A national treasure in his native Canada and a timeless star Stateside and worldwide, legendary singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot first rose to fame in the mid-'60s when his compositions became hits for Peter, Paul and Mary ("Early Morning Rain") and Marty Robbins ("Ribbon of Darkness"). Both songs are featured on Rhino's newly remastered CD version of the artist's hits compilation Gord's Gold-a Top 40 Album-originally released in 1975 as a 2-LP set currently out of print. This in-depth overview of troubadour Lightfoot's famed Warner Bros. years provides an insightful portrait of an exemplary talent.

Title: Really nice set of easy listening folk songs.
Review: I put this on at work when I got it burned to CD, and the music is real smooth and nice. Some of it has tempo, others are intricate but slower, some are love songs and others are more folksy. I've wanted a best of CD of Lightfoot for a long time as a casual listener, and this one is fine by me. Some of the more recognizable tunes were If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown, and Don Quixote. That's only a few I'm sure I've heard; there are others I don't know the names of right now but feel sure I've heard. All of it is quite good, especially as background music, and some would be great up front in the car. This set does not include Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and I think that's good in this case because it would overshadow some really good songs and make the collection unbalanced for the listener. I bought Summertime Dream as well in order to get Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Title: Almost All of His Best
Review: Fantastic vintage stuff from G.L. and great sound for the money. The only thing it lacks for me isâThe Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgeraldâ other than that itâs perfect !

Title: A CD You Must Have
Review: Gordon Lightfoot's voice is smooth as fine whiskey, and he can tell a story with a song like few others. This is an abridged collection of his hit Reprise recordings, and despite the omissions mentioned in other reviews, he can mesmerize the listener with his gentle style and storytelling ability. I ordered this CD specifically for one track, "If You Could Read My Mind". Clearly, this is my favorite of his many great songs. While I have the 45, the version on this CD has him harmonizing with himself at places in the song. Much nicer than the single version. And we owe his success in the US to one border radio station, CKLW in Windsor, Ontario. Located just south of Detroit, and blanketing pretty much the entire North American continent, This station introduced American listeners to several Canadian artists. Gordon Lightfoot is one of them, and we owe "The Big 8" a debt of gratitude. I'll leave the nitpicking to the other reviews, but know that if you buy this disc, you won't regret it.

Title: Perfectly titled collection of Lightfoot's ealy works
Review: Re-recordings are rarely as good as the originals, and almost never better, but 'Gord's Gold' is a wonderful exception.Gordon is certainly one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our generation, and the brilliance of his early works are brought to full fruition in this amazing collection, re-recorded with the knowledge, experience & supporting cast of a mature and influential artist in his prime. If you are a new Lightfoot fan or an old hand with a long-standing appreciation of his stellar early work, then you will love this collection of perfectly re-tooled classics from a master at his craft. Despite owning a sizeable collection of his early works I have found myself returning to this collection over the decades; it never, ever gets old.

Title: The best of Gordon Lightfootâ¦.
Review: A wonderful album reminding listeners of the many great songs from this artist. Very nice collection of his hits. Many if my favorites included. Would highly recommend this CD as a single source of his work for your music collection. Excellent sound quality.

Title: Left concert wanting more!
Review: I recently received Gordon Lightfoot concert tickets from my daughter as a Christmas present. I had listened to Gordon Lightfoot quite a bit years ago, but not so much in recent years. However, after attending the show, I wanted more and more. YouTube provided some comfort, but I wanted a CD that contained several of his hit songs in succession. Gord's Gold was te best CD for doing exactly that. Like many others, I would prefer that it had included Affair on Eighth Avenue (A wonderful song), but it is a jewel nonetheless.

Title: An Excellent Overview
Review: Others have written quite exhaustive reviews. I can say that I generally listen to rock music but, when I want something less frantic, Gordon Lightfoot is one of my first choices. This particular album, Gord's Gold, is a great one because it captures many of his best songs in one place. Also, because these are re-recordings of them, many of the songs sound better than the originals due to the benefits of comparatively better recording technology and Mr. Lightfoot himself being much more comfortable with the material. While it's true that he went on to create many more great albums this is a sure thing. If you only want to buy one album then this is the best overview to have. I also highly recommend Summertime Dream, the album that immediately followed this collection and contains the riveting "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald".

Review: Only knew Gordon Lightfoot from his 2 regulary played hits Early mornin rain, and, If you could read my mind, how naive I was, my sister who is Canadian told me he is still performing and he is in his 70s, Anyway back to the CD, its one of the best I have ever bought,I play it over and over, the words of the songs are beautiful, I shed a tear when listening to "Song for a winters night" and I adore the Canadian Railroad Trilogy, If you like Gordon buy this fantastic CD every single track is GOOD to say the least, and he has such an easy way of singing.

Gord, I love you!
