Lifes Rich Pageant is the fourth studio album by R.E.M. This record widened their musical reach beyond college rock boundaries and resulted in scoring them their first gold certified record. Including excellent songs like `I Believe,' `Flowers of Guatemala,' `These Days,' and `What If We Give It Away,' it's ironic that the most memorable moment comes from the garage rock obscurity `Superman,' which is sung by Mike Mills. This reissue is pressed on standard weight vinyl.

Title: Can't believe I forgot how good these songs were
Review: The band had just finished FABLES, which, as remarkable and moody as it was (and still an emotional one for me, personally, to listen to), represented a turning point. I remember a band member at the time expressing doubts of whether they wanted the choices that came with more success. And, the FABLES producer Joe Boyd remarked how the members all seemed to want to have their parts turned down. Their IRS label was frustrated, too. What's with this band that wants to stay indie? So, "go quieter' wasn't an option. LIFE's RICH PAGEANT was the right choice. From the very first song, the very title suggests a band that's decided to strip down and reform, and do it louder. "Begin the Begin" was Stipe's hurdle, and the band's. And they played like they knew it.The songs I remember loving the first time I heard this album still resonate powerfully, and are still relevant. Listening to "Underneath the Bunker" during quarantine doesn't make it any less a BRAZIL-like excursion into whatever studio loopiness fed its creation, or its inclusion on the finished album. And, I love the band for this. That they never took themselves so seriously that they didn't see the fun in putting a tango with demented Slim Whitman-esque whoops on a rock record. For me, the absolutely most beautiful song is "Swan Swan H." One of my favorite lines will always be "A pistol hot, cup of rhyme." Brilliant. And that the song follows "Just a Touch," which ends with Stipe's invocation of Patti Smith's famous lines at the end of her performance of the Who's "My Generation" is perfect, two poets in a conversation. In a rock record.Go, listen to the songs on this album. First time, or revisit. I was called back to this album for "What if We Give It Away." To a particular situation or character, I can't say, but it feels like where some of us are now. That's as direct as that can be put. Listen to it for yourselves.

Title: R.E.M.'s best album, and 30 years later it still sounds great!
Review: In 1986 when the album came out, I was doing anti-war organizing in Ohio, based in Cleveland, and the environmental song "Cuyahoga" made a big impression. I hadn't heard it in ages, and when I gave it a spin recently I was struck by how strong it is. I remember thinking when it first came out that it was clearer, cleaner, and punchier than their previous albums. Later they would move too far in a pop direction for me. This struck the perfect balance -- R.E.M.'s best album, in my opinion. The highlights are "Begin the Begin," one of the band's most intense rockers, the incredible one-two punch of "I Believe" and "What If We Gave It Away?", and of course the fantastic cover of "Superman." The only weak track to my ears is "Underneath the Bunker."--- --- ---One strange feature of the CD I just bought is that the track listing on the paper inserts is wrong, and missing two songs. The disc itself has the complete and correct list. Who can answer this question -- why were R.E.M.'s album covers so bad? This one is among the worst of a uniformly bad lot.

Title: Great but a slight move towards pop
Review: R.E.M. meant so much to those of us who went to college about the time they came out of Athens (I graduated high school in 1985), that I have almost no objective ability on their first 3 albums, they call so much memory and yearning. I can say, however, that Life's Rich Pageant was the first time I started feeling that some of what they were doing was not my interest. Still, a wonderful album, best songs include :"Begin the Begin", "Fall on Me", "The Flowers of Guatemala", "I Believe" and the cover hidden track "I am Superman"

Title: The best...
Review: This was the best REM album of the 80's, in my own opinion. It was a critical hinge point in the bad's career. It saw REM go from all indecipherable jangly folk to a group with a little more depth and range. It was the beginning of the arc that continued with Document, Green, and Out of Time. Each one picking up where the other left off, and none possible without the change in direction that started w/ Life's Rich Pageant.

Title: 5-star musical content, but the Mobile Fidelity LP is not quite worth the added expense.
Review: This is a review for the (expensive) Mobile Fidelity Original Master Recording vinyl LP. Please don't get the 4-star review wrong... I give the seller, the musical content, the packaging, and the vinyl condition all a 5-star rating. The only reason I drop this review down a star is because I am not very impressed with Mobile Fidelity on this recording. Perhaps Mobile Fidelity did the best they could with the original master recording, but the overall sound quality, although good, doesn't come to life nearly as much as their version of REM's Document LP, which has fantastic life-like dynamics and sound quality. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend Life's Rich Pageant, but save yourself a few dollars and get the CD. Or, if you want to get an LP which brings out the best of REM's sound, try Mobile Fidelity's version of Document.

Title: Highly recommended!
Review: I'm replacing all of the albums that I used to have in vinyl and on cassette; this is one my late brother had copied for me back in the 80s. I loved it and listened to it frequently until I gave away my car with the cassette player and bought one with a CD player. I finally replaced this and have been happily listening to it ever since. There are some great songs on this CD!

Sobresaliente.

Review: I believe that this album is one of their best from their earlier days. I bought this to replace a long gone tape I once owned of it and am rather elated to hear it clearer than I have ever done before.I can't be bothered posting a track by track analysis of it, even though it may deserve it. All I will say that it won't disappoint, whether if you are a new REM fan, seeking out their earlier workings or if like me, you are a die hard fan of this fantastic band.
