When Dr. Walt Larimore moved his young family to Kissimmee, Florida, to start a small-town medical practice in 1985, he had no idea he was embarking on an enterprise that would change his life in ways both large and small. But there's no telling what you'll run into as a family physician in a rural, small-town community.

Perfect for anyone yearning for a simpler, slower pace of life, as well as fans of Dr. Larimore's popular Bryson City series, The Best Medicine is a tender and insightful collection of stories chronicling one young doctor's passage from inexperience to maturity as a physician, husband, father, and community member. Filled with characters colorful and crusty, warm-hearted and hot-headed, witty and winsome, these captivating stories glow with warmth, love, and humor. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll wish Dr. Larimore was your doctor.

Title: Great Read!
Review: I enjoyed Dr Walt’s depiction of life as a small-town physician. His exacting description of his patients, fellow physicians, friends and the quaintness of Kissimmee, reflected a vividness in style similar to another great storyteller, Garrison Keillor. His “family style” of serving up rich memories of his personal faith journey, bringing his and his wife, Barb’s, Christian walk into everyday life and work, give an excellent example of living one’s faith every day.I especially enjoyed the wholesomeness of the friendships described throughout the book. If you ever wondered what an ideal mentoring relationship consisted of, you will see it conveyed in the most God-honoring and simplistic way. If you are a fan of small-town rodeos, the book will make you feel like you have seen the event from both the press box and the medical tent. Most of all, for all those people who struggle with balancing an incredible spouse and children with the responsibility of a demanding career, there are some excellent, sometimes painful, life lessons.I recommend Walt’s tenderness approach for anyone who wants to laugh a little, cry a little, and be inspired to be a better Christ follower.

Title: A Refreshing, Positive, Good Read!
Review: This book was hard to put down once I picked it up. It is written with such honesty, clarity, and transparency, that you can't help falling in love with all of the characters mentioned throughout the book. Dr. Walt comes across as a professional storyteller, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat with every recollection. Further, he speaks of his growing Christian faith with such humility and candor as he even points out his own flaws throughout the book, which is refreshing in a world where people like to place themselves on pedestals. Naturally, the book deals with a lot of medical issues, scenarios, and circumstances, but the author never writes in such a way that common people like myself don't understand what is going on, and even though there is a lot of medical stuff, there are enough references to raw, real, everyday life to keep the average "non-medical" person very interested and drawn into the life story of Dr. Walt.ANYONE can enjoy this book, no matter their life stage, career, or profession. However, as a Christian father of young children, I especially found it to be very helpful for me as I seek to grow as a dad, husband, and most importantly, a follower of Jesus Christ. Though this book challenged me to grow in my faith and how I live it out, the tone of the author was never confrontational, judgmental, or legalistic in any way.Bottom line: this book is an enjoyable, refreshing, and pleasurable read. If you're a father, husband, and/or dad, I ESPECIALLY encourage you to get a copy!

Title: Great vacation or beach read.
Review: I don’t think we could describe Kissimmee, Florida, as a small town anymore, but when the Larimore family moved there in 1985, it still was.In The Best Medicine, Dr. Walt shares stories from his practice, his family and his personal journey. Walt is a storyteller - and a pretty good one. Perhaps I cared more about the people in this book because I know Walt, Barb, Kate and Scott, and Dr John Hartman delivered my youngest three children. But I don’t think so. Walt has an endearing way of telling a story, it’s humor and lessons that draws a reader to keep reading. Towards the end, Walt’s mentor shares a spiritual insight I had never thought about before - and will continue to ponder. But really, my pressing question is: Dr Walt - will you share your recipe for pain perdu in the next book?!If you’re looking for a light-hearted, hopeful vacation or beach read, pick up The Best Medicine - and for good measure, its prequels The Bryson City Tales. You won’t be disappointed.

Title: Good read.
Review: Fun, light reading, althought "draggy" at times. Good moral values expressed with Biblical references. Being from a small town in the west (at least back then), I related well to the imagery portrayed. Recommended for "city slickers" who want to see how the "other half" live.

Title: Awesome stories from the life of a family physician
Review: Having read Dr. Larimore's Bryson City series about 4 years ago, I could hardly wait till his Kissimmee book, The Best Medicine, was published. But life intervened and I didn't get this book until July 2022. I was not disappointed. I laughed and I cried, and it brought back poignant memories of my own medical career many years ago. Not just the gripping medical stories (those are great), but the sweet insights he shared from his mentor, his precious little daughter Kate, and his beloved wife Barb were all priceless. He writes with such humility and transparency of his own shortcomings, and that is rare in a doctor! The hair-raising antics of his young son Scott were funny and scary at the same time. And amazingly he drove his father's old truck to work every day for 15 years despite the jibes (and offers) from the doctors around him in their expensive cars. He was content to just be himself and didn't cave in to pressure from his peers. He was an excellent family physician, but also an awesome family man and a great writer. I could hardly wait to read the next book in the series.

Review: Enjoyed the stories immensely. Appreciate him leveling about his thoughts and inner conflicts and sharing his spiritual guidance and growth and how he lives it out in his private and professional life. It's so refreshing reading of an honest man. Wealth, fame and pleasure consume our materialistic society and to find and live for eternal values is very encouraging.
