main ones. They are always one dimensional, as in they are "perfect" in every way. Strikingly beautiful, whip smart, perfect body, ambitious, successful etc. Even the older Sophie Dufort, who Isles decribes as '140 lbs but thanks to swimming it's all in the right places'. Seriously? C'mon Greg. Challenge yourself for once to write a realistic female main/central character instead of always writing your school boy fantasy. Enough.

Review: I enjoyed it. It is a great study of racial and queer hatred that is being used by politicians to divert us from issue politics in this country. It is a long book and drags at times, but a good, topical read.

Review: The book is brilliantly and methodically researched and written. There is a rich history of the South and slavery and treatment of the Blacks before and after the Civil War. I am not American, so I found this fascinating. The characters are very well defined as you would expect from Greg, you feel a part of the story. The plots are intricately connected and builds and builds and you are so involved you don't want to stop reading.The book is long and involved so be prepared, but you won't be sorry.

Review: So after 6 weeks of a wonderful binge read, I’ve finally finished the Penn Cage series culminating with Southern Man book 7 in the series and Greg Iles's latest novel. I have been a fan of Greg since I stumbled on his books in a library years ago, I read all the books and adore his writing style. So I wanted to reread the Penn Cage series again before I read Southern Man, and I am so so glad I did! This is a wonderfully deep series about family, history, politics, and racism and is so topical today. Set in Natchez Mississippi, Gregs home town. He has managed to research and uncover lots of valuable history surrounding the civil rights events and he has incorporated them fictionally into the whole series of books. But in Southern Man, we see that history can very easily repeat itself and the plotline of this 900-plus page thriller is absolutely gripping. Greg’s talent at writing about real civil rights events into fiction and therefore memorialising these terrible events and making them known to a wider audience ( I’m in the UK and we are not taught about American History ) is an exceptional talent.Southern Man is just a simply amazing, utterly page-turning gripping thriller that had me holding my breath and gasping several times as the events unfolded! It’s clear that Penn Cage is based on Greg himself but why the heck not, it makes for a deep and more loveable character! An outstanding read and one that has gone straight into my top 5 this year. Thank you @gregiles for writing even though you’ve been through hell with your health. The Penn Cage series is one of THE all-time greats of American fiction, and I urge you all to read them. I wish you many more years ahead and hope you can keep writing! You Sir are a Legend of fiction!Huge 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Star read!

Vue la qualité de ses précédents livres et la médiocrité de celui-ci, on en arriverait presque à se demander si c'est Greg Iles qui en est l'auteur ... c'est dire! Bref, à éviter ... Je précise que je l'ai fini mais cela a été, de bout en bout, un véritable pensum.

Review: I have always enjoyed Greg Iles books. So sad but so true. Lots of racism throughout history. Being Métis I have experienced it myself. We are all born with a heart and a pair of lungs only differences are the colour of our skin. Greg has so much history in this story plus fiction of course to make it captivating. I love the 900 plus pages and every page kept you anticipating what is coming next. Great story.
