UPDATED EDITION: The new edition includes these updates:
The updated edition numbers the questions and answers. This helps to easily find the correct answers in the back of the book.100% of the answers to the updated edition have been independently verified both by computer and by an international math whiz.
AUTHOR: Chris McMullen earned his Ph.D. in physics from Oklahoma State University and currently teaches physics at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He developed the Improve Your Math Fluency series of workbooks to help students become more fluent in basic math skills.

CONTENTS: This Algebra Essentials Practice Workbook with Answers provides ample practice for developing fluency in very fundamental algebra skills - in particular, how to solve standard equations for one or more unknowns. These algebra 1 practice exercises are relevant for students of all levels - from grade 7 thru college algebra. This workbook is conveniently divided up into seven chapters so that students can focus on one algebraic method at a time. Skills include solving linear equations with a single unknown (with a separate chapter dedicated toward fractional coefficients), factoring quadratic equations, using the quadratic formula, cross multiplying, and solving systems of linear equations. Not intended to serve as a comprehensive review of algebra, this workbook is instead geared toward the most essential algebra skills. An introduction describes how parents and teachers can help students make the most of this workbook. Students are encouraged to time and score each page. In this way, they can try to have fun improving on their records, which can help lend them confidence in their math skills.

PRACTICE: With no pictures, this workbook is geared strictly toward learning the material and developing fluency through practice.

EXAMPLES: Each section begins with a few pages of instructions for how to solve the equations followed by a few examples. These examples should serve as a useful guide until students are able to solve the problems independently.

ANSWERS: Answers to 100% of the exercises are tabulated at the back of the book. This helps students develop confidence and ensures that students practice correct techniques, rather than practice making mistakes. All answers from the updated edition have been verified both by computer and independently by an international math whiz.

PHOTOCOPIES: The copyright notice permits parents/teachers who purchase one copy or borrow one copy from a library to make photocopies for their own children/students only. This is very convenient if you have multiple children/students or if a child/student needs additional practice.

NOTE: The answer key uses standard form. Fractions are expressed as reduced fractions, denominators are rationalized, and perfect squares are factored out of square roots. For example, if you receive an answer of 1 over root 8, the answer key will instead show root 2 over 4; both answers are the same, but the answer key uses standard form.

Algebra Essentials Practice Workbook with Answers

Chris McMullen, Ph.D.

Practice solving equations for x.The problems in the last chapter have two unknowns: x and y. Plenty of practice exercises

Each chapter contains ample practice exercises.Three keys to building fluency in algebra are: practice, practice, practice. Build confidence

The answer to every problem is included. When you get the right answer, this helps to build confidence. If you get an answer wrong, study your solution, rework the problem, or review the examples so that you can learn from your mistake. The answers are in standard form: fractions are reduced, denominators are rationalized, and perfect squares are factored out of square roots.

Topics include: combine like terms to isolate the unknown linear equations with fractional coefficients simple quadratic equations (factor to get all possible solutions) factor quadratic equations use the quadratic formula cross multiplying (sometimes resulting in a quadratic) systems of equations (solve by substitution or simultaneously)

Develop fluency in solving equations for the unknown(s).

Brief Description
Build fluency with essential algebra skills through practice. Ideal for students who could benefit from more comprehensive algebra coverage, detailed explanations, and more fully solved/explained examples. Excellent for students who are learning algebra. Excellent preparation for algebra, finishing with a taste of beginning algebra skills. Includes the order of operations. Intended for students who need a lot of practice with combining like terms and factoring. Also includes distributing, the FOIL method, and isolating the unknown. Focused solely on the algebra of word problems. Focused on solving 2 equations with 2 unknowns or solving 3 equations with 3 unknowns using different methods, including Cramer's rule.

Title: Just what I needed
Review: I needed to brush up on several items in math to pass my fundamentals of engineering exam. This is just what I needed lots of practice problems. I bought several of his books and so far I am well pleased. I think when I get through these books. I will actually be able to pass the math section for engineering. 🏆 I tried another online program, but I got buried in so much information and other things. These are really easy and simple and I can pack around one book at a time. Also, I don’t have to print anything. Everything‘s here in the book versus some of the online stuff. You need to download a bunch of files and print them all off. Then put them in a binder. That program may work for other people, but I just got too much on my plate. This book is perfect for me. Thanks Chris.

Title: Best algebra teaching tool I've found
Review: This book makes algebra easier to understand than anything I've ever used. I love that the explanations are clear. So many books don't have enough practice problems, but this one has tons. I feel like the author made sure a person learning algebra will master a concept before moving on to the next concept.

Title: Good practice book
Review: I bought this for my 8th grader that I homeschool. Each chapter starts out with about 3 pages of explanations and examples followed by 10-20 pages of problems with at least 9 on each page. I like the extra practice to make sure he has plenty of time and practice to get each process figured out, but there is quite possible too many problems for many students. I will most likely have him skip pages once he has the section mastered. On the plus side, it doesn't skip through the sections too fast and not give the students time to really learn the material. The explanations and examples are a little dry. It doesn't show much for explanations for each step. It definitely helps to have some Algebra under your belt already before starting on this book.

Title: Good
Review: Bought for my daughter to work on over the summer as she was starting algebra the next school year. She said it was easy to follow and she learned so much that now that she has started algebra in school, she already knows how to do everything and is a little bored in class!

Title: must know algebra a little already
Review: Got for my kids. I had to print several worksheets outside of this book to further explain basic algebra concepts. Many of the equations in this book are answered in fractions. The kids who have not had much experience with algebra are typically uncomfortable with fractions as answers.I taught my kids pre-algebra last year and have had them do several basic algebra lessons this year. This book provided many examples, but i feel it moves too quickly. I find myself printing several supplemental worksheets to be sure they master the concept of each section fully. There is also not enough room to work the problem out. If there was some more room and maybe a few tiny lines to write on underneath each example, then it would be more clear and simplified so kids new to these concepts could really see what they're doing and work it step by step.

Title: Not A Beginner Book
Review: This might be a good book for a student who has been fairly good at math but is complaining that the teacher doesn't explain well. It would give a good student a different way of learning the material if the teacher's teaching style is not a good match for the student's learning style. Or it could be a good book to use with a tutor or a parent or a friend who is good at math but not used to teaching math.

Review: The number of exercise, starting with simpler ones first and with examples, help my two kids 10 & 12 to practice solving algerbra equations. The explanations are clear and with examples. The answers do not round to perfect integers, which is good practice for the kids to get used to handling fractions as answers and that not everything in maths rounds to perfect integers.

Review: Excellent book for getting familiar again with one of the most important topics in math. Basic concepts and explanations are compiled well on each topic and worked solutions are clear. Has many examples to keep you busy and I'm sure the author has linked each topic as a process of synthesis-well done!!

Customers say

Customers find the explanations and examples in the book very direct and accessible. They also say the book makes algebra easier to understand and has a short lesson for each problem category. Readers mention the book is worth the price and a great buy. However, some customers have reported that some of the answers in the answer key are wrong. Opinions are mixed on the writing quality, with some finding it well-written and good for writing out problems, while others say it's hard to read and filled with filler.
