“Genius.... It is miraculous to read these pieces.... You must read The Best of Me.” (Andrew Sean Greer, New York Times Book Review)

David Sedaris’s best stories and essays, spanning his remarkable career - as selected and read by the author himself. Featuring fresh and classic recordings, including a new essay and an interview exclusive to the audiobook.

A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice

A CNN and Christian Science Monitor Best Book of the Month

For more than 25 years, David Sedaris has been carving out a unique literary space, virtually creating his own genre. A Sedaris story may seem confessional, but is also highly attuned to the world outside. It opens our eyes to what is at absurd and moving about our daily existence. And it is almost impossible to listen without laughing.

Now, for the first time collected in one volume, the author brings us his funniest and most memorable work. In these stories, Sedaris shops for rare taxidermy, hitchhikes with a lady quadriplegic, and spits a lozenge into a fellow traveler’s lap. He drowns a mouse in a bucket, struggles to say “give it to me” in five languages, and hand-feeds a carnivorous bird.

But if all you expect to find in Sedaris’s work is the deft and sharply observed comedy for which he became renowned, you may be surprised to discover that his words bring more warmth than mockery, more fellow-feeling than derision. Nowhere is this clearer than in his writing about his loved ones. In these essays, Sedaris explores falling in love and staying together, recognizing his own aging not in the mirror but in the faces of his siblings, losing one parent and coming to terms - at long last - with the other.

Taken together, the performances in The Best of Me reveal the wonder and delight Sedaris takes in the surprises life brings him. No experience, he sees, is quite as he expected - it’s often harder, more fraught, and certainly weirder - but sometimes it is also much richer and more wonderful.

Full of joy, generosity, and the incisive humor that has led David Sedaris to be called “the funniest man alive” (Time Out New York), The Best of Me spans a career spent watching and learning and laughing - quite often at himself - and invites listeners deep into the world of one of the most brilliant and original writers of our time.

Title: Typical Sedaris
Review: Ridiculous, real, and hilarious, one of my favorite authors does it again with this collection of short stories. His topic selections often make me cringe but his writing often makes me burst into fits of laughter. He just has such a way with words. Pick it up and read a chapter when you have 5-10 free minutes. It's a better use of time than scrolling social media or looking at your phone.

Title: collection of 46 essays spanning his career
Review: The Best of Me by David Sedaris is a very highly recommended collection of 46 essays spanning his career. All of these previously published essays were personally chosen by Sedaris as representing the best of his writing. This is a collection for fans who will appreciate seeing what he has selected as the best and this would be an excellent introduction for those new to Sedaris.David Sedaris is one of the few humorists who can keep me laughing even if I have read the essay before. As with any collection, not every single piece would have been chosen by me (I believe there were 2 I didn't care for as much) but that is simply quibbling over what is a masterful presentation of many of his memorable pieces. His writing can leave me laughing so hard I'm crying and then continuing to chuckle long afterwards. There are other essays that are serious and heartbreaking as events from his life and family are the subject. Now, I believe it is that time of year to reread Holidays on Ice.

Title: Stellar Sedaris— compilation of classics
Review: This review covers both the print version as well as the audiobook.A solid collection for longtime Sedaris fans, as well as a great intro for those just becoming acquainted with his writing for the first time.Of particular interest is that these “favorite” essays are the choosing of the author himself.I purchased both the print copy & Audible versions because of the added hilarity of hearing Sedaris read his own work.Re: the audiobook version it should be noted that the chapter order differs from the print book.Additionally, a couple of essays have been newly edited, 2-3 pp. worth, giving them a fresh feel. One of my favs, “Incomplete Quad”, now reads tighter, the excised parts unmissed.Chapter 12 (audiobook) is a real treat: A 54 min. long interview by Paul Constant. Sedaris is questioned about his take on the pandemic, how quarantine affects his writing, daily habits, etc. He also remarks on several of his titles, offering evaluations (incl. some regrets) in hindsight. It concludes with a “lightning round”, largely re: his amusing plans upon his demise, such as how he’ll finally ‘get into Yale’.The physical print book: sewn binding, with bright yellow boards capped with cheery red head/tail bands. Dust jacket has raised lettering in a variety of colorful fonts. Pages are deckle-edged, with lt. cream colored, lighter-weight paper*. (See photo)The overall presentation hints at a fun read— and it is!*While I’m not fond of the thin paper so many publishers use as of late, it does make for easier carrying for ‘real book’ loving readers such as myself.(Altho I own e-books & various e-readers, I’ve never warmed to them. Doubtful I ever will.)As per Sedaris... his next offering will be a “second volume of (his) diaries”.As with nearly every title from this author— highly recommended! Thanks for reading,-CC, Amazon Prime Member-Reviewer

Title: A wonderful and poignant reminder of Sedaris’ rare talent
Review: Since this book consists of repackaged stories some might cynically think of it as a quick way to make a buck. However, I would characterize it as a greatest hits album as selected by a favorite band – you learn a lot about the artist and enjoy revisiting the songs. There are, as always with Sedaris, many laugh out loud moments combined with a few cringe-worthy passages as he lays bare his life and perspective and family. Because the stories span a quarter century of writing, Sedaris’ advancing age provides more opportunity for contemplations on success and sorrow and changing relationships as the book progresses. These funny, bittersweet reflections are what make Sedaris a national treasure and any fan should consider this a welcome addition to their bookshelf.

Title: An odd little book
Review: this book was odd. Sometimes the author is quite funny, and sometimes rather bland. The stories are not sequential, which sometimes is confusing. As I said, sometimes he is quite funny. He goes back to his childhood memories to earlier adult memories to the present time. But each chapter is like a in itself. Not a bad read.

Review: Amazing. David Sedaris, amuses, appalls, entertains. He’s hilarious one moment, the next you think should I really laugh at that, but you do. He’s my go to author for reading in bed!

Review: This is the author I turn to when I need a laugh. I find his quirky sense of humour hilarious, and his observation of human behaviour astonishes me. I think we all find ourselves in many of the same situations as Sedaris, but just don't pay the same attention, nor can we put the same comical spin on the situation. A true story teller.
