“There it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon.”

Like his father and grandfather before him, Kino is a poor diver, gathering pearls from the gulf beds that once brought great wealth to the Kings of Spain and now provide Kino, Juana, and their infant son with meager subsistence. Then, on a day like any other, Kino emerges from the sea with a pearl as large as a sea gull's egg, as "perfect as the moon." With the pearl comes hope, the promise of comfort and of security....

A story of classic simplicity, based on a Mexican folk tale, The Pearl explores the secrets of man's nature, the darkest depths of evil, and the luminous possibilities of love.

Title: He’s a commie but a great writer
Review: I really enjoyed this classic novella from a truly great writer. This story has the same anti capitalist message as his other works. But I can respect his opinion and appreciate the story and the writing.

Title: An old classic book, (The Pearl), that teaches a good life lesson by John Steinbeck
Review: Lately I have been rereading some of the old classics I had read in high school and college. One of these books I purchased on Amazon for a bargain price was this 90-page paperback edition, (The Pearl by John Steinbeck), which I found to be an amusing and interesting read even though I had read it more than 50 years ago.The short story, like many of the novels by John Steinbeck, deals with people who lead hard working lives. This particular novel takes place in Mexico and in some ways reflects the way many people thought about certain things in the 1940s.This story revolves around a family, who follows the same kind of work their ancestors did, which is diving for pearls in the Gulf. Unlike the early pearl searchers, Kino and Juana barely make enough to support their family; however, one day Kino pulls from the ocean a large pearl. He thinks this will finally make his family wealthy enough to get his family out of the meager living existence they now live in.As always, there are twists and turns and issues that make this an interesting read. I never give away too much information when reviewing any novel, but there is a lesson here we can all learn from in this family tale.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Martial Art and Warrior Haiku and Senryu).

Review: "It was a morning like other mornings and yet perfect among mornings"Aah this Mexican Folk tale "THE PEARL" by John Steinbeck is so lyrical and beautifully written .It's short and intriguing, simple in plot with a few characters involved in the story with strong impact. This is the story of poor Mexican Pearl diver Kino, his wife Juana and their son, illustrate the fall from innocence of people who had assumed that finding wealth would erase their problems .It's a story of greed, story of hope (a hope of Kino to live better life, a hope to educate his son), a story of struggle what Mexican people face against racial discrimination, class division. If I'm going to tell more than this about the story then it became spoiler to you all .This is my first book by Nobel Laureate John Steinbeck. And I find his work is strong and thought provoking as well as marvellous as literature wise at the same time.
