Jackie Wilson earned the nickname "Mr Excitement" for his performances as one of the most dynamic and electrifying soul singers of the '50s and '60s, with an extraordinary four-octave vocal range and an ability to deliver up-tempo rockers and dramatic semi-operatic ballads with equal credibility and panache. He made his first solo records in 1953 under the name Sonny Wilson for Dizzy Gillespie's Dee Gee label, before joining Billy Ward & The Dominoes as a replacement for Clyde McPhatter, when the latter went solo. Wilson, in turn, embarked on a solo career in 1956 for the Brunswick label, scoring a landmark hit with his first release "Reet Petite", and going on to chalk up fifty hits before suffering a disabling heart attack in 1975, which ended his career, with thirty of those hits coming during the years covered by this collection. Great-value 55-track 2-CD set comprising the A & B sides of all his singles during the era for the Dee Gee and Brunswick labels, which as well as "Reet Petite" features the Top 10 hits "To Be Loved", "Lonely Teardrops", "Night" & "Alone At Last" along with his other chart entries from the era. Also included are bonus tracks from six of his albums released during from these years. It's a worthy showcase for a unique talent

Title: A mother lode of classic hits and much, much more in this classy package for a classy singer.
Review: Extra note before I start my review: As I post this there is only one review posted and it is negative. But if you read the review it is about a George Jones CD, not the Jackie Wilson one. Iâve notified Amazon of the misposting but I donât know if they will remove it.). Anyway, this is a review of the Jackie Wilson set. There are many reissue labels in the UK that put together compilation CDs that avoid the British copyright restriction by using 1962 as the cutoff date for recordings (which then go into the public domain) but none, in my opinion does it as classy as the Acrobat label. They not only pack their CDs to the maximum amount of content time, and charge a âbudget priceâ, but they include really nice booklets with detailed and well researched notes. This recent one, by one of my all-time favorite artists â Jackie Wilson â is as good as they get in entertainment value. The title is a bit deceiving (but for the good) because, though Disc One starts off with three sides that Wilson recorded in 1952 for the Dee Gee label â using the name Sonny Wilson (and more of a jazz recording with Thad Jones on trumpet and Elvin Jones on drums!) â the remaining tracks are from 1957-1962. And though the COMPLETE singles are here, there are a bunch of Lp tracks as well. In all there are 54 (!) great performances.Except for those rare 1952 Dee Gee sides, which sound a bit worn â the rest sound great. I may be wrong here but Iâm fairly certain that some of the 1957 sides are from an Lp reissue because they are in STEREO and Iâm fairly sure the 45 singles of that period were not in stereo. But they are here and they sound great. The 2-disc set comes with a 20-page booklet of liner notes by Paul Watts (I donât know that name but he does a lot of Acrobat releases and always does his research). There is also full discographic info with dates, chart positions and original record numbers.Just last week â at an âoldiesâ show, I saw one of Wilsonâs sons Bobby Wilson perform a tribute to his dad. It was amazing how he captured the singer who could sing pop, soul, opera and more and was known as âMr. Excitementâ.If you love Wilsonâs work, I can highly recommend this âbudget pricedâ, but not budget-packaged album.I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.Steve RammâAnything Phonographicâ
