The story of a modern NFL that can’t get out of its own way—and can’t stop making money

In recent decades, the NFL has simultaneously become an athletic, financial, and cultural powerhouse—and a League that can’t seem to go more than a few weeks without a scandal. Whether it’s about domestic violence, performance-enhancing drugs, racism, or head trauma, the NFL always seems to be in some kind of trouble. Yet no matter the drama, the TV networks keep showing games, the revenue keeps rising, and the viewers keep tuning in.

How can a sports league—or any organization—operate this way? Why do the negative stories keep happening, and why don’t they ever seem to affect the bottom line? In this wide-ranging book, Mike Florio takes readers from the boardroom to the locker room, from draft day to the Super Bowl, answering these questions and more, and showing what really goes on in the sport that America can’t seem to quit.

Known for his constant stream of new information and incisive commentary, Florio delivers again in this book. With new insights and reporting on scandals past and present, this book will be the talk of the League—whether the League likes it or not.

Title: Very entertaining and a quick read
Review: I like to mess with Florio on Twitter but honestly this is a great book to read to get prepped for the season. The chapters are short and to the point while covering many of the big stories of the past.If there was no author printed on the front you would still know who wrote it.

Title: Enjoyable for Hardcore and Casual NFL fans.
Review: I enjoyed the format of shorter stories. Helped provide more detail and context to a lot of recent history of the NFL. Look forward to more Florio written books.

Title: Critical look at a big business
Review: I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book from a business perspective but as a longtime football fan, it’s a little hard sometimes because Florio doesn’t pull punches - he calls it as he sees it. I agree with a lot of what he opines but not everything. Anyway, it’s easy reading (although the Introduction could use some editing as his wording is superfluous and almost turned me off from reading the book - I’m glad it didn’t!) and full of behind the scenes stories. Well done. A much-needed, hard look at a big business.

Title: Rehash Of His Web Site
Review: I like author Mike Florio. I am a long time fan and a regular reader of profootballtalk.com. Most everything in this book is a retelling of opinions and ideas I have read on Florio's pro football talk web site.I cannot say I disliked the content. But nothing new for me. If you are a fan of The NFL, and not familiar with Florio's pro football talk, this is a good read about the business and sports politics of the league. But not much about Xs and Os.

Title: Florio is the only one with the guts to say it like it is.
Review: I have read several of the negative reviews on the book and wonder whether I read the same book they are commenting on? The negative reviews I read failed to contain any substantive criticisms, but mimicked Aaron’s Rodgers’ unsubstantiated comment “don’t read any of that crap.” In Playmakers, Florio gives the average fan a small window into the fascinating and exciting “BUSINESS” we call the NFL. It provides a broad framework that allows the reader to evaluate events as they occur in real time in the NFL. Florio points the reader to various areas of interest in this multifaceted billion dollar industry, and raises important questions that the NFL faces as the industry enters into the unknown and previously prohibited arena of legalized gambling on NFL games. The compilation of short essays is a format the busy reader will appreciate. This NFL fan and NFL outsider found the essays thought provoking, enlightening and entertaining, and gave me an added perspective through which I will view NFL events we embark on an exciting and entertaining 2022 season. Thanks for taking the time to compile and share them Mike. As for the negative reviews, “don’t read any of that crap.”.

Title: Great inside look into the NFL
Review: The book is well written. It is broken up into small chapters that make it easily digestible. I was looking forward to certain sections of the book and less forward to others. I found that I learned a lot from each section and he made the parts I didn’t initially think I would like very enjoyable. Don’t let the stack be decked against you, just buy this book if you are interested in how the NFL really works.

Title: interesting read
Review: If you can get past the format, it’s an interesting read of short 3 to 4 page thoughts. The end or conclusion could have been deeper about the future but super interesting nonetheless.

Review: This is a great book. It’s great because there’s nothing else like it out there. Mike Florio, and now this book, opens windows and doors into the world of the NFL THAT NO OTHER COMMENTATOR OR BOOK DOES. For those of us brought up in the 60s and 70s thousands of miles from the fields and pitches of the NFL, and fed only a distant, distorted and diluted version of NFL propaganda Playmakers, in a very readable and entertaining way, strips away the garbage. What we are left with, having read the book, and watched PFT Live, is a game we can access and enjoy all the more. I thoroughly recommend it to any lover of the truth, fan of the game, and sportsperson out there.

Review: This book is hardly as groundbreaking or eye-opening about how the NFL works. Instead, it feels like a recycle of many of ProFootballTalk posts that may have been edited for topical snippets.I regularly read ProFootballTalk and while I often appreciate Mike Florio’s legal analysis with his background, I’ve often tired of his articles which are little more than click-bait “what ifs?” And sadly this book delves into too many of those hypotheticals in my opinion. This book doesn’t demonstrate how the NFL really works or doesn’t work, but it is simply an anthology of articles about moments in NFL history. Overall, I felt the book failed to really give me any more of a “behind the scenes” look at the inner workings of the NFL any more than any sports news website, like ProFootballTalk

Title:
Review: This is an interesting book about American Football, written by the pundit from ProFootballTalk, Mike Florio. It covers a number of topics, mostly at a fairly surface level. Florio's writing style is quite concise and it feels like you are reading something in rapid fire - not dissimilar to his website. Nonetheless the content is interesting and especially given how different it is to Football and other sports (and indeed American sports as a whole are this way) it is a good read.

Review: I enjoy Mike Florio's PFT Live, so the book immediately appealed to me. The chapters cover a broad range of subjects in the NFL and each chapter is written in a relaxed style, which makes this book an easy and enjoyable read. If you're fan of Florio's work, or just like reading about the NFL then I highly recommend this book.
