Title: Great for movie buffs!
Review: I bought this for my husband who is a movie buff and a huge Peter Travers fan. He loved this book! Please note its not about the 1000 best movies but the 1000 best movies on DVD. Peter Travers reviews how they translate from the big screen to the little screen based on the soundtrack, extras, etc.

Title: BEWARE...Book is a Farce! The Author Does Not Know What He is Talking About!
Review: I should have borrowed this book or checked it out at the local book store first before making the mistake of purchasing it from Amazon and wasting my money. The author's lofty premise is that in order for any movie to make it into his top 1000 list in this book, it has to be a great movie PLUS it must have great video transfer quality. Ah, only if Mr. Travers had actually watched the DVDs for the movies in his list. The book fell apart when I started noticing movies that are well known for their extremely poor video transfer quality being promoted by the author as fantastic editions of the movie. For example, on page 127, he listed The Last Emperor, Director's Cut as the version of the movie on DVD to get. Any movie or DVD buff who loves this movie will know that this is probably the most atrocious video transfer, butchering job ever done for a movie. check out the reviews here on Amazon for this DVD version listed in the book:The Last Emperor - Director's Cut The DVD's video quality is poor, it is unwatchable, I know this for a fact because I own this DVD and I watched it! The author should be ashamed to be listing such a crappy DVD edition in his top 1000 list against his "criteria." This is just one example, and he lists many more DVDs of poor quality (both in terms of video transfer and just bad movies.)Based on this example and numerous others in this book, you can't trust anything this guy tells you in the book. Don't waste your money, you and I already know a lot more than Travers the "Rolling Stone Movie Critic."

Title: A great review book!
Review: I loved this book and recommend it highly. My only caveat is to have some time set aside to read through it. I was up for hours and hours, reading his reviews of movies that I have already seen, remembering the highlights of great movies. I couldn't put it down. If you love movies, and if you love your DVD machine, this book is a match made in heaven. Buy it. Buy it now.

Title: Makes a mistake about Bruce Lee
Review: When describing Enter the Dragon it claims the film is Lee's first speaking English. Wrong! Lee spoke english before in a movie he made with James Garner and Caroll O'Conner a few years before. Good enough book outside of thsi though I disagree Brando was so ultra-great in On the Waterfront and bad in Superman.

Title: The best movie review book. Period.
Review: I have several other movie review books and they're all sitting on the shelf collecting dust. So I approached this book by Peter Travers with some reservation. Not to worry, this is the only movie review book that matters. Here's why:1. Travers likes movies for the same reason you and I like movies. He's not trying to come across as a cinema professor. He clearly doesn't give a hoot about a film's rep with other critics - there are so called classic movies that aren't here and there are many others (e.g. Die Hard and Independence Day) that other critics would never include in a book of the best. When he uses terms such as "eye popping colors" and "gives your home theater system a real workout", it's clear that he likes movies like we like movies. Don't think for a second, though, that, based on those examples, this is oriented to modern action flicks. Every genre and every period is well represented. It's just that, for Mr. Travers, "good" doesn't HAVE to mean "old" or "foreign".2. Unlike other books which critique at least 5000 movies (often much more), Travers has done the filtering and focuses only on what he considers to be the very best films, especially focusing on those that come across the best on DVD. I love that approach. Why waste ink and paper (and your time) to review crap like "Jaws 3" and "Nash Pluto"? By just focusing on the good stuff, Travers has a lot more space to explain why the movie is good. That makes every page in the book essential reading.3. He has wisely avoided a star system which just gets readers upset wondering why their favorite movie didn't get more stars. It also doesn't try to put them in order from 1 (best) down to 1000. He clearly thinks all these movies are pretty terrific and, by simply listing them in alphabetical order, it encourages you to read about them all. That ends up putting a lot more DVDs on your "must watch" list than you otherwise would have.4. Travers is a really entertaining writer, often quite funny too. These aren't cerebral pontifications, they come across as musings from a regular guy who happens to love movies. So that makes this more than just a reference book, it's one you really enjoy reading cover to cover.5. He does an excellent job in explaining why a movie is worth watching. For that reason, you'll have a much better idea whether each movie is one that you really want to see. In many cases I could see why Travers was so impressed with the movie, but his detailed description made me realize it's just not my thing. The worst thing you can do is dismiss a book like this on the basis of the movies he left out (or included). Face it, no two people are going to have the same views on 1000 movies so put the quibbling aside in advance. This book is not meant to be a list, it's meant to help the reader find great DVDs to buy or rent. After reading this, you're certain to have ticked off at least 150 DVDs that you really want to see. And you will have been greatly entertained in the process. What more could you want from a book of this type?

Review: 2 and a half really... and constantly going down because of it's very nature. Upon its publication, the book was no doubt a good resource for DVD collectors looking to own the best edition of a particular film. However, that was years ago and some of the movies reviewed have had more than one re-release since then. As a result, the book is totally outdated. I still had a good time reading some of Mr. Travers reviews. When it comes to rating the best extra on each of the DVDs, Mr. Travers shows great creativity by coming up with so many ways to say a DVD is bare-bones; Sadly, this gets boring pretty fast. I wish he would simply have done an overview of the special features or simply mention the lack thereof if that was the case. Seriously, a French audio track or a pan-scan version of the film in no way qualifies as an extra! And my first language is French. I recommend you check out some of the great DVD review sites instead of shelling out precious cash for this relic.
