“From the original tale . . . to the Broadway musical . . . thoughtful film analysis and a thrilling final coup: an interview with the real Eve.” —People

To millions of fans, All About Eve represents all that’s witty and wonderful in classic Hollywood movies. Its old-fashioned, larger-than-life stars—including Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, and Celeste Holm—found their best roles in Eve and its sophisticated dialogue has entered the lexicon.

But there’s much more to know about All About Eve. Sam Staggs has written the definitive account of the making of this fascinating movie and its enormous influence on both film and popular culture. Staggs reveals everything about the movie—from who the famous European actress Margo Channing was based on to the hot-blooded romance on-set between Bette Davis and costar Gary Merrill, from the jump-start the movie gave Marilyn Monroe’s career and the capstone it put on director Joseph L. Mankeiwicz’s.

All About “All About Eve” is not only full of rich detail about the movie, the director, and the stars, but also about the audience who loved it when it came out and adore it to this day.

“Written in a chatty style that can be laugh-out-loud-funny . . . Stagg’s engaging study should be the last word on this enduring classic.—Publishers Weekly

“A truly comprehensive filmography. . . . Superbly referenced.” —Library Journal

“Traces the movie’s development from the short story that inspired it through a virtual production diary that [Stagg] fleshes out with interviews of many surviving contributors to the film.” —Booklist

Title: The Title Says It All.
Review: Yes, there's some bitchery in it. Some of the cast and crew had affairs. Some later married. Bette Davis and Celeste Holm disliked each other. When they first met, Holm swept in and uttered a cheery, "Good morning!", and Davis said, "Oh, s****, good manners." "Celestial" Holm remains the chief bitch for the rest of the book. (She refused an interview with the author.)That stuff doesn't interest me but so what? It is part of the story of the film, after all, and the film itself, with its theatrical script -- "theatrical" in both senses -- was, at the time, and still is one of Hollywood's most popular products. I don't care if it's pseudo-art or real art. The movie beats something like "The Scorpion King" all to hell. And I'd much rather read this book than Danielle Steele or Tom Clancy or, dare I say it, Steven King.Weaknesses. Maybe too much space was given over at the beginning to the originator of the story, Mary Orr, and to Elizabeth Bergner, who provided the model for one of the characters. And maybe the details of the follow-up stage musical, "Applause", were a bit much. I genuinely didn't care who got fired from a supporting role in "Applause" or what happened to her career after that. But aside from the first and last bits, it's a fascinating book. I'm not a big fan of bitch goddesses (or opera) but the movie itself is so entertaining that I watch it repeatedly on DVD. My favorite character is Addison De Witt, the moral nihilist. Judging from his dialog and from what we hear of his writing, he's no John Simon. You're going to hear about "dancing in the streets" but not about Aeschylus. But he and Birdie the maid are the only two characters who see things as they are. For the rest, events take place as if they were part of some carefully laid out script.A reader is likely to learn quite a bit from a short chapter towards the end, "Brief Lives, etc." It's a kind of annotation, explaining some of the less obvious allusions in the script. Who was George Jean Nathan, for instance? Well -- okay, that may be too easy. How about Richard Mansfield?

Title: Comes with some bitchy comments and anecdotes, as promised in the title.
Review: All About All About Eve: The Complete Behind-the-Scenes Story of the Bitchiest Film Ever Made! There are many books about « All About All About Eve », but I am glad to have this one now, with some bitchy comments and anecdotes, as promised in the title. The hardcover version, with a dust jacket, is really neat and swell.

Title: Way too much about All About Eve
Review: One of the best films about Hollywood (okay, okay, it takes place in the theater, but look between the lines, people) gets the overblown treatment in this tell-all book. For every piece of very interesting information (Bankhead vs. Davis, Davis vs. Holmes, director vs. studio), there are pages and pages of information which, while key to the making of "AAE", read like the resumes of people who died two decades ago.Still, "All About 'All About Eve'" still manages to pull out a few surprises. If you are a hopeless Margo Channing fan, buy and enjoy. Otherwise, visit your the local library and skim through the pages.

Review: Probably the most detailed account of the making of this classic film. Along with behind the scenes insights, a good look at the personalities involved, and of course it's great screen writer and director.

Title: ALL ABOUT DRAMA
Review: Excellent book, very well written. Just as much drama going on behind the scenes that there was in the movie. Could be a film in itself. Highly recommended.
