rancis Ouimet and Harry Vardon came from different worlds and different generations, but their passion for golf set them on parallel paths that would collide in the greatest match their sport had ever known. A young Massachusetts native, Francis was only three years removed from his youthful career as a lowly caddie. Harry was twice his age, the greatest British champion in history, and innovator of the modern grip and swing. Through exacting hard work, perseverance, and determination, Vardon had escaped a hopeless life of poverty; the unknown Ouimet dared to dream of following in his hero's footsteps. When the two men finally came together in their legendary battle at the 1913 U.S. Open, its heartstopping climax gave rise to the sport of golf as we know it today. Weaving the stories of Ouimet and Vardon as his narrative, Mark Frost creates a uniquely involving, intimate epic; equal parts sports biography, sweeping social history, and emotional human drama. Including historical photographs, The Greatest Game Ever Played is sure to be a must-read for millions of sports and history fans, and all who have ever dared to reach for their dreams.

Title: Outstanding from the beginning
Review: A very detailed and inspiring book about the players and what they accomplished not only on the golf course but through the course of their lives. A very enjoyable read with plenty of ebb and flow to various victories.

Title: Great history lesson and insight to golf's early days. Wonderful read!!
Review: If my history professors in school could put the early days of the 20th century in perspective as Mark Frost has here, I would have loved class!! Golfers will not be able to put this book down. Even if you don't know what end of the club to hold, I promised you'll love the stories. BUT when you finish Greatest Game Ever Played, consider reading Frost's The Match and Grand Slam!

Title: Brilliant.
Review: Part history, part biography, part sports hero mythology, TGGEP tells the story of two golfers: English professional Harry Vardon and US amateur Francis Ouimet, and the golfing worlds they inhabited, destined to meet in the 1913 US Open in a match that would change the game of golf forever.Splendidly well told, with little nuggets of lore sprinkled throughout (did you know that the golf 'bogey' and the 'boogieman' share a common origin?), this was a can't-put-down read which led me to more of the author's books. Next up: The Match.Highly recommended.

Title: well-written and enthralling
Review: I never thought I would get into a golf book, but I couldn’t put this down, even though I knew the outcome. I loved the wonderful metaphors that brought the great event to life. And it was satisfying to cheer for a real hero again, Francis Ouimet, as well as his colorful side kick Eddie Lowery.

Title: Highly enjoyable
Review: One of the things that impressed me the most about this book is how the author succeeded in practically making a novel out of this non-fiction story. This added even more depth and drama to a story that had plenty to begin with. I mean let's face it--one has to assume that 99% of the dialogue had to be invented out of whole cloth. There is no reason to suspect that much more than that would have been recorded for posterity. And yet all of the dialogue seemed completely realistic. The author not only accounted for their difference in ages (ranging from Eddie Lowery at 10 years old on up), and their difference in nationalities, but also for the fact that this was 1913 and people presumably spoke a bit differently back then. I was also impressed by the extreme detail as to the actual golf matches themselves, not only at the 1913 U.S. Open itself but also at a number of tournments that preceded the Open. Is it possible that every single shot which Frost describes in such detail had been recorded somewhere in the contemporary records of the era? That seems just a little too hard to swallow. And if so, it makes his writing all that much more impressive. In any event, a great read.

Title: A must read for anyone with an interest in the game of golf
Review: This is a great book for golf fans, golfers and sports history buffs. As an avid golfer, I enjoyed it. I loved learning about the history of the sport and the men who created what became the professional golf tour. Likewise Mr. Frost was able, through exhaustive research, to get into the minds of the pioneers of the game to not only chronicle what they did or did not accomplish, but to make the reader feel he was witnessing history through the eyes of the participants. This true story has all the drama and suspense you would expect from a novel. To me, that makes it an even more compelling read. I recommend this book highly to anyone and everyone who plays golf or has an interest in the history of the sport.
