Title: Best MJB Record!!! One of the best, classic RnB albums of the 90s! Should have gotten more awards as it should!
Review: How "My Life" and "What's The 411?" never got that many awards as they should is beyond me. Both albums are often praised as being Mary J. at her finest. I remember seeing those albums along with "Share My World" being featured in music clubs ads like BMG or Columbia House, the days where you would subscribed to these clubs to get your CDs at a monthly price. I never really paid attention to her or her music that much back then, but I always did liked her singles "Family Affair", "No More Drama", and "Be Without You". I was much more into pop artists back then, but since getting older I feel like I'm in the mood for more RnB music. It was recommended to me that I should listen to her first three albums first, then work my way down to the rest of her discography. I've bought "What's The 411?" and "My Life", and from what I've heard so far those two are definitely the ones I like the best from Mary J. I have to give an edge to "My Life" though. I could just feel the pain and hurt thru her singing and it resonates well in her songs. I've read a comment a person had made on Instagram saying that she made the best music when she was depressed. I have to agree on that, even though I don't wish it on anyone to be in that emotional and mental state in their lives. I'm glad that Mary was able to find peace and joy later on in her life. There isn't a single track on the album that I don't like. I love that the songs encapsulate 70s soul with a modern twist. Everything falls so smoothly into place that this is why I highly regard it as one of the best, classic RnB albums of the 90s and should be included on every RnB lovers' list. These are my top 5:1) Don't Go2) I Never Wanna Live Without You3) My Life4) Be With You5) I'm The Only WomanHonorable mentions:No One ElseMary Jane (All Night Long)

Title: Mary's Life And We're LOVIN' It!
Review: An astounding album and an EXTREMELY HUGE creative leap from her debut What's the 411?! Contemporary hip-hop and new jack considerations were very strong on her debut album and there was the awkward step between that and somewhat mechanical 80's musical flavors. This album changed all of that. In their hearts it was the funk/jazz/R&B of the mid 70's that was the musical bag of both Puffy and Mary and the result of their enthusiasm is a fusion of that concept soon came to be known as neo soul. Along with DeAngelo's Brown Sugar this is one of the earliest album smashes to use the form and it's one of the most overall successful. Along with the instrumental samples Puffy built these grooves on and Mary J's newfound fondess for jazzy vocal turns and scat singing provide great results on the drippily disco-funk "Mary Jane","You Bring Me Joy" and the bass popping-happy closer "Be Happy" are such excellent tunes that if these were the only good songs on the album it would still earn a five star rating. But happily the news always gets better from there. "I'm The Only Woman" really puts the title track of Roy Ayers Everybody Loves the Sunshine to work and considering his position as something of a godfather to this then new genre it is a beautiful use of form. Of course Mary's cover of "I'm Goin' Down" rips the entire instrumental track of the song and I've heard it to death but hearing it again reminds me of the excellence and broad vocal inflections she brings to the song. The original ballads including the title track and the deeply spirited "You Gotta Believe" follow in the same path and completely undo some of the mild sterility of the previous albums approch. Ditto for the slightly more uptempo hip-hop inflected jams such as "Be With You","Mary's Joint","Don't Go" and the clever, well composed "I Love You" all have possess that spark needed to make them really stand out as impressive songs. From this point on in Mary J's career she would be forever known not as "the new Chaka Khan" but as The Queen Of Hip-Hop/Soul and all hype set aside the high quality of this album is one of the reasons why she's known for that.

Review: Although a sophomore album, put out when the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul” was still in her early 20s, “My Life” deservedly earned a position of the cream in the 90s R&B. One of the first production smashes for P. Diddy, it helped solidify Blige’s trademark, smooth brand of soul. As easy as it is to listen, songs are often reflecting inner turmoil in relationships, and Mary delivers all cuts with astonishing feeling and persuasiveness. Interestingly, the album did not spawn any strong chart singles, but it does not have any filler either, flows smoothly and with seductive beats, incorporating a number of old-school influences in the integral, cohesive mix. Includes “Be Happy”, “I Never Wanna Live Without You” and the cover of “I’m Going Down.” Of all Blige's work, only “Breakthrough” album from 2005 came close to the overall quality of “My Life”.
