“This cookbook, based on Michael and Daniel’s successful Meatball Shop restaurant, is comforting and full of life. Written in an easygoing voice that is fun and inspiring, it reflects America’s love affair with meatballs and now makes them accessible to everyone.”—Scott Conant, chef and owner of Scarpetta restaurants, TV personality

The Meatball Shop has quickly grown into a New York City dining destination. Food lovers from around the city and beyond are heading down to Manhattan’s Lower East Side for a taste of this breakout comfort food phenomenon. In this fun and satisfying cookbook, chef Daniel Holzman and general manager Michael “Meatball Mike” Chernow open up their vault of secrets and share nearly 100 recipes—from such tried-and-true favorites as traditional Bolognese Meatballs and Mediterranean Lamb Balls to more adventurous creations like their spicy Mini-Buffalo Chicken Balls and Jambalaya Balls.

Accompanying the more than twenty meatball variations are recipes for close to a dozen delectable sauces, offering endless options to mix and match: from Spicy Meat to Parmesan Cream to Mango Raisin Chutney. And what would a meatball meal be without succulent sides and simple salads to round out the menu: Creamy Polenta, Honey Roasted Carrots, and Marinated Grilled Eggplant, just to name a few. You’ll also find helpful tips on everything from choosing the best cuts of meat to creating the perfect breadcrumbs to building the ultimate hero sandwich.

There may not be a Meatball Shop near you—yet—but there’s a meatball for everyone (and lots more) in this crowd-pleasing cookbook that will have them lining up outside your kitchen.

“Daniel and Michael have built a business that is truly special, and this book is an accurate reflection of the kind of guys they are. Finally a book about balls written by two guys who have a big enough pair to impress even me.”—Andrew Zimmern, chef, author, and host of Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods

Title: American pub grub done really, really well ...
Review: I recently bought two "meatball" books; this one and Global Meatballs by Adeline Myers. If you want the world cuisine treatment that includes dozens of recipes from every culture then you would be best served by the latter book. The Meatball Shop Cookbook on the other hand has about 25 recipes based on beef, pork, chicken, duck, rabbit, fish plus a veggie ball version if you're so inclined. But, unlike the Global Meatball book TMS includes side dishes, salads, sauces, dressings and desserts (including their homemade ice cream recipes) that turn even the most mundane midweek meatball night into a gastro-pub event. This is seriously good food and the book shows it off in the best light with gorgeous pics of almost every dish. They also provide some basic culinary technique to teach the uninitiated how to make a flavorful meatball that's tender and moist yet holds together no matter how it's sauced or combined with other ingredients. The cooking tips are spread throughout the entire book so you might want to do a little reading before you start that first batch of balls. As I said, I bought the two books and appreciate both, but Global Meatballs really focuses on authentic world cuisine recipes while TMS is inherently American pub grub done really, really well.

Title: On Par with the Restaurant
Review: This is a really great cookbook! I've dined at the Meatball Shop in NYC and have made several recipes from the book, and I have to say that the cookbook yields results that are completely on par with what you will eat at the actual restaurant. I know other restaurant cookbooks that are a little off from what you actually get when you dine in, and nothing irritates me more than that. The Meatball Shop Cookbook will bring all of the amazing flavors straight to your home. And best of all, the recipes are easy to prepare and freeze well, so you can make your efforts last even longer. I only wish it contained some of their delicious homemade lemonade recipes (it DOES contain cookie and ice cream recipes to make some of their outstanding ice cream sandwiches--almost better than the meatballs themselves!).

Title: Oh for the love of meatballs ....
Review: My daughter took us to the restaurant when we visited her in the city in April. It was really good. Our visit with her was great, however, and I decided to buy the cookbook when we got home as a sort of memento. The first thing I made was the recipe for roasted carrots because I liked them so much in the restaurant. They are great. Just great. But everything I've made out of this book is great! Tonight I made Drunken Pork Balls, with the carrots, of course, cilantro yogurt sauce, and the arugula and apple salad. It was an amazing dinner. The apple cider vinaigrette is great and I will make it all the time. The Drunken Balls were perfect. It's just a great book. It's full of super recipes that are really fun to mix and match. I'm going to buy a few copies to have around to give as gifts. Tomorrow I'm making the roasted fennel!

Title: Worth buying
Review: I checked it out from a library first and found it worthwhile buying. I gives a nice range of recipes beyond the ubiquitous italian meatball and has some interesting side dishes and sauces. It gives good advice on how to make a big batch with the least amount of fuss. It really deserves a five for what it is, a small specialty cookbook, but because of the price I settled on four stars.

Title: These are just.....Good!!
Review: I received the book about a week ago and as is my routine, I read through it before trying any of the recipes. Today, I made the Classic Beef Meatballs and the Classic Tomato Sauce because these are the 'starter' recipes. Oh boy! If it gets better from here, I'm going to be eating well and happily. These were great!! They were both simple to make with mostly basic ingredients that weren't hard to find. The half-teaspoon of ground fennel (I couldn't find this, so I tossed some whole fennel seeds into the coffee grinder) added a different, but pleasant dimension to the meatballs. The combination of meatballs and sauce reminded me of a favorite Italian restaurant and now I can replicate that cuisine at home. Highly recommended!

Title: Tasty!
Review: If you are seeking good pub food this is the book for that! Meatballs to sides to dressings, everything is tasty. It seems as though the bad reviews are coming from people who haven’t cooked more than one recipe.

Title: Worth every penny
Review: This book is one of the rare examples of comprehensive, detailed, nicely designed cookbook with lost of photos and great texts. I even searched for other books of the same author but seems this is the only one.The only disappointing thing about this book (that has nothing to do with the content of the book (and it will be never enough to repeat how excited I am about this cookbook, and I have quite a few dozens of cookbooks) is that my copy came to me with missing pages. So so much disappointing.... My copy was sold by New Chapter Recycling, Inc. (-bearbooks-), used book in good condition as it was described on the Amazon site, and fulfilled by Amazon, so I can't quite understand how Amazon let this seller sell defective book.I like the book so much that I will reorder, to keep a good copy in my library, but honestly Amazon should not cooperate with such sellers. The book is worth six stars, and I am giving three only for the condition of the copy.

Review: I just received the book and my mouth is watering just reading the recipes. Besides meatballs, there is also a chapter on sauces (classic tomato, spicy meat sauce, spinach-basil pesto, parmesan cream sauce, L.E.S. Barbecue sauce, mushroom gravy, lemon cream sauce, sauce vierge, salsa roja, peanut sauce, mango raisin chutney, cilantro yogurt sauce, blue cheese dressing and thousand island dressing), on sides, veg, salads and sweets. The recipes call for fresh and quality ingredients (nothing processed here). This will be a go-to book.

Review: I use an American restaurant and recipe site called Tasting Table. It was one of these daily intro's that I came across a review of this restaurant in New York called The Meatball Shop. I noticed that on their merchandise list was their new book. At first I contacted The Meatball Shop about having this book shipped to the UK and then discovered that you could get it on Amazon Books UK so immediately sent off for it. It has given me a lot of pleasure and several of the recipes I have tried and they do taste fantastic and very authentic compared with similar Italian meatball sauces eaten in Italy. However, not only beef meatballs but 'balls' made out of vegetables, fish and every type of meat you can imagine, Chicken, Turkey, Lamb, Pork etc, etc as well as all manner of combinations, the right choice of pasta, rice, noodles, quinoia, and even cous cous. The book also has desserts, salads and side orders with great detailed recipes and super photography. If you think you would like traditional New York Meatballs such as seen in the movie 'Goodfellers' or 'Once Upon A Time In America', then this is your book.
