The eternal question: Are you a Bert or an Ernie? You’ll find out thanks to The Importance of Being Ernie (and Bert). And this book will show you how to be best friends with those who wear their stripes a little differently.

Bert and Ernie have been friends and roommates on Sesame Street for decades, despite very different approaches to life’s challenges and joys. One collects jokes, the other collects paperclips. One loves pigeons, the other his Rubber Duckie. One sees the bathtub half-full, the other needs to empty it so he can give it a good scrub. But they both agree that having a best buddy is worth all the daily ups and downs.

There are no better experts on living together and learning together. Their guide to friendship will make the perfect gift for any Bert or Ernie in your life.

A Q&A with Bert and Ernie

Q: Why did you write a book of advice?

Bert: I just felt like I had so much to share. I’ve learned a lot over the years … about organizing! Take paper clips. You can arrange them by size, color, material … the possibilities are endless.

Ernie: Gee, Bert, I didn’t realize we were writing a book! I just wanted to use every color marker in the house.

Q: What are your favorite things about being roommates?

Ernie: With my old buddy Bert, I know I’ll always have a friend around. Someone to laugh at my jokes! An audience for my trumpet practice!

Bert: Yeah, especially when I’m trying to sleep…

Q: What's one piece of advice you would give for having a great friendship?

Ernie: Well, it’s important to keep your best friend close. But be careful at the movies, because he might squeak.

Bert: Not your rubber duckie, Ernie – I think they’re asking about us.

Ernie: Oh! Well in that case … enjoy the quiet moments. They’re the perfect time to show your best pal your newest tap-dancing routine.

Bert: Ernieeeeee!

Q: For Ernie: What's your favorite thing about Bert?

Ernie: I love that Bert is so giving. Just the other day, he practically gave me his favorite socks for my puppet show!

Bert: I did what?!

Q: For Bert: What's your favorite thing about Ernie?

Bert: When you’re friends with Ernie, every day is a surpri—

Ernie: SURPRISE!!

Bert: Aaaah! …see what I mean?

Title: Too Cute!
Review: I joke with my husband that Ernie was my first love (though I have a lot of Bert tendencies). This was a fun, whimsical book—bravo on such a great cover.

Title: Awkward read
Review: I'm a lifelong Ernie fan, and my best friend and I have a past experience that makes us relate fondly to Ernie and Bert. Also, I still enjoy my childhood Sesame Street books now that I'm the adult reading the books to the kids. As a result of these sentiments and the usual high quality of Sesame Street books, I pre-ordered this book, expecting that it would be just perfect for my friend and me. Fortunately, I ordered only one so I could check it out for myself before buying a second for my friend. After reading the book, I decided not to get a copy for my friend. The book construction is fine, the pictures are nice, the design is ok. The problem is the writing itself. It's meant to be humorous, but it just isn't. Imagine hearing a speech by someone you admire, and that speaker decides to throw in some jokes, and those jokes fall so flat that it's awkward for all of the listeners. That's what this book is like. Reading this book is like witnessing a life-long friend embarrass himself in public. In addition, the writing doesn't have the Ernie and Bert kind of voice; it does make a lot of references to Ernie and Bert's personalities and to Sesame Street sketches, but it's hard to imagine this book's words in the voices of Ernie and Bert. I'd recommend this book only to people who are huge collectors of Ernie and Bert books and want a complete collection.

Review: A Nice book for any Bert and Ernie enjoyer, easy to read and has a quiz in the back to find out if you're more of a Bert or an Ernie. The front cover has sort of a... shudder? Effect? Where you can pull the tab at the top and it changes to The Importance of being Bert (and Ernie), really cool.

Review: I thought it would be more about them being friends but there was a big emphasis on their differences instead. A fun book but definitely not the best Sesame Street book. I recommend Love The Fur You’re In over this one. That being said you gotta love that pigeon loving, paper clip collecting muppet Bert!
