Title: A no-nonsense guide
Review: As a parent of four children, I’ve gone through the birthing process and was interested in this book as a potential recommendation for my other family members and friends who are expecting their first children. I was looking for a no-nonsense approach to birth, especially in light of all the legal changes happening across our country. And this book pleasantly delivered in almost every way I could have expected. I will definitely be recommending it as a must-read for new parents.The books is valuable in many ways, but if it’s only for the focus on Pitocin, it would completely be worth it. Finding out that most lawsuits in birth include Pitocin in some way is somewhat staggering to think about, something I didn’t consider in my children’s births. All four of them included Pitocin in varying doses, and though it was fine and was administered safely, just knowing the risks beforehand would have made me more cautious in its use.The book also talks a lot about the importance of fetal monitoring, of “hearing the baby” in that way (since the mother can give much better clues if something is wrong). The term “Fetal reserves” was something I didn’t pay attention to at all, but would have liked to know.Overall, I loved the no-nonsense, legal aspects to this book, such as recognizing doctors have differing opinions, or realizing the dangers of common procedures like epidurals. I don’t believe this would have changed the way we went about the birthing process, and the author makes sure not to present any of these facts as scary, or as deterrents to procedures should they be needed. And no birth is guaranteed to be easy or flawless or even successful—my wife also had a miscarriage at 20 weeks, and there was nothing we did or could have done. But being well-informed as a patient can give parents the confidence that they’re getting the best chance for a healthy delivery and baby.
