"Dyson's incisive analysis of Jay-Z's brilliance not only offers a brief history of hip-hop's critical place in American culture, but also hints at how we can best move forward." (Questlove)

Jay-Z: Made in America is the fruit of Michael Eric Dyson’s decade of teaching the work of one of the greatest poets this nation has produced, as gifted a wordsmith as Walt Whitman, Robert Frost and Rita Dove. But as a rapper, he’s sometimes not given the credit he deserves for just how great an artist he’s been for so long.

This audiobook wrestles with the biggest themes of Jay-Z's career, including hustling, and it recognizes the way that he’s always weaved politics into his music, making important statements about race, criminal justice, Black wealth, and social injustice. As he enters his 50s, and to mark his 30 years as a recording artist, this is the perfect time to take a look at Jay-Z’s career and his role in making this nation what it is today. In many ways, this is Jay-Z’s America as much as it’s Pelosi’s America, or Trump’s America, or Martin Luther King’s America. Jay-Z has given this country a language to think with and words to live by.

Title: Jay-Z's Impact on Rap and Culture
Review: I'm giving Author Dyson 5 Stars here because of a) richness in vocabulary and rhetoric, b) depth of analysis of Jay-Z's lyrics fused with comparisons to other influential figures like Barack Obama, c) his rhymed acknowledgments at the end, which reflected the conviction of his life's work that includes this book. The cover art and title of the book gave me the impression that the book would be more of a biography of Jay-Z's rap hustle, but it felt more like a biography of Sean Carter, the visionary artist who evolved faster than his audience was realizing, including myself. I'm now introduced to Michael Eric Dyson by way of this book, and I applaud him as an unabashed intellectual who analyzes and stands up for African American culture. The acknowledgments at the end of the book make me realize how hard Dyson's team works to produce his books. It shows. Dyson's literary craft is superlative. Much of the content is political, but guess what? So is rap. Rap has always been a vehicle to deliver important social messages through rhymes. My favorite chapter in this thought-provoking book was 2, "I Pain Pictures with Poems." I was interested in how Jay became so influenced by fine art in his later albums. Jay has been dropping references to Warhol since at least 2005, but we all noticed the intensity rise in the "Picasso Baby" days. Plus, I now deduce that Beyonce's mom was an ardent art collector who appeared to have had a confirming influence on Jay.It was a treat to re-live the musical and cultural dominance that is Jay-Z. Mr. Dyson was an excellent purveyor of it. The book is short but potent. I'd suggest giving it a whirl, especially if you like powerful prose.

Title: A definite asset to your book collection
Review: Great insight into how Jay Z intertwined his life into his music. Dr. Dyson breaks it down vividly and crisply. A smooth read. My only hiccup is he swerved into other topics or other people at times that weren't connected to Jay. I'm not complaining, just putting that out there. This is a definite must read though!

Title: Urban Horatio Alger Story of a Genius Poet
Review: Dr. Michael Eric Dyson always delivers insight into the deeper meaning of hip-hop culture. I am not a fan of this genre. I don't hate it. It's just not music to which I am necessarily attracted. Nevertheless I was fascinated with reading this book. He describes Jay-Z's journey from street life to corporate boardroom while chronicling Jay-Z's genius. I learned that Sean Carter journey is a urban Horation Algier story. I needed a dictionary in one hand as I read. However I love Dr. Dyson's writing. I always come away from his books with an expanded vocabulary.

Title: A Great Rapper And Then Some
Review: Very insightful and informative about a man, Jayz, who is shown here to be more than a one dimensional caricature of a rapper. We are introduced to a fleshed out evolving substantive person. A great read!

Title: A must read on JAY-Z “authorized biographical account”
Review: This book was a vivid reminder of JAY-Z’s poetic brilliance. A showcase of his consistent messaging on the hustle as it pertains to a significant portion of the black community. Finally, JAY’s advocacy for the enhancement of the lives of Black people is eloquently articulated by the world’s greatest wordsmith, Michael Eric Dyson.
