America’s most trusted and best-known film critic Roger Ebert presents one hundred brilliant essays on some of the best movies ever made.
Roger Ebert, the famed film writer and critic, wrote biweekly essays for a feature called "The Great Movies," in which he offered a fresh and fervent appreciation of a great film. The Great Movies collects one hundred of these essays, each one of them a gem of critical appreciation and an amalgam of love, analysis, and history that will send readers back to that film with a fresh set of eyes and renewed enthusiasm–or perhaps to an avid first-time viewing.
Ebert’s selections range widely across genres, periods, and nationalities, and from the highest achievements in film art to justly beloved and wildly successful popular entertainments. Roger Ebert manages in these essays to combine a truly populist appreciation for our most important form of popular art with a scholar’s erudition and depth of knowledge and a sure aesthetic sense. Wonderfully enhanced by stills selected by Mary Corliss, the film curator at the Museum of Modern Art, The Great Movies is a treasure trove for film lovers of all persuasions, an unrivaled guide for viewers, and a book to return to again and again.
The Great Movies includes: All About Eve • Bonnie and Clyde • Casablanca • Citizen Kane • The Godfather • Jaws • La Dolce Vita • Metropolis • On the Waterfront • Psycho • The Seventh Seal • Sweet Smell of Success • Taxi Driver • The Third Man • The Wizard of Oz • and eighty-five more films.

Title: Excellent, perceptive critical reviews
Review: Very little negative criticism herein. These reviews are of movies Ebert liked very much. Nevertheless, perceptive writing and viewing skills contribute to produce insightful reviews.

Title: Roger Ebert: Reviewer for all film goers
Review: There has never been a more readable movie reviewer created than Roger Ebert. Not only was he deeply engaging, funny, and succinct, but he was also the Everyman of film reviewers. Roger speaks to movie goers of all stripes and his reviews can be counted on to provide the everyday reader with enlightening information and the film geek with roads to go down to deepen ones knowledge of any number of obscure or little know aspects of the film. I believe it's simply fun to grab any of Ebert's tomes and read a bit before bed because I'm never disappointed and his writing soothes the frayed edges of the day.Ken Resch

Title: Writings from the Master Movie Reviewer
Review: Though I haven't yet read all 100 of Ebert's essays on the greatest movies, I've enjoyed each so far and have added quite a few movies to my queue for future watching. There are so many famous and predictable inclusions in the book, but some oldies-but-goodies that you probably haven't heard of. Ebert is so articulate about what appeals in each of these films that you will find yourself wanting to re watch your favorites and check out the rest. He was truly a great and very skillful reviewer of movies and had a great repository of knowledge about the entire industry. Whether you pick up the book and read cover to cover or jump around to the essays on your favorite films, you will be very entertained with Ebert's writing style.

Title: All his books are worth reading, but this tops the pile.
Review: Ebert gives the impression of someone with a bloated ego and sense of self-worth. But his reviews are very well-written, and I am not surprised he won a Pulitzer. He deserved it! If you had to read only one book by Ebert, go with this.

Title: If you love movies, read this.
Review: If you love movies you will like this book. Being from Chicago I have been reading R. Ebert for 40 years. He has never disappointed. He always gives you well written, insightful descriptions and commentary. He also gives historical information relavant to the movie at hand. You won't always agree with him but he will make you think and will enhance you next viewing. Further, the format provides stand alone reviews which encourage you to pick and your favorite or your unknowns. Perfect for your next plane trip or a sunny afternoon at the beach.

Title: If you love the movies........
Review: If you are a lover of movies, both old and new, this is a great book to read by someone who was considered one of the most influential movie critics of modern cinema. I have seen a number of the movies described in the book and learned something about each of them as to why they probably resonated with me. It is a book that all movie lovers should read.

Title: The Best in the Opinion of the Best
Review: Roger Ebert knows a lot more about movies than the rest of us. He proves it in I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie by selecting some of the worst movies ever madeâin his opinionâand subjecting their plots, scenes, actors, directors, etc., to his scathing affections. But there are some movies even Ebert likes. Here are 7 movies that Ebert lists as great that I have seen and can personally recommend as great. It can be validating to see that a great movie mind can sometimes agree with my ordinary one.- 2001: A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray]- Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon- Fargo- The Godfather- It's a Wonderful Life- The Shawshank RedemptionAnd here are a few Ebert regards as great that I cannot agree about. Their value eludes me, even with Ebertâs explanations and endorsements.- Apocalypse Now- The Big Sleep- Dr. Strangelove- Gone with the WindThis series of books continues with The Great Movies II. If you enjoy Ebertâs perspective, you will also enjoy Ebert's Bigger Little Movie Glossary: A Greatly Expanded and Much Improved Compendium of Movie Clichés, Stereotypes, Obligatory Scenes, Hackneyed Formulas, Conventions, and Outdated Archetypes.

Review: Liked the book mainly because there is information on several movies I have never seen. I may try to get the second book.Movies, like music are like your fingerprint, different for each person. It is interesting to read what makes a good movie in other people's view.

Review: This is a very good resource for enhancing your information/knowledge on the greatest movies ever made. The information is not new since most of it could be obtained online, however for those who like to collect things in the spirit of "Old is Gold" this book is a must have. Just pour yourself a nice scotch and relax with this book in your hand, reading the book will be at least as fulfilling as watching the movies all over again, that too from the set itself.

Review: like all great books of this sort Roger Ebert's essays send you back to movies you have seen in the past and search out ones you may have missed out on. Even when you may not always agree with some of his selections you can still enjoy reading his views on them. Like Pauline Kael and David Thomson he is also a very good writer so even reading about movies you have not seen is never a task.Along with Thomson's 'Have You Seen' this is a great book to pick up and flick through at any time.As Mr Ebert sadly passed away in 2013 we will have no new volumes to look forward to but he has left behind many volumes of movie reviews and we can be thankful for that.
