With more than 750 wins, Dr. Jay Martin is the winningest men's soccer coach in all NCAA divisions. His excellence over four decades is second to none, and he offers the secret to his success in this book. He suggests that coaches do not make players better; only players make players better. So then, what is the job of the coach? According to Dr. Martin, a coach's job is to create an environment where the players can get better (the coaching) and want to get better (the players' motivation). A good coach creates an environment that is motivating, challenging, and fun! This book is a road map all coaches can use to create an environment that is sustainable over time. In nine lessons, Dr. Martin presents the steps he uses to create a winning team environment. He believes that leaders create the culture, the culture determines acceptable behaviors, and these behaviors are necessary to sustain the winning culture.

Title: A coaching & leadership book, not just for soccer coaches
Review: I encouraged my wife, a business leader & a manager of accountants, to read this book & she garnered a positive impact from the ideas Dr. Martin espouses. Like most people who win a lot, winning is the consequence of THE PROCESS, which is more important than the result. Jay's teams' processes are robust & adaptable to many environments & will help anyone put in place some guardrails to ensure success.

Review: It's about time Dr. Jay Martin finally shared what has underpinned one of the most successful coaching careers in any sport. As a disclaimer, I had the privilege to be part of the Ohio Wesleyan program in the 90's, winning the school's first National Championship. I have seen firsthand the culture which Jay so eloquently describes in this book which has seen the program stay at the top for nearly 4 decades. So many teams and institutions rely on certain players to achieve success but what Jay has demonstrated over the course of his career is that a culture and consistency with which it's reinforced day after day, year after year, is what separates the great from the good. You feel the culture, the tradition and the expectations as soon as you set foot on campus as a recruit. In this sense, the program is built like some of the world's most successful businesses, creating the 'WHY' which is greater than any one individual, one team, or one game. We often look at the best and try to work out what's the secret, especially when the success has been as consistent as that of Coach Martin. Well, he has finally given us an insight into what has attracted the best players to come play for him, how these players consistently outperform opposition and what keeps them connected decades after they've left the program. If you're coach, this is a bible!!
