Voted Best Health Book, USA Booknews National Awards. Your genes don't control your health or happiness outcomes; in fact many of the choices you make turn genes on or off. Author Dawson Church applies the insights of the new field of Epigenetics (epi=above, i.e. control above the level of the gene) to healing. Citing 417 scientific studies, he shows how consciousness—in the form of beliefs, altruism, optimism, meditation, emotions, and energy psychology methods like EFT—can trigger the expression of DNA strands. He focuses on a class of genes called Immediate Early Genes or IEGs. These genes turn on within a few seconds of a stimulus. They can be triggered by thoughts or emotions ("I loved that unexpected gift of roses Bill gave me" or "I'm so mad about what Uncle John said at the Christmas party"), as well as spiritual experiences, and acts of kindness. Many IEGs are regulatory genes and turn on other genes that affect specific aspects of our immune system, such as the production of white blood cells that destroy attacking bacteria and viruses. Epigenetics thus influences our health every day.
He coins the new term "Epigenetic Medicine" to describe healing techniques with epigenetic effects. He also summarizes the science behind the infant fields of Energy Psychology and Energy Medicine, both of which offer promising epigenetic medical therapies, and describes examples of the powerful personal breakthroughs being achieved by therapists, doctors, athletes, and entrepreneurs practicing these techniques. The Genie in Your Genes shows that there is a sound theoretical framework, based on credible experiments, for understanding these astonishing results and predicts that the insights of Epigenetic Medicine will dramatically advance the fields of both medicine and psychology in the coming decade.
Best of all, The Genie in Your Genes demonstrates that, by taking control of our consciousness and using it to influence our genetic expression, we can sometimes bypass years of therapy, as well as harmful drugs and invasive surgeries, to, in effect, do continuous genetic engineering on our own bodies. This can produce both immediate relief from long-standing anxieties and neuroses, as well as "miraculous" healing of pain, autoimmune diseases, and other symptoms.
Among a new crop of books that chart the way to a positive health future, The Genie in Your Genes stands out as a scientifically rigorous yet inspiring indicator of a future medicine that links soul to body and mind.
Dawson Church, Ph.D., is the founder of Soul Medicine Institute, has conducted numerous studies in the field of energy medicine, and lectures widely at psychology, medicine, and anti-aging conferences. He set up a network of therapists, the Iraq Vets Stress Project, to make energy psychology available to returning veterans, and through EFT Power Training, instructs sports teams, businesses, and medical offices in the implementation of breakthrough therapies. His other books include Soul Medicine and the forthcoming Your Happy Genes.

Title: Breaching the Mind/Body, Nature/Nurture Divide
Review: Having perused several other reviews, I think many missed the book's point. It is about the new science of epigenetics which explains, from a scientific perspective, HOW external, environmental influences become internalized within an individual and how this external information impacts gene expression. Therefore, epigenetics effectively bridges the traditional divide between nature vs. nurture and mind vs. body. This debate of which of two poles is the most influential has been going on forever. Epigentics explains the physical mechanisms through which "culture" influences individuals on a physiological level. This is a profound advancement in this ongoing discussion since epigentics demonstrates that the answer is "both."Discussion of alternative medicine, such as Chinese notes how and why techniques that were devoped intuitively and through experience actually work, and although pivitol, is not, in my opinion, the main thrust of the book. However, this understanding is enlightening for the western mind which tends toward material determinism (the body and nature side) and eschews the opposite. How mind/body and nature/nurture are related provides insight about why "energy psychology" and "integrative medicine" hold the promise they do.Happily, the book is written in an understandable and user-friendly style. Church's explanation of string theory, for example, is the first one I've actually understood. Having both a strong left (education through PhD) and right brain ("natural" inclination), Dr. Church's explanation answered a burning question I've had for years. While I suspected, intuitively, that the division of matter and non-matter (energy) was artificial, I needed to understand why. Epigenetics helped answer the question in a way in which my Western mind and Eastern sensibilities could feel comfortable. The fact that epigenetics can be applied to improvement in health is significant. In his presentation of this benefit, Church assumes the reader needs to first understand what epigenetics is--the science of it--before grasping how it can improve health. I agree, although figure it must have been difficult for him to decide the level on which to explain. Perusal of the earlier chapters should help the potential reader (e.g., one without medical vocabulary) decide whether Church matches their level and type of knowledge or not.As an enthusiast who reads these kinds of books for "pleasure" (an insatiable curiosity), I'm grateful to have encountered this one. I truly believe that epigenetics is one of the most profound discoveries of at least the last 50 years. And Dr. Church does a stellar job of presenting this complex and important subject. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

Title: Research based and motivating
Review: First of all, if you are a newcomer to Dawson Church's writing, you need to know that his facts are unimpeachable - they were stringently peer-reviewed before publication. What is more, when Church makes categorical statements, he provides research to corroborate them.To quote Church (p212) "We usually look for miracles when we are in extreme peril. In a universe where the miraculous is available to us every day, where discontinuous positive change is always an option, and in which science has given us the understanding that genetic changes occur within seconds of changes in consciousness, it is high time we began looking for miracles as a first resort, not as a last resort." This is a staggering claim. But what is even more incredible is Church's backing up this statement with examples of up-to-date research. The author explains epigentic (DNA based) healing, then gives the everyday applications. It is mind-blowing to learn that a group of people could "unwind" (activate) a sample of DNA using only their thinking. More amazing is the fact that they could do this at a distance - half a mile away. The implications are thought-provoking to say the least.Dawson Church goes on to discuss "consciousness as medicine" and what he refers to as "routine miracles." And this discussion is simple, practical, and as always, impeccably referenced to research. Finally he describes the relevant use of energy psychology (specifically EFT) providing how-to notes in the appendices. This is a book that needs to be read more than once. For one thing, it is jam-packed with information. First-time read, it inspires. After that, the book becomes a first-class reference manual for "You, the ultimate epigenetic engineer" as Church puts it.I don't usually use superlatives in my reviews, but this book deserves them. It can prove life-changing for those who take it seriously.

Title: ***** The Magnum Opus of Self-Empowerment Books *****
Review: One of the hallmarks of books edited and/or written by Dr. Church is that they have a clearly-formed message that is both articulate and important to our self-empowerment. More so, they are filled-to-the-brim with facts that have often been overlooked because they have been overcooked in the scientific literature. That is, these insights were lost in the techno-babble that is the sine qua non of peer-reviewed journal articles. When I read these mumbo-jumbo musings today, I feel ashamed that I ever took part in creating them many years ago. To the point: Church and colleagues have broken the code to wellbeing; we have to believe, intend, and act as if we are in charge of our lifestyles. To do otherwise simply means we don't get the spaceless-timeless lessons-learned from quantum physics yet. Specifically, we treat the laboratory revelations of the observer-effect, non-local information exchange, quantum entanglement, and so on and so forth as irrelevant to our tick-tock 4-D world of space-time. That is non-sense; we -- our molecules of thoughts and feelings -- are made of that field of energy! Furthermore, the key insight is to cohere our head with our heart's vibrations through the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) taught in this text. It is a master-reference for healers as well as those seeking healing. Make no mistake about it, this magnum opus is chock-a-block full of shamanic "epigenetic" soul wisdom.Dr. John Jay Harper is author of Tranceformers: Shamans of the 21st Century and Science of Soul: The End-Time Solar Cycle of Chaos in 2012 A.D..
