Title: The Hobo Philosopher
Review: The Best of James HerriotFavorite Memories of a Country VetBook ReviewBy Richard Edward NobleI have been a fan of James Herriot ever since I picked up that first volume, “All Creatures Great and Small” back in the 70’s.I was not alone. The BBC developed a TV series around his stories and very soon I was watching the series on the Hallmark Hall of Fame here in the U.S.Like his books, the TV series was a winner. This is a lovely volume, complete with pictures of Scotland and Mr. Herriot’s stomping ground and information on the side of every page concerning the tools of Mr. Herriot’s trade and other interesting tidbits – even a few old fashioned Scottish recipes. This is a nice hardcover volume, one that any Herriot lover would be happy to have as a part of his permanent library.I recently picked up a copy of Mr. Herriot’s last work, “Every Living Thing.” Reading this volume got me going all over again. This man is such a pleasure to read. He loved his work, Scotland, and the people whose animals he serviced. And all three areas are usually hit upon in each and every story. It’s a shame he is no longer with us, but he left a great legacy.James Herriot provides a refreshing relief from the pressures of today. Somehow Mr. Herriot can make shoving his arm up the back end of a cow a suspense filled drama or a laugh a minute. The reader cannot help but to love this guy. I can imagine people traveling to Scotland just to say hello to Mr. Herriot and take a tour of the countryside with him as their guide. But you can save the passage. Buy this book and you have it all.I particularly loved the stories about him and his wife. I found myself wanting to rush ahead and find another tale about him and his bride, but I decided that it would be more fun to read them as he selected them.I thought it was interesting to find out that the town portrayed by the author in the book was fictitious and that much of his works are what we call today, “creative non-fiction.”As a writer myself and engaged in the same type of writing about my hometown, this was a refreshing revelation. This fact makes it all even more enchanting to me.James had a long passion to become a writer and he wrote other type stories with little success before he decided to get into writing about what he knew best, his own life and his occupation as a country vet on a tiny Scottish hillside. He didn’t start his writing career until he was fifty.I have him beat there. I didn’t start until I was fifty-eight and I have now published over twenty-five works.Three cheers for us old guys.I’m going to start over again with Mr. Herriot. I have had such fun reading these two volumes, I think I will go back to his earlier works and read them all once again. James Herriot is that kind of writer. You will want to read him again and again. The Hobo Philosopher, Richard Edward Noble, is a writer and the author of, “Just Hangin’ out, Ma.”
