The President falls for the one man he's not allowed to love... his own Secret Service agent.

Newly elected President Jack Spiers' presidency is rocked from the very beginning, and he's working furiously to keep the world from falling apart.

For Special Agent Ethan Reichenbach, Jack is just another president. He runs the presidential detail, and he's side by side with Jack every day. He's expecting another stuffed suit and an arrogant DC politician, but Jack shocks him with his humor and humanity.

But there are rules against a Secret Service agent and one of their protectees developing a friendship--big rules. Ethan keeps his distance even as Jack draws him in.

It's a lure he isn't strong enough to turn away from.

As the two men collide, rules are shattered and Jack ends up centered in the deadly crosshairs of a hardline domestic threat. Ethan must put everything on the line in order to save the man he loves, Jack's presidency, and the world.

Title: Ethan Reichenbach Follows His Heart Directly Into the Enemy's Hands
Review: Enemies of the State (Executive Office Series Book 1)Tal Bauer2017444 pagesOverall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️MM Thriller/Suspense RomancePlot: Ethan Reichenbach is the job. There’s a reason he’s known around the White House as the IceMan: he never gets chummy with the person he’s supposed to protect and he always follows the rules. A Secret Service agent with over a decade of experience, Ethan is the perfect person to lead the newly elected President’s security detail. But he quickly discovers that President Jack Spiers is unlike any man he’s ever met. Jack Spiers is young, charismatic, and achingly human, unlike the Presidents of old. He’s the kind of man who could change the world if he wanted to. And before he knows it, Ethan is helplessly drawn into friendship with Jack, who is determined to hang out with Ethan, even though they both know better. Suddenly, rules that seemed important a day ago feel pointless and antiquated in the glow of Jack’s sweet smile. And Ethan knows he’s in big trouble. But getting involved with the President would only end in catastrophe, and Ethan knows he has to find a way to swallow his feelings before it’s too late. There’s no way his gorgeous, very heterosexual boss could ever want a man like him. Besides, he’s supposed to be invisible. First Take: Gak! This is one of my favorite series of all time. I love Jack and Ethan so much and I want to read a million more books about their adventures together. Ethan is one of the best book boyfriends– so patient and understanding and loyal. This series has everything: a once-in-a-lifetime forbidden love, life-or-death action & adventure, and a stellar cast of characters. I legit cried at the end of the final story– and then I went back to the beginning and read the whole thing again. Please, if you do anything in this life, read this Executive Office series. You won’t be disappointed. Characters: Ethan Reichenbach is a consummate professional. He’s smart, dedicated, talented with a weapon and built like a beast. In short, he’s the perfect bodyguard. Ethan is loyal to his men and the job, and he’d willingly give his life to protect them all. He’s never had a problem keeping his distance from a protectee, so what is it about Jack that has him swooning? Jack Spiers is a man on a mission. Ever since his wife was killed in action fifteen years ago, Jack has been working to rid the world of evildoers, one general election at a time. But being the president is a totally different ballgame: the never-ending scrutiny is stifling and the work stress is real. He’s surrounded by people all the time and yet still so alone, until Ethan decides to bend the rules a little to be his friend. Praises: Here, the storyline is as strong as the romance. And that’s what makes it so satisfying. The action and romance are blended so well together, and it’s so much more than two dudes falling in love (though, honestly, I’d also be satisfied if it were just that). Speaking of romance, Tal Bauer is uniquely gifted in his ability to make his characters read and feel like real humans– they are fully fleshed out and three dimensional, and NO ONE pines like the characters in his books. You just get sucked right into all the feelings. It’s like a cozy blanket in front of a fire. I just want to burrow in and never come up for air. Critiques: Ok, I’ll admit the action in this book is a little over the top, but it’s just so good and painstakingly researched and Bauer writes it in a way that is convincing. Yeah, I doubt a real human could survive half the scrapes Jack & Ethan get into over their 3.5 book series, and I dunno about you, but I don’t read books so I can spend more time in the real world. I read to spend my time in someone else’s. And Jack & Ethan’s world is fun. So, suspend your reality a bit, and try not to dwell on whether or not you think a real person could dodge that bullet and just allow yourself to be carried away on their wild & crazy adventure. Also, you should know there is quite a bit of political intrigue in this series, but it’s fun politics, I promise. Themes: Faith v Doubt, Good v Evil, Hubris, Identity, Justice, Loneliness, Man v Society, Man v Self, Survival, Power & CorruptionOverall Tone: When you fall in love with your boss, and your boss is the President, suddenly the job gets a lot more dangerous. Prose: 3rd person dual POV from Ethan and Jack. The words are beautifully written and there is serious attention to detail. It’s the little touches and knowing glances that make this book so swoony. I love, love, love the dialogue between them, they say the sweetest, most wonderful things to each other. Tal Bauer really knows how to get my heart racing– if it’s not because the world is ending, it’s because Ethan & Jack are just #relationshipgoals. Steam: 💜💜💜💜 No one writes a love scene better. It gets a 4 because I wish there were more of them. Swear Jar: 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 These two encounter enough life-or-death experiences that heavy swearing is warranted. Cliffhanger: HFN, soft cliffhanger Memorable quotes:He tried to focus on China, on Taiwan, on the dangers of invasion and the complications of icing out a global player in the world’s economy, but all he could see in his mind’s eye was the curve of Jack’s lips and the dimple in his cheek when he grinned lopsidedly at Ethan. He wanted Jack. And not just in the physical sense. Not a one-night stand. For the first time, he wanted everything. The American Dream, the apple pie life. He wanted the morning after, and seeing Jack slowly wake up in his arms. The colors weren’t as bright, the lighting was dim. The pomp and circumstance had frayed edges. He was now in a post-Ethan White House, and the light, the wonder, had gone out of his world. Worthy of a reread? A thousand times, YES. Stand-Alones, Prequels, Sequels, & Tangents: Book one in the Executive Office series. Each book follows the same cast of characters and must be read in order. Tal Bauer came out with a Novella to accompany this series called Interlude: First Noel, which takes place in between book one and two, so I definitely recommend you read First Noel next. Then move on to book two, Enemy of My Enemy.Check out more reviews at the Hopeless Romanticist blog.

