John Prine takes his own sweet time dancing with his muse -- and truly writes what's in his soul. So if it takes him a little longer to write the songs that capture moments and reveal the gently folded human truths that bind us all together, it's always worth the wait. Now, nearly nine years since the release of his Grammy nominated 'Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings', 'Fair & Square' is finally here. Oh Boy. 2005.

Title: Didn't Care For This One
Review: This is classic John Prine with mostly songs I haven't heard before. Love the easy thoughtful way he sings. The instrumentals are always of a melodic beat that somehow get into the soul's rhythm and is very catchy. The stories, as usual, are rich with story and the lines stay in the memory. Usually these stories remind just about everybody of somebody or something we can relate to. Maybe at the time of the event it involved pain, but through the words of John and his music we can smile as we realize we're not alone; his subtle (and not so subtle) wit is the icing on the cake. Every time I listen to a Prine cd I feel like a friend is in the house. Once in a while his rough and somewhat disheveled exterior waxes sweet as in the first song and he allows us to catch a glimpse of another side of him. A really great cd and is a welcome addition to the many others I have.

Title: You don't know what you have, 'tll it's gone
Review: However did I let John Prine slip through my musical experience? No more. I was listening to him, when I didn't even know who the song writer was. A genuine pearl. His first album (CD) 'John Prine' is great. So is his last release, 'Tree of Forgiveness' -- but if you're looking for greatness in between, 'Fair and Square' would be my recommendation. Humor, love, life....all in the most beautiful mix...live within this CD. He sings to his wife, 'She is my everything' -- it is an anthem to his wife, but also to all of us who feel love and devotion to our heartfelt, spiritual partners. Thank you, John Prine. Thank you, Fiona Whelan Prine.

Title: Oh Boy! Great stories and commentary with pleasing musicianship
Review: A friend lent me a John Prine CD a couple of years ago. I may have heard the name in passing, but, had not heard any of his music. I was instantly hooked and, so far, have since purchased more than 20 of his discs. Oh Boy! I also saw him this past spring at a thoroughly enjoyable concert in Worcester, MA. I have music on when another friend comes over to play pool. Though he's not as into music as some, he occasionally asks me to replay a song that has just cycled through the "randomizer". Other than Lucinda Williams' "Lake Charles" and My Morning Jackets' "Librarian", every other request has been for a John Prine tune. Sometimes we'll repeat to a John Prine song 3 - 5 times before letting technology resume control. Ultimately, to reduce interruptions to our games, I added multiple instances of songs such as: "Crazy As a Loon", "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness", "Some Humans Ain't Human", "Long Monday", "Taking a Walk" to my "POOL MUSIC" playlist. Despite this seeming over-saturation, I am far from tired of hearing these great songs. They are also prominent on the John Prine/Leonard Cohen mix collection I burned for use while driving.

Title: go JOHN, sing it again!
Review: John Prine - where was he all my life?I never heard of him, never heard his stuff... until my dear hubby, Norman introduced me. and now I am a fan. we bought this CD the minute it came out. we listen to it over and over.John is different from the average singer / songwriter. nothing like anyone, he keeps his style and doesn't compromise.my man and I saw him in concert - what a trip! at the Orpheus Theater, in Vancouver, Canada. no big band back-up - one guy with a guitar. a few songs, he had a second guitar, and one he had a violin. the entire sold-out theater was mesmerized. standing O's, encores, applause and whistles and shout outs of "we love you John!" it was so cool.Glory Of True Love - love it. deep voice, soft, sweet, lovely.Crazy As A Loon - fun and earthy nice.Taking A Walk - I can close my eyes and be back in that theater. I think this is one that I actually cried at the concert, loved it so much. Some Humans Ain't Human - meaningful and true.Morning Train - very good.Safety Joe - not my fav, but funny.love John, love the CD.
