***THE INSTANT New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and IndieBound BESTSELLER***

An NPR Book of the Day

Picking up where the New York Times bestselling Front Row at the Trump Show left off, this is the explosive look at the aftermath of the election—and the events that followed Donald Trump’s leaving the White House all the way to January 6—from ABC News' chief Washington correspondent.

Nobody is in a better position to tell the story of the shocking final chapter of the Trump show than Jonathan Karl. As the reporter who has known Donald Trump longer than any other White House correspondent, Karl told the story of Trump’s rise in the New York Times best seller Front Row at the Trump Show. Now he tells the story of Trump’s downfall, complete with riveting behind-the-scenes accounts of some of the darkest days in the history of the American presidency and packed with original reporting and on-the-record interviews with central figures in this drama who are telling their stories for the first time.

This is a definitive account of what was really going on during the final weeks and months of the Trump presidency and what it means for the future of the Republican Party, by a reporter who was there for it all. He has been taunted, praised, and vilified by Donald Trump, and now Jonathan Karl finds himself in a singular position to deliver the truth.

Title: The Best Political Book of 2021
Review: If you want all the facts and none of the typical hype or editorializing, Jon Karl’s Betrayal is the best Trump book I’ve read. What sets this book apart is the commitment to accuracy rather than ideological philosophy. Every moment he writes about is, at a minimum, double-sourced and triple checked. There’s no “some people have said” claims anywhere. This is what really happened, as told by the people who made it happen.Similarly, everyone who mattered in the Trump Administration is on-the-record – starting with Donald Trump himself. All the key players are interviewed, and readers get a refreshing chance to hear their exact words rather than a reporter’s summary. Equally important, he had unprecedented access to the President, and he gives Trump every opportunity to refute his critics point-by-point.There are five stories, told moment by moment by the people involved, that make this book so essential:First, the events of January 20th itself – exclusive to this book. As the President was departing the White House on Air Force One, for his final trip as president, Trump told the Chairman of the Republican Party that he was quitting the GOP and forming his own party. Karl details how the GOP leaders fought back, and why Trump reversed himself a week later.Second, and again a Betrayal exclusive, the real reason Trump announced he wouldn’t attend joe Biden’s inauguration was that he’d learned Mitch McConnell intended to uninvite him. To avoid embarrassment of being the first ex-president ever disinvited, Trump sent his very last tweet, saying he had decided not to attend. Trump vehemently denies this – but Karl lays out the facts.Third, and in some ways most important, Betrayal explores the relationship between Trump and Mike Pence in the days leading up to January 6th. For the first time in print, you get to hear both sides of the conflict from the people themselves – the public and private pressure Trump and his Administration put on his VP not to certify the election, and how Pence really felt about the events of January 6th. Warning: some of the language here is graphic.Fourth, Trump lays out exactly what he thought about his staff, his cabinet, his “allies” on Capital Hill – everyone. You’ll get to hear him unplugged, unfiltered and unedited – in his own words. But you’ll also learn just how many people who served the President walked (or ran) away in fear or disgust – particularly after Election Day 2020.And fifth, you don’t have to wait for the results of the Congressional Select Committee reviewing the events of January 6th. Every frightening moment of what actually happened in and around the Capitol is covered in Betrayal – including the untold stories and heroic efforts by Capitol security to keep Members safe. When it comes to Donald Trump, no book will satisfy everyone. But if you want to know exactly what happened behind the scenes, behind the cameras, and behind closed doors – and what people making the decisions really thought – Betrayal comes closer than any other.

Title: Excellent
Review: Well written and, I believe, well researched. Mr. Karl would surely have been witness to much of the mayhem through his role with ABC News. Thank you for your work!

Title: One of the best Trump books.
Review: After reading 22 books about Trump since 2016 (I ask for your pity), I put Karl's effort in the top 5. Stories of Trump's egregious, selfish behavior are repeated in many of these books, and they all run together, but Karl has more shocking revelations. It's also more up to date than other Trump books. I also recommend the unstilted Woodward books, Michael Wolf's stylish writing, and David Cay Johnston for the most unique look into Trump World and his sleazy business and tax patterns. That said, the Karl book is, as they say, a good read.

Title: Pence -- Betrayal, Disloyalty When It Mattered Most
Review: On November 8th I saw ABC News' Jonathan Karl appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The news Karl broke about the existence of photographic images of Pence hiding during the January 6th deadly Capital riot, as well as Pence's admirable role and actions on that horrible day got me to pre-order this book on Amazon that night. Karl's reporting on the relationship between Trump and Pence from election night until Biden's inauguration is riveting and frighteningly revealing. This book highlights Liz Cheney as the most admirably sensible and emotional stable Republican today in Washington. Karl does not say this -- but is Liz Cheney perhaps the Republican's best presidential hope in 2024 for a return this normalcy? Karl says he does not know if Trump will run for president again. Maybe Cheney will be his most formidable opponent?Maria Bartiromo is widely praised for her extensive work as a financial journalist on CNN, CNBC and Fox. Karl reports on many instances where Bartiromo helped Trump push and promote false claims of fraud the election. What happened to her?If you don't know who John McEntee then you should read this book. Reagan’s success was due in part to his willingness to surround himself with intelligent advisors and many differing opinions. McEntee symbolizes Trump’s presidential mania because McEntee spearheaded the elimination of constructive ideas and criticism around Trump. Karl describes how Trump devolves from depending on the honorable General John Kelly to the 28-year-old John McEntee, whose main job was to remove political appointees not loyal enough to Trump while hiring Rockette Dancers and Instagram Influencers with impeccable foreign policy experience.I enjoyed reading about ABC News reporter Will Steakin. Karl’s profile of him covering five huge Trump rallies a day while Biden chose the risk-adverse strategy of staying in his Wilmington basement convinced Steakin that -- despite the poll numbers -- Trump somehow would win again. Biden indeed did win decisively and fairly; however, history will view Joe Biden as the ultimate compromise candidate among a field more dynamic and inspiring democrats.Karl asserts that he has been critical of Pence over the years. However, by far the book's best breaking news is exactly how and when Pence "Betrayed Trump When It Mattered Most." Karl outlines Pence’s bravery and resoluteness on January 6th as he ensured the election results were certified by all 50 states despite the chaos and murder; this was a remarkable day in America's history and Pence did not disappoint.Karl details how many Cabinet members chose to manage Trump -- "The Effective Presidential Delay Tactic". Whether it was Esper or Miller, many Cabinet members were in agreement about how to save Trump and the Nation from the President himself: Treat him obsequiously as if disciplining a petulant teenage boy. This morning I finished Karl's book. I found myself pausing often to research individuals, events and articles referenced — the sign of a superb book, fiction or non-fiction.London, England

Review: Really accurate, straight to the point. It documents many of the later findings in the Jan 6th hearings. My only question is why is not Donald Trump in jail. If all this would’ve happened in Europe, no chance, he surely would’ve gone in front of a criminal tribunal.