Title: Enjoyed the story more than the romance
Review: Enemies of the State was an ultimately disappointing mixed bag for me. It started off very strong. I enjoyed the beginning relationship building between Jack and Ethan and I had stars in my eyes thinking I found my new 5-star series. And then…. around the time Jack and Ethan solidified their relationship…. things went south. They are both likable characters. Both a little too emotional for my tastes…especially since they are supposed to be acting as a senior Secret Service Agent and the President of the United States. There were too many inner monologues waxing ecstatic about the other; too many tears, too much sobbing…but the real problem…was that I didn’t find them sexy together. I had this weird reaction to Ethan and Jack as a couple, that just felt like watching my parents have sex. (And it isn’t because of their respective ages, because I’m still older than both of them.)Jack Spiers, POTUS, was celibate and asexual for 15 years after he lost his wife to an IED in combat. He dedicated himself to trying to make the world a better place and that lead him to public service. When I picture Jack, I see Mr. Rogers (won’t you be my neighbor). A very nice, unassuming, very un-sexual man. I would absolutely vote for him if he were running for President; but when he starts talking about fantasizing about Ethan and coming in his boxers…. just ewwww….NO! Ethan Reichenbach didn’t elicit such a strong reaction from me, but with all his swooning and moping and sobbing; I started to see him as a middle school girl instead of the “ice man”, a player and eternal bachelor” – so he wasn’t doing it for me either. Sadly, their gay-for-you romance was 2 ½ stars worthy but I bumped it up to 3 stars because sometimes they were cute together. The story was interesting if implausible; and enough of the book was devoted to story over romance that I bumped the whole thing up to 4 stars. (also, an indication that I am ever hopeful as I already bought the next 2 books). I liked some of the side characters, notably Ethan’s friends in the Secret Service; and Marine Lieutenant Adam Cooper and his (currently estranged) boyfriend Prince Faisal al-Saud, the Royal head of the Saudi Intel,. I think I would like to read more about their story.

Review: " You know I'm with you all the way."Enemies of the State was a surprise. I thought I wasn't going to like this at all because of the "politics theme" and how heavy it was in the story, even though it wasn't my favorite part at first, I didn't hate and at some point I was actually intrigued. But what really got me in this book was of course, Jack and Ethan.Their relationship was so well developed, slowly showing how they became friends and eventually fallen in love, it felt real, believable.I was aching for both. Ethan was head over heels pretty soon and he knew that this would probably never work out between them, Jack was "straight", he just wanted a friend and oh, he was the President of the USA who Ethan was supposed to protect. While Jack was confused, trying to understand those new feelings, trying to give love another chance after 15 years, it was a lot.Their relationship was almost forbidden, not technically but it would cause a fuss, a huge one but they decided to give it a try, to explore this new thing together.Ethan completely adores Jack, he has so much faith in him, not only because he loves Jack but because Ethan knows that he is capable and willing to make the world a better place, it's beautiful to see the trust they have in each other. The whole world was about to fall apart in this book, conflicts everywhere and the USA, Jack, being in the middle of it. I was confused most of the time, but after the middle of the book, things started to make more sense and also to get more intense, it was just like an action movie. And it broke my heart into million pieces.I loved how it ended and I'm already starting the next book!

Brillant.

Review: I was midway through reading another book when I started this on audible (I usually have an audiobook and actual book both on the go at once). And then the other book was shelved and I was obsessively reading about Jack and Ethan.God I loved them. What a great and cleverly complex story, a wonderful romance between two strong and powerful men, I loved the supporting cast and the who-done-it (the mystery person on the phone sure surprised me)!I’m so keen for what’s next!!Tal Bauer’s attention to detail and writing that draws you into whatever world he’s created put him at the top of my favourite authors list.
