It was an American who first described the 'Barbary' lands of the Mediterranean basin as 'the Middle East' – a region by which America, ever since its own revolutionary foundation, has always measured its power. Acclaimed historian Jean-Pierre Filiu and award-winning artist David B. here tell the story of the blockades, broadsides and betrayals of this foreign affair – a wary co-dependency that, from the Epic of Gilgamesh to the Eisenhower era, and from gold to oil, has continued to define our modern world.

Title: Not to be Under-Estimated
Review: Jean Pierre depicts the history, going way back, of the conflict in the Middle East; and then, how the West got involved. Personalities are all equally characterized in cartoon-poking fun at all leaders and policies. The historical aspect is condensed with major cultures jockeying for power in the Mediterranean and Middle East. This basic history is fun and easy read.

Title: I wish it was longer!
Review: The B&W illustrations are simple yet very beautiful and accurate. The writer is very skilled. I was able to finish reading this whole book in under 2 hours though so my only criticism is that this wasn't long enough. This is a must-have book for anyone interested in US/Middle East history!

Title: Awesome!
Review: A very good synopsis of the US - Middle East relations. I was skeptical of the graphic format, but was absolutely hooked by the first page.

Title: Best of Enemies
Review: Probably the shortest essay on the history of Arab-US relationship. But the book delivered it clearly with beautiful illustrations, most of the facts in the book I already know from "Legacy of Ashes", a review of all CIA operations. Overall was satisfied with my purchase.

Title: Inaccurate, fun to read though
Review: The book is well structured. However, I was turned off by its portrayal of Saudi Arabia as a brutal nation. I tried to trace the bit where it claims that the kingdom was founded after killing its adversaries in a banquet, I found nothing.
