Unavailable in the U.S.! Import pressing of this collection from the British trio, the most comprehensive single-disc Cream compilation on the market. Despite the fact the group was mostly esteemed as a live, Blues-based extended-jams outfit that sometimes didn't know when to quit, most of the songs here are tuneful, concise studio tracks with Beatle-esque touches in the arrangements; it's hard to imagine how anybody could dismiss gems like 'White Room', 'Strange Brew' or 'Badge' as excessive. 20 tracks. Polydor.

Title: 60's Rock Royalty
Review: I remember listening to these songs at my best friends house. They were his older brothers albums. They really opened my eyes to rock and roll. Jack Bruces impressive vocals, Ginger Bakers driving beat, and the always impeccable Eric Clapton drew me irrevocably into the wonderful world of rock music.

Title: BEST OF THE BEST
Review: Even forty years later, you can feel the force of this music, by rock’s first true super group and I suppose, the first great heavy metal band, though that’s not how I thought of it at the time. After the Jimi Hendrix Experience (which I did get to hear live), this was the group I wanted to hear most. It only lasted a year, which, for a group with Ginger Baker in it, was probably close to a record. But while it lasted, and regardless of the growing and eventually destructive tensions in the group, it played glorious music. All three musicians were great artists in their separate crafts -Eric’s guitar solos, Bruce’s vocals and pounding bass lines—but Ginger Baker was the heart of the group, and it was Baker who lifted the group above good to extraordinary. I felt this at the time but feel it even more strongly after a concentrated dose of listening to them forty years later. It’s no wonder that he influenced so many later rock drummers, artists like Stuart Copeland of The Police. He showed that rock drums didn’t have to be constrained to mindless rhythm and smash and bang noise. (Although, boy, could he do the flash and bang stuff when he wanted to!) It wasn’t just that he virtually initiated the rock drum solo. It was that he played more complicated but yet elemental seeming rhythms –breaking up the beat into complicated, irregular patterns behind the vocalist or guitar solo. Some of the songs on this collection could have been left off with no loss. I especially dislike, “Wrapping Paper,” the first song on the album. It comes as close as a hard group like Cream ever could to sounding like a clone of Herman and the Hermits. But the best songs –“I Feel Free” (which I used to close a staged reading of an Arthur Miller play recently), “Strange Brew,” “White Room,” and my favorite, “Swlabr” –these are great songs performed by one of the best, the hardest and toughest rock bands ever.
