No collection of Irish music would be complete without the Chieftains, who perform traditional songs without any annoying pop-music inflections or sappiness. A collection of their work for Columbia Records, The Best of the Chieftains is an excellent place to begin delving into their sizable catalog. From rousing foot-tappers like "Up Against the Buachalawns" and "Oh! The Breeches Full of Stitches" to wistful airs such as "No. 6 The Coombe" and "Chase Around the Windmill," it's all highly enjoyable music, performed by the finest musicians Ireland has to offer. I first heard this CD on someone's portable stereo in the Colorado mountains, but your living room should be sufficient if no mountains are available. --Genevieve Williams

Title: The Best of the Chieftains
Review: This CD went down well (along with others of similiar theme) on recent St Pats DayThe Day started with a gathering of Family/Friends at Harrigans (Irish)Pub, at Pokolbin. Service is aways good for us, as my youngest daughter (Rebekah) is one of the Chefs there. By 1900hrs the Gathering was the BBQ in my backyard, we had been quite mellow by now. I think the daughter must have drove us here. However, amongst the celebrations of family/friends I do remember the singing/gigging to the CDs of the Chieftains.ThankyouKimp.s. I hope all those proud to be of Celtic descent, also had a happy/safe St Pats Day with Family/Friends.

Title: Best is RIGHT
Review: "The Best of the Chieftains" is a great collection. I am not qualified to say whether the selection really is the best of their works but the depth and range of tunes is wide; each tune is terrific. I would recommend this CD very highly. I need more time to listen, absorb and learn the histories and lyrics before I could give a more detailed review.

Review: The best of the best. Great for anyone interested in playing these tunes and songs. I grew up listening to this music along with a number of other genres. Easily adapted to any instrument that can play within the range of their range.

Title: Best of the Chieftains review
Review: The best of the chieftains are a pretty good irish or celtic group and have playedhere in the US often. The songs carry out ballads of the irish ancestory line andthe group is quite the irish singing funny type.

The Breeches *Full Of Stitches *Sea Image *The Dogs Among The Bushes *The Job Of Journeywork *The Wind That Shakes The Barley/The Reel With Beryl (Medley) *Up Against The Buachalawns

Title: No it's not
Review: The Chieftains have been around for nearly 50 years and have released around 40 albums. During that time they have had many changes of lineup and engaged in many collaborations and crossovers. To select tracks from just 3 albums from a 3-year period and call it 'The Best of' is misleading, to say the least. It would make a good 'Best of Vol 2', if a selection from the pre-Columbia years had been the 'Best of Vol 1'. The liner notes struggle to rationalize the selection by calling it 'an overview of a dramatic phase' in the band's history. Maybe so. The notes end by saying 'this is only a chapter in an epic tale'. Quite so.That said, there's some first rate Irish music here, perfect for your Paddy's Day party. This is the sort of thing that, if you like this sort of thing, you'll like this. Just don't be misled into thinking you are getting 'the best of'. You are getting 'some fine examples of'.[PeterReeve]

Review: I bought this so that my Irish father-in-law and myself could bond over a good old sing-song. Sadly, it does not contain the lyrics, so he still hates me.

Review: I have enjoyed this album but it's not the Chieftans music I had on an old cassette of Live in China(does anyone remember cassettes?). This "Best of" album seems more traditional but that's good and it makes me want to listen to more of their music. I'm an absolute novice with folk music but the mixing of this "Best of" album sounds heavy on pipes and stings and less on bass and drums which is not how traditional music sounds live. Don't let that put you off getting it if you're like me and wanting to develop a folk music collection, there's great depth in this CD.

Review: How do you condense such a long time into 1 cd. A double would have been better. Having said that can't complain about the choice if tracks. A good intro if you don't know the group

Review: This cd contains 18 tracks or titles, and each in its own rights is a gem and possibly a good introduction to the Chieftains, and their music style, in their earlier days.In my opinion, its one of those cd's that tends to grow on you, the more you play and listen to it, perhaps enticing you to purchase more or the Chieftains and their music.
