I CANNOT, YET I MUST is the amazing story of ROBOT MONSTER, the legendary 1953 gorilla-wearing-a-diving-helmet no-budget epic that sums up an entire era of film history. Determined to crack Hollywood and fully aware of what he was up against, director Phil Tucker crafted a profitable 3-D feature with very little money and very much ingenuity. Fascinating, surreal, hilarious and an incredible testament to getting the job done even when it is impossible, ROBOT MONSTER is now documented in detail. From the ballyhoo of producer Al Zimbalist to the eccentric life of writer Wyott Ordung, from Phil Tucker's previously unpublished memories to the significantly different script, I CANNOT, YET I MUST is the book that finally explores ROBOT MONSTER!

Title: One of the most amazing cinema books I've ever readâHighest Recommendation, for Ro-Man Devotees!
Review: Anders Runested has done the seemingly impossible: he has authored the definitive book on not just ROBOT MONSTER, but its makers, dispelling countless codified myths about writer Wyatt Ordung and especially director Phil Tucker. This is comprehensive, exhaustive, and highly entertaining from stem-to-sternâand it's a bargain at any price! Over 675 pages (!!!) on one of the most bizarre, beloved, boon-doggling and mind-boggling movies ever made and Tucker's other films (an entire chapter on one of my personal favorite movies, THE CAPE CANAVERAL MONSTERS from 1960, made this even more worth the purchase to me). Highly recommended, fully illustrated and (just as importantly) fully annotated, I can't praise this writer or his book enough.

Title: One of My Favorite Film Books--Riveting!
Review: This book gets at the heart of why films like ROBOT MONSTER, DANCE HALL RACKET and THE CAPE CANAVERAL MONSTERS continue to rivet me. They flout logic, structure and coherence without appearing to be self-aware. It's a mind-set that doesn't exist anymore, to my sadness. Anders Runestad gets into the life and work of film veteran Phil Tucker, and paints a riveting portrait of the marginal world he lived and worked in.I've read this book three times in the past two years, and look forward to reading it a fourth time. If you treasure these marginal movies at face value, and their existence makes you happy, this book is must reading. It is guaranteed to enhance your understanding of why these films came out as they did--and how the series of events that occurred during their production could not be repeated in the ironic, self-aware milieu of the 21st century. If you've read this far, just buy the book. You will treasure it as I do.

Title: A Must For Every 1950s Sci-Fi Fan's Library
Review: Wow! Hooda thunk someone could write such a detailed, massive tome about one of the weirdest / wildest / worst movies ever AND STILL HAVE IT COME ACROSS SO ENTERTAININGLY? Anders Runestad has done a marvelous job tracking down the history, the myth, and the "mythtakes" of ROBOT MONSTER. His extensive research pays off in a fascinating, fast-paced, and fun read about the wild and woolly world of exploitation film making in the 1950s and some of the crazy people in it. Highly recommended!

Title: Great Read
Review: Amazingly detailed look at not just the making of the film, but also the life of Phil Tucker... and the making of several other of his films, such as Dance Hall Racket. It also looks at the lives of some of his key collaborators on Robot Monsters, such as Wyatt Ordung. Also includes the full original script of Robot Monster. It's a remarkable book.

Title: Loved It!
Review: Everything you wanted to know about this WONDERFULLY AWFUL movie and then some. A real treat. There is, however, a problem with the printing; there are numerous places where the letters fade and even disappear. It's still readable; nothing is lost, but it does get irritating after a while.

Title: Way too long for a book about a dumb sci fi movie
Review: While very well researched the author got way too into his subject manner. I've read books about the history of culturally significant movies and TV shows that were shorter than this book. Robot Monster is a goofy cult movie, it's not Star Trek, Gone With The Wind, 2001 or Star Wars. The book goes into excruciating detail on the life of the director, bad movies he made after Robot Monster and other things (the author even spends pages describing the comic books used in the title card of he movie). The book just went on and on and on and on. Nearly 700n pages (I missed that when I ordered it) is way too long for this subject matter. Unless Robot Monster is your absolute favorite movie ever pass on this book.
