Title: R.E.M Perfection,Compiled by Peter Buck
Review: There is a kind of magic with R.E.M - they are all still friends after all of these years - friendship over many years is a special thing. That friendship allowed them to create without anger, angst, and can take the listener on a journey, that requires real listening to fully grasp. I believe that this is a perfect compilation, and on vinyl, you can hear it as it should be heard, and as it was tracked, mixed, and mastered in lovely analog. There is something magical about an analog vinyl album, that allows you to truly absorb all of the nuances, both printed and recorded. From the time that the stylus is placed on side one, to the final track on the second (Side 4) I think that this album will transport you, in time and in space. Perhaps to where you were when you heard them and-or saw them on stage, or on the radio. Their love of, and songs about, the late (and perhaps rather bizarre) Mr. Andy Kaufman are there in full glory, "Man on the Moon" and "The Great Beyond", are as relevant today as they were then. As we seem to be living in a Andy Kaufman'esqe piece of performance art, both are not only great songs, but make you look around at the world and go "yep". There is a song that I have covered at my own shows, not just because its a great song (It truly is!) but because "Everybody Hurts".... sometime... I could not have written a more perfect song to help ease the pain of those who are hurting emotionally, physically or both, and I sing and play it with love and respect for and dedicated to, the artistic brilliance of, Michael, Mike, Peter and Bill, as they had dedicated the song to those in pain. This is a beautiful album, compiled and seen through the eyes of Peter, a snapshot, in time and space. Five stars, indeed.

Title: "In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003: a terrific album in every respect.
Review: A few years ago, my daughter recommended several CDs by artists that she thought I might enjoy. (She and I have always shared a love of music.) One of them was “In Time: The Best of R.E.M., 1988-2003."I had heard of R.E.M. before, but didn’t know much about them. I knew they were an American rock band that had a whole bunch of hits in the 1990s and 2000s, and I even knew a couple of their songs – “Losing My Religion” and “Everybody Hurts” – from hearing them on the radio. I borrowed my daughter’s CD and listened to the whole album.I liked “In Time: The Best of R.E.M., 1988-2003” so much that I recently purchased the MP3 version of it for myself. This is an extraordinarily good album. It’s got a very strong line-up of songs, from the ones I’ve already mentioned to others like: “Man on the Moon,” “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?,” “Orange Crush,” and “Imitation of Life.” I find the lyrics of all these songs very original and interesting, and I really enjoy the band’s musical style.I’ve read some of the arguments about whether “In Time: The Best of R.E.M., 1988-2003” really includes “the best” of R.E.M. at the expense of other, better songs. Of that I’m not sure; all I know is that “In Time: The Best of R.E.M., 1988-2003” is a terrific album in every respect, and that all of the songs that are included are excellent.Although this particular genre of music – alternative rock – falls a little outside the realm of what I usually listen to, I now spend a lot of time listening to “In Time: The Best of R.E.M., 1988-2003.” Highly recommended.

Review: I was just browsing through Amazon's selection of cd's and I spotted this at a really low price second hand. I had no REM albums so I bought it. It arrived in good order and on time. It's always a lottery buying second hand, many times the cases are ok, sometimes they are badly broken. It doesn't really matter to me because I remove the inserts and cd from the case and put them in a cd poly sleeve to save storage space. I have bought many albums this way and I have to say I haven't come across a cd that doesn't play yet. As for this REM album I was pleasantly reminded how many superb songs they have come up with. I'm not sure I would investigate their back catalogue further but I definitely like all the songs on this cd. I'd forgotten how many catchy hits they'd had and what a great band they were. I only paid a few pounds for this but after listening I think It's worth paying the full price if you baulk at buying second hand.
