Out-of-print in the US. Though he eventually came to be regarded as an MOR pop artist, Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot emerged from the 1960s folk world, and had as much in common with Ian & Sylvia, Eric Andersen, and Bob Dylan as he did with any '70s AM wonder. Though the title track of IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND was indeed his first massive pop hit, the album proves that Lightfoot was a serious, substantive song craftsman. "Minstrel of the Dawn" is a "Mr. Tambourine Man"-like affair that closes on a surprisingly sarcastic note. "Sit Down Young Stranger" and "Cobwebs & Dust" are the folkiest cuts, and each bears an incisive, poetic lyricism. The bluesy "Baby It's Alright" and a cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" showcase Lightfoot's rootsier tendencies, while "Saturday Clothes" stands out by virtue of its Bacharach-like melody and dinner-jacket chord progression. While he wasn't as edgy as fellow Canuck Leonard Cohen, Lightfoot was clearly a formidable song-poet.

Title: Timeless beauty and the greatest bargain you will ever find!
Review: For those who enjoy the music of the Canadian singer/songwriting genius Gordon Lightfoot, the album âIf You Could Read My Mindâ stands at or near the pinnacle of his unrivalled accomplishments. The superlatives that are heaped on this masterpiece are all deserved, which is a rarity in these days of spin and selfies. This is simply one of the finest song cycles that you will ever listen to now or in the future. Once you have heard the full album (several tracks are of course widely popular in their own right), it will leave you speechless and moved like few albums can. It will become one of your favourite pieces of music, and you will return to it again and again because of how the beautiful chord composition, the flawless execution, and the haunting lyrics of each of the songs make you feel. I am not going to enumerate the tracks other than to say that each is absolutely glorious in its own right (I confess my particular love of âApproaching Lavenderâ and âYour Loveâs Returnâ) and the product of a fertile genius in one of his most productive periods.Let me give you an example of the timeless beauty and power of this album. I recently had a dinner party where some of the guests who are in their mid-twenties and thirties heard it for the first time. Born long after the album was recorded and well-passed the period of Gordon Lightfootâs peak popularity in the mid-1970s, they had only a vague knowledge of the title track. They were so taken with this album that they asked if we could restart it and stop the conversation around the table while we listened to it. At the end, they all agreed it was one of the most beautiful collections of songs that they had ever heard and all of them asked to borrow my CD of it. I know few albums that elicit that kind of response from young people born 25 years after their release.Purchase this album, embrace it, absorb the beauty, and make it part of your life. You will be giving Mr Lightfoot a couple of dollars for his retirement in Toronto, and in exchange he and his band are going to share with you one of the most enduring and beautiful records ever made. I can think of no better bargain than that!

Title: The First Of A Dozen Fabulous Gordon Lightfoot Albums!
Review: I have always been a fan of Canadian Gordon Lightfoot's music. From the first time I heard Peter, Paul and Mary's wonderful covers of Lightfoot songs like "Early Morning Rain" and "For Loving Me", I knew anyone who could write songs like that was a huge talent. So when I got turned onto his own voice and music I was astonished by just how good he was (and still is). This is a perfect album because, like several of his other releases, each of the dozen songs included is something you smile at as it first comes on because it is a special favorite. Indeed, the song cycle here is unforgettable. The first song is "Minstrel Of The Dawn", written by Lightfoot himself and a wonderful example of his singular songwriting style, which often relates a personal story, followed by an incredible cover of Kris Kristoferson's "Me And Bobby McGee". No one other than Janis Joplin ever did a version of this that can compare with Lightfoot's. "Approaching Lavender" is a simply wonderful love song delivered with fervor and passion in Lightfoot's inimitable style.Later he weighs in with some of the hits from the album, including "Sit Down Young Stranger" and "If You Could Read My Mind", both done in colorful and unique prose styles that leave the listener to interpret what Lightfoot is talking about. And so on with each of the songs here. My personal favorites are those mentioned above as well as "Your Love's Return", an evocative and haunting song inspired by a poem by Stephen Foster, but I really love them all. If one listens to all of the similarly terrific albums Lightfoot put out over a seven or eight-year period one comes up with literally dozens and dozens of wonderful and memorable songs that could fill several double albums. This guy was far more prolific than anyone else producing work in the sixties and seventies. Buy this album, and after listening to it for a week or so you will be back for "Sundown", "Summertime Dream", "Cold On The Shoulder" and "Don Quixote". They are all great. Enjoy this one of a kind artist and his amazingly consistent flood of terrific and appealing mainstream folk albums.

Title: The BEST version of 'Me and Bobby McGee' I have EVER ...
Review: I've been waiting a long time to have this on CD. I bought it on vinyl in 1970 - now very worn. The BEST version of 'Me and Bobby McGee' I have EVER heard!! (Gordon Lightfoot was the first to record this Kris Kristofferson song - Janis Joplin had a hit with it later) it's the the percussion/clapping effect - on this track which stands out . Alongside the title track, there are some very nice sombre and touching tracks - eg 'The Pony Man' (though not strictly a children's song - it's great if you do have kids to sing this to!)

Title: Gord is Always Golden
Review: I love this entire album. I purchased this album for "Me and Bobby McGee". I didn't know that Gordon Lightfoot had ever recorded that song until I heard it on the radio. Then I learned in the liner notes that Gordon Lightfoot was the First person to record "Me and Bobby McGee"! Very exciting and wonderful version. My cd arrived promptly, well packaged, and in great condition.
