How would you like to be the son of Woody Guthrie? But Arlo carved out a niche for himself with this, his debut album, which features that beloved 18-minute title cut and the lovely Chilling of the Evening.

Title: Suddenly, I'm back in high school `
Review: My friend Tommy "The Juice" Mioduszewski gave me a copy of this in vinyl as a Christmas present in high school. It was the best gift I receives that year and I still have it. I recently reviewed a car book and in it, Arlo Guthrie is interviewed and all of a sudden, I needed to hear Alice's Restaurant. While I make sure that I listen every Thanksgiving to the local NYC radio's rebroadcast of Alice's Restaurant - played at noon - digging out the LP for a casual listen is always just a little too much work. Apple's iTunes store only sells the whole album so buying the CD from Amazon (with it's very cool cloud music feature) made the most sense. What a great album - it's a lot more than just the lead tune! This album is a time capsule. Singing an anti-war song at the height of the Viet Nam war was what a 17 year-old High School senior did. I cherished my draft deferment since a friend - barely a year older - had just been drafted, sent to "Nam" and, sadly, killed by a land mine. Arlo captured the spirit of a generation in a 20 minute musical monologue - peppered with laughs, irony and a simple to sing chorus. I even learned how to play (poorly) the musical lead on the guitar and played it with a smile on my face back when I lived under the shadow of a one-A draft status. You don't have to be of a certain age to enjoy this album but if you lived through the '60's and thought that the Viet Nam war was a tragic mistake, this album will bring back a flood of memories. Remember, if you want to end war and stuff, you gotta sing LOUD.

Title: A Timeless Classic!
Review: I heard *Alice's Restaurant* for the first time on the radio in 1967 and I almost drove off the road- it caught my attention both for what the lyrics were saying and the fact that it was long (18:22 min.) and kept going and going and...I pulled over on a cul-de-sac in Ocean Beach, California facing the beautiful Pacific Ocean to listen without distraction. WOW!Mind you, I was on my way back to the Navy base farther south to board a war ship and leave for a second tour in Vietnam. "To be or not to be?", that is, leave or stay? Duty to the Navy won the decision, so instead of bailing, I did the next best thing and went to a music store, picked-up the album and returned to my ship so I could share it with my fellow shipmates. They would just love these lyrics before going back to war:"...and maybe, just maybe...", as the lyrics toward the end say, "...if 50 people come in and sing a bar of Alice's Restaurant, it may cause a movement: The Alice's Restaurant Massacre Movement." ...and the war would end, hopefully.Alice's Restaurant is my most loaned out, never returned or ripped-off album and I now have this CD with a pit bull posted next to it- just kidding. This is an all-time favorite classic from the wild `60's with a timeless message and it is well worth sharing with generations to come. There was another war protest song playing at the same time by the group, "Country Joe and The Fish"- with a song titled, "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag". Very different from Guthrie's style, but potent.

Title: Always love listening at Thanksgiving...
Review: Now I no longer have to search thru the radio stations on Thanksgiving to find this being played. We like to listen on the way to family gatherings on Thanksgiving. Now we have our own CD to listen...traditions!

Title: wonderful nostalgic album
Review: I wanted to give it 5 stars, but the title song is a little dated. Its still funny, and I still like the other songs on the album. Some of them are wistful and the others silly. For those who don't know the title song takes up half the DVD, and a movie was made with Arlo based on it. Its not much of a song; its more of a stand up routine about the stupidity of authority figures and the Vietnam War draft. I listened to it when I was a child, so its nostalgic for me. Its from a different age when entertainers didn't have to cuss continuously to get their point across.

Title: I grew up in these problems
Review: Since I come from just a few miles away from where all this really happened, and lived through the times (the record,by Arlo Guthrie, came out in1967.The movie,by Arlo Guthrie,Pete Seeger, and MGM came out in 1969)I can associate with all these problems-getting arrested for littering, draft dodging, being "too immoral for the army",settling arguments with races, proving who's the most manly by who can do the hardest stunt, how unacceptable "longhairs" were in the southwest until the late 60s,drug abuse, and more

Title: Just as I Remembered It
Review: I'm not old enough to remember when this first came out (I was two years from being born), but my parents did listen to this every Thanksgiving. It was a tradition in our house and I'm sure in many others. I had been teaching my daughter the motorcycle song and decided to look for this album; my parents had sold of or donated all of their original LPs (who knew that they were collectible?). I was glad to see that Amazon still offered this album with the original version of Alice's Restaurant, most CD/MP3s only offer the updated, 20th anniversary version. If you like folk music with a sense of humor this is a must own. Arlo Gutherie was one of the best at his craft. And as he once said himself at a concert in Devue Park in Cincinnati, "if you want to hear good [Bob] Dylan, listen to Arlo Gutherie!"

Review: I own this in the original vinyl, but my husband wanted to be able to rip it, so requested the cd. Soon after I gave it to him, I heard him singing along to it from down the hall. We've loved Arlo from the beginning and this will always be a fave.

Review: A seminal album of its time, but doesn't mean it is past its time. The whole album is worth a listen, but it is the title track which makes this album. In turns funny, satirical and poignant, but in a strange way it still has relevance today. You don't have to be an old hippy to enjoy this record, but maybe it helps.
