Dying is what changed Mary O’Reilly’s life. Well, actually, coming back from the dead and having the ability to communicate with ghosts is really what did it. Now, a private investigator in rural Freeport, Illinois, Mary’s trying to learn how to incorporate her experience as a Chicago cop and new-found talent into a real job. Her challenge is to solve the mysteries, get real evidence (a ghost’s word just doesn’t hold up in court), and be sure the folks in town, especially the handsome new police chief, doesn’t think she’s nuts. Twenty-four years ago, a young woman drowned in the swimming pool of a newly elected State Senator. It was ruled an accident. But now, as the Senator prepares to move on to higher positions, the ghost of the woman is appearing to the Senator’s wife. Mary is hired to discover the truth behind the death. She unearths a connection between the murder and the disappearance of five little girls whose cases, twenty-four years later, are still all unsolved. As she digs further she becomes the next target for serial killers’ quest to tie up all his loose ends.

Title: Terrific book!
Review: I received a Kindle for Christmas and don't have a lot of books on it yet. I saw "Loose Ends", the first in a series by Terri Reid, offered for free and decided it looked interesting enough to give it a try. I am so glad I did! I really enjoyed this book a lot. Easy to read, interesting story line and great character development make this a great book for an afternoon of reading. I liked it so much, I have since ordered and read books 2 and 3, found them just as good and ordered book 4 immediately after I finished 2 and 3. And I'm thrilled to see that there are at least a few more after that! I like mysteries, I like paranormal and I like a little love interest thrown in for good measure. This book has all three. The storyline is easy to follow, the characters are well developed and you don't need to suspend your disbelief too much to enjoy it. One thing I found refreshing is the old fashioned love story development. Don't get me wrong, I like the sex in a lot of the paranormal romances I read, but it was so refreshing to read a story where the love and passion is allowed to develop slowly. Mary O'Reilly is a strong, intelligent, and pretty former Chicago multi-decorated cop who was shot in the line of duty. She died for a time and went "into the light" where she was offered the chance to go back to the living with a little "extra" gift she could use to help lost souls. Yeah, Mary sees and communicates with ghosts. Chicago was too stimulating for her with all the ghosts wanting her attention, so she moves to a small town and opens a business as a private investigator where she helps her clients, both living and dead. Of course most of the town thinks she's crazy, of course she has two eccentric friends who do believe her, of course she meets her true love there, of course he's a cop, of course he has a tragic past that must be dealt with and of course someone gets murdered to bring all these characters together. If that sounds predictable, be assured that the story line is interesting enough to overcome that.I read Lara Adrian, Nalini Singh, Lynn Viehl, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Carrie Vaughn, Anne Perry, JD Robb, Charlaine Harris, Jonathan and Faye Kellerman and Mary Higgins Clark among many others. Now Terri Reid is on my list of favorites, too. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good mystery, a little suspense and some paranormal and romance thrown in for good measure.

Title: Well done! Love it!
Review: This was a page-turner, for sure! I loved the whole book, and love the way the author writes. The characters are clearly developed, and very loveable (the good guys), and even the bad guys are built in a way that you love to hate them. The scenes are clear, easy to picture myself there, even though I've never been there. There's plenty of action to keep the story moving.I would have rated it 4.9 if that were possible, and would have given it a 5 if but for a few things. I know most review readers avoid the 5-star ratings and go for the mid ratings. We are leery of too many 5-star ratings, without the balance of the lower ones. This book is worth the time and expense to read! Also, quote marks didn't always clarify who was doing the talking. When a speaker uses more than one paragraph, the close quote doesn't come until he/she is done speaking, but the open quote is still needed at the beginning of the second and each subsequent paragraph of that speech. I think the author knows this, but was not consistent in using that. There was even one place where two different speakers were in the same paragraph.I love that this is an entire story, no cliff hangers. But there was something left unsaid - did the editor in chief get the scoop? I can only assume he did. I have read another in this series, and for those who care, it was also a good stand-alone book - I hadn't read this first one before reading the other, and it didn't matter. It was still easy to follow and understand what was going on.Overall, well written! Well done! Well said!

Title: Couldn't put it down!
Review: This series was recommended by someone who loves it, but I've learned I might not even like books others love. In this case, though, I'm sooooo glad I took a chance and downloaded Book One. I love Mary and Bradley and Rosie and that other fellow. I also love the idea of Mary being known for being able to see and talk to ghosts in order to resolve whatever issue is keeping them from passing to the other side, as well as catching their murderers. The plot twists were believable and the characters well-developed. I'm looking forward to seeing where Mary and Bradley's relationship goes in Book Two. Well done, Ms Reid!

Review: I found that the suspenseful and horror parts were well-written and kept me hooked on, but the humour felt a bit lame. I like it that the author has chosen to not go into the backstories of the characters, considering that this is the first of this series, and maybe she tackles them in the following books. I also like that the romantic angle is something to look forward to in the next book. These choices kept the story contained and focussed for me.There are very few editing errors, and overall the book was a quick, engaging read. But this story contains themes of child molestation and violence, so be duly warned if that's a trigger for you.

Review: I absolutely loved this!!! Former Cop turned Private Investigator, Mary is able to see the ghosts of murdered persons, and makes her living (more or less) solving those murder cases. Her current case involves high ranking personalities, a case of murdered children 24 years ago, and a hunky charming new Police Chief.Add to that a brilliant narration style, a fast paced plots, quirky characters, witty dialogues and lots of humour, and you end up with a book you will not want to put down until you've read the last page.Praise as well for both author and editor, I only noticed one little error and was too busy continuing with the story to even bother reporting it.Definitely a recommendation from me, and I would love to read the other books in this series.
