A strategy-filled handbook to understand, manage, and conquer your own stress.
Anxiety disorders-grouped into three main categories: panic, generalized anxiety, and social anxiety-are among the most common and pervasive mental health complaints. From the subtlest effect of sweaty palms during a work presentation to the more severe symptom of reclusion, anxiety casts a wide net.
Medication, once considered the treatment of choice, is losing favor as more and more sufferers complain of unpleasant side effects and its temporary, quick-fix nature. Now, thanks to a flood of fresh neurobiology research and insights into the anatomy of the anxious brain, effective, practical strategies have emerged allowing us to manage day-to-day anxiety on our own.
Addressing physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms, Margaret Wehrenberg, a leading mental health clinician, draws on basic brain science to highlight the top ten anxiety-defeating tips. Everything from breathing techniques and mindful awareness to cognitive control and self-talk are included-all guaranteed to evict your anxious thoughts. 20 illustrations

Title: Excellent, concise, helpful
Review: I purchased the Kindle version of this book for my iPad, and while I think that the technology of Kindle on iPad is subpar, I was thankfully able to grasp the author's concepts. I should also mention that I've never written a review before, but now that I'm anxiety free for my second month after experiencing sometimes debilitating generalized anxiety, I had to share my adoration for this book. The key to success lies in her contention that we must not allow our brains - even for a moment - to venture down the, "Oh, what's wrong with me? I feel strange. Why can't I shake this? Will I ever heal? Am I dying?" path. Her method for stopping the train of awful thoughts is to repeat "No. No I will not go there" repeatedly. It sounds simple, infantile, maybe crazy, but by nipping those thoughts in the bud the very instant they occur (or recur) you can truly divert the mind. (She explains the science of why this works in chapter 1.) In moments when I feel anxiety creeping in again, I repeat NO NO NO about 15 times. I count them in mind. I continue to do that until I've distracted myself sufficiently. Even if it takes 100 NO's, I persist. I picked up this book during one of my longer bouts with anxiety; it truly began to feel endless until I implemented this method, and within 2 weeks I was anxiety free and asking myself what in the hell I was worrying about in the first place. It works, I promise!

Title: The Right Prescription for My Situation
Review: I ordered this text as an immediate self-help resource. It was most helpful. Honestly, I was skeptical of the title, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. Six weeks before ordering it, I had experienced sleeplessness and blood-pressure spikes, and I almost dreaded going to bed at night. The book helped me immediately to relax with the early emphasis on breathing and mindfulness. For about two months, I was on a light dose of Ambien and Xanax. I no longer require either. The combination of the application of the suggestions given in the book and my blood pressure medication enabled me to return to a high degree of normalcy in terms of sleeping well. The book is an easy, fun read and is very practical and focused. It was well worth the money!!

Title: Extremely informative and helpful
Review: This book helped me so much. The book starts with a lay description of what goes on in the brain during anxiety or panic. I found this very helpful, and it also helps the patient understand how the different medications and techniques help to counter those problems. It helps to understand WHY a particular therapy is used. The insights I gained into my reactions to the feeling of anxiety were the most helpful - it helped me learn that inappropriate anxiety didn't mean that something was wrong and I should go look for the problem, but that I should learn to discard the anxiety and get on with my life. The techniques are useful and simple, several of which are simply relaxation techniques that almost any busy person would find beneficial.I don't have a major anxiety disorder but I still found the book very helpful. I was very glad to be able to get it for my Kindle too - I was going away on a trip and had just had an anxiety episode, so having an immediate resource to turn to was very reassuring.Very readable, very useful. Highly recommended.

Title: So-So
Review: Definitely a great read for those who are new or looking for the beginning information and basics on Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), as well as panic and social disorders. I found some of the techniques and practices to be very helpful and I continue practicing them today. However, I felt there are a lot of filler information and a lot of in depth information that was not needed, but I can see the value. Some parts are very thick with medical gargin and how to your breaks works under different conditions. All and all if you have a social or panic disorder, or GAD, and you don't have any information to begin yourself with then this is definitely a great read to pick up for a reasonable price, and can easily be kept for a go to book for answers.

Title: useful for almost everyone
Review: This book provides an overview of how the different parts of your brain interact to perpetuate anxiety, fear and worry. It then gives specific techniques for handling the physical symptoms, the troubling thoughts and the behaviours that make things worse. What I like the most is that she points out where people can go wrong using these techniques and how to avoid common pitfalls in trying to apply them. She also recognizes that some issues require more than a self help approach. No matter your theoretical background, you can find something useful in this book.

Title: Everyone could benefit from reading this book
Review: If you're suffering from anxiety, buy this book. Read it. Then read it again. I wish I had found this book early on in my search for both how to understand and how to fix what was happening to me.First of all, the techniques the author suggests are simple and straightforward. Second of all, they work. I had no idea how important my diet and exercise was to my mental well-being, and after implementing the techniques in this book, I started feeling better immediately. As a side note, there are a few different types of anxiety. This book actually talks about all of them, so whether it's panic attacks that you're experiencing, or whether you have social or generalized anxiety, this book will likely help you.

Review: I have bought 2 additional copies of this book and given them to help others.Hi-light sections that make sense to you and practise the simple techniques and you will be astonished by the difference it will make to you.Don't worry about knowing how your brain works, just focus on the fact that it is your brain, not you, that creates anxiety and dread. Very simple. They are only feelings, nothing is wrong, breathe and say STOP to your negative thoughts and your anxiety will ebb away until your positive thoughts can take over. Marvelous book.ð

Review: I really liked this book. The ideas are practical, fully developed. I liked the introductory information on brain anatomy, functioning, and neurochemicals, and how this information carried through to the Anxiety Management techniques. This is the first book that explained neurochemicals clearly enough that I could understand.

Review: For me, who does not go to any psychologist, this book was very enlightening, with some good practical tips that I could use right away. The first part of the book gives a real simple and very interesting explanation of how the brain does what it does, so everyone can understand the basics of the brain functions.
