Discover why reading aloud to your kids can make such a big difference in their lives and yours.

Learn practical strategies to make reading aloud an attainable family goal.

The stories we read--and the conversations we have about them--help shape family traditions, create lifelong memories, and become part of our legacy. Many parents can't get their children to become book-lovers. Other parents lose touch with what their child is reading.

Reading aloud with your children not only has the power to change a family--it can help your children grow into thoughtful, intelligent, empathetic adults.

We all know that connecting deeply with our families can be difficult in our busy, technology-driven society. Reading aloud is one of the best ways to be fully present with our children, even after they can read themselves, but it isn't always easy to do. In this book, Sarah Mackenzie--author and host of the Read-Aloud Revival podcast--will teach you how to:

Prepare your kids for academic success through reading to themDevelop empathy and compassion in your kids through booksFind time to read aloud in the midst of school, sports, and dinner dishesChoose books across a variety of sibling interests and agesMake reading aloud the best part of your family's day

Title: Great book that will be referenced often
Review: I am a fan of Sarah Mackenzie's RAR, I have listened to most of her podcasts, and even so, I feel this book is a valuable addition to my library. For me, this book is freeing. It IS okay to make reading aloud a priority, even with the older children. The first part of the book is dedicated to the positive outcomes of reading and reading aloud-- increased vocabulary and reading comprehension, empathy building, an education of the heart and mind, and more. A few studies are mentioned and one in particular from Carnegie Mellon states "that reading a story gives the brain similar network connections as actually living through an experience yourself." I have witnessed from my "non-reader" a stirring of emotions while reading aloud historical fiction that no excerpt in a history book could touch. The second part of the book is more about the relationship building with your children. It provides ideas on how to make this read aloud culture a reality in your own home, how to pick out great books at the library, and provides a list of compelling questions to get the conversations rolling when a book is complete. I put those questions to the test one afternoon when my girls and I were waiting for my son's soccer game to begin. We went for a walk around the facility and I slipped the first question in. I was amazed. My teen, who told me initially the book she finished was good when I asked a dead end question, transformed as she talked for 20 minutes when I asked a couple of Sarah's questions. Not only that, it led to another deep discussion about a tv series and racism. What?? Just by asking the right questions. The last section has an incredible list of books that are perfectly suited for reading aloud according to age. I know I will reference this often.I love this book. It is a refreshing and encouraging read, and even though I have heard much of the same information from Sarah's RAR, having this information all together in one place is a wonderful and useful tool.

Title: Be prepared to wear out your highlighter.
Review: Be prepared to wear out your highlighter. Sarah has done it again - an encouraging, concise, attainable book that feels like a nice chat with a wise friend. Reading this book has been such a joy, and even as one who has followed her through her entire career at Read Aloud Revival, there was information that was new to me, ideas I had not yet considered, and a booklist that was exciting and fresh. My six children range in age from toddler to teen and I felt that The Read-Aloud Family would be a support to me through all ages and stages. I deeply appreciate Sarah's friendly contemplation of the question I ask myself about pretty much everything I do as a parent (and in general, as a human trying to live a full and fulfilled life), "to what end?" To what end are we (or should we be) spending hours and hours reading together? She answers this question on educational, relational, AND spiritual levels while giving tips and stories along the way that can help any parent and child attain something that can sometimes seem daunting or can easily fall by the wayside. The book lists and suggestions based on age groups is so valuable that I would have made this purchase for those alone!I think this book deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who has children in their lives. Our relationships with and formation of the children around us is of the utmost importance; they deserve the richness, the closeness, and the wealth of story in their lives. I think, that along the way, we may discover that this lifestyle of being a "read aloud family" may just bring us great joy and fulfillment as well.Well done! Truly, what an excellent book.

Title: She calls on us not to miss the greatest opportunity to connect to those closest to us
Review: Sarah Mackenzie in her new book Read-Aloud Family breaks down not only the what but the why of reading aloud with our families. Read-Aloud Family has the same easy-to-read conversational style as Teaching From Rest. Packed with strategies and truth for making reading aloud a part of your family tradition and daily activities. She calls on us not to miss the greatest opportunity to connect to those closest to us, in the everyday. Mackenzie urges us to be fully present, not missing what is right in front of us “waiting for big, splashy, take-my-breath-away moments.” Admonishing us to do away with the notion of the mythical perfectly quiet time, when our perfectly attentive children will be ready to sit still and listen, Mackenzie suggests the opposite. Stop in the middle of your crazy, busy day and do something important. Connect. Connect if only for a few minutes a day (and even while listening to an audiobook!) Connect through the “comfort food” of books. She says that having actual food during your read aloud time does help as well. Reminding us that by devouring great stories we can inspire heroic virtue, nurture empathy; increase vocabulary and language patters but most importantly encourage a love of reading. She calls on us to create a “book club atmosphere” in our homes, discussing and relishing not only the great books of the past but also the myriad of more contemporary literature. The beauty of this book is that Mackenzie has already compiled read-aloud specific booklists by age group, given parents some wonderful tools for engaging in conversation and how to do that as well as appropriate activities for every age. Chapter eleven is one I will return to often. As a homeschooling mom of seven (ages 13-3 months) this is a resource I will return to again and again and not just for the lists, but also for the tools it provides to make connections with my kids.Don’t just skip to the lists! Although they are incredibly helpful, the tools and encouragement in this book are what you need to fulfill those desire to “do something” about wanting to read-aloud more often. So momma, after you order this book, put down your phone, plop down on your couch with enough of a snack to share and start reading aloud, if only for a little while, because it’s one of the BEST ways to connect with your kids today.

Review: It’s a good book, but it came stained with what looks like clear glue patches on the front and back cover page. If there are other sellers carrying this book, consider getting it from them instead.

Review: I read this in less than 48 hours from it being released! It is really informative and encouraging but Sarah Mackenzie is so down to earth and really speaks from her experience of bringing up 6 kids - everything she suggests is easily implementable. The book suggestions are briliiant - despite listening to the Read Aloud Revival podcast and being a family of avid readers I still came across lots of new books. This book underlines how important and rewarding it is to read together as a family, for academic success but also to really connect and build a family culture around books. Sarah Mackenzie then expands on this by adding ideas on how to start reading aloud, at any age, and dispelling common myths about reading aloud. Her own family anecdotes really add to this too.
