They chanted. ‘Release Mandela’. But for three young individuals, their motives are their own…

During a London Anti-Apartheid march, the Daily Mirror reporter Harry meets the impassioned Petronella, a communist activist. Alongside her is Josiah Makoni, a man spearheading his own cause to free his people from colonial Rhodesia. A country threatening to declare unilateral independence from Britain…

Enamoured after his brief encounter, Harry wants more. Why is this woman so intriguing when her political agenda is in direct contrast to her family background? The granddaughter of an English magnate and daughter of a privileged white Rhodesian farmer. Playing with Harry, it becomes clear that Petronella and Josiah are lovers, driving Harry ever more to win her over.

But for Josiah, his desire and passion are for his land. To break free of white oppression. To recruit freedom fighters and take back the power of his country, Zimbabwe. No matter the unthinkable…

The Best of Times is the ninth episode in the Brigandshaw Chronicles. It’s the best of times for some, but the start of a bitter war to come.

Title: Another hit - Simply excellent
Review: If you’re looking for an epic series that gives you an accurate depiction of what went on in Africa during the last days of colonialism, you’ll find no better than Peter Rimmers historical fiction. Also rather objective and unfortunately time has given it all the credit and truth it needs. And the characters are excellent. Follow this family over a century of Boones and busts and incredible drama with ware and peace.

Title: Peter Rimmer never fails!
Review: Once again, I could not put one of Peter's books down. This book follows the chronicles of the Brigandshaw family set in the sixties, and captures the different points of view from various members of this family who live all over the world. I found it so interesting to read this, as it gives so many sides to the story, which does help understand what has happened in real life to those of us from Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. I cant wait for the next one.I am very sad that Peter did not live to see how popular his books are, but feel lucky that his family are still able to publish his manuscripts.

Title: This series is a gem
Review: I’ve been hooked since the first set of 3 came out as a special offer. Each book is superb. This multigenerational saga is spellbinding. Reminds me of Michener whose books I always enjoyed..

Title: Not my favorite
Review: This story was a disappointment after reading the previous ones. There were no heroes, no honorable people, I didn’t really connect with this story like the other ones.

Title: Great Read
Review: I have enjoyed reading nearly all the Peter Rimmer stories, especially Book 9 "The Best of Times." I look forward to reading his latest novels. The stories tell another side of the Rhodesian historical saga which I find most informative having being born in Rhodesia.

Review: I have enjoyed this series from the start. Well-developed characters, judicious portrayal of events of the time. I was travelling in (then) Rhodesia after UDI and during the war, so lots of memories have been enkindled

Review: The saga and it truly is a saga continues. How easy it is to become embroiled in the life of others, to feel part of the story rather than being simply an observer. When the reader can feel the dampness of the London drizzle and then the heat of the African sun it's easy to see why these novels are so captivating. Thanks to the late Peter Rimmer and Kamba Publishing for continuing the legacy.

Review: This is the first Peter Rimmer book I have read. It was a wonderful story - the characters were like old friends and the story relating to Rhodesia was fascinating. I intend to read all his other books now. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a follow up book and I really want to know what happened in Rhodesia and what happened to the characters. Highly recommend.

Review: An other excellent novel, now looking forward to the 10th in the chronicles. All of the author's books are really enjoyable with believable characters and interesting political and economic views. This story is set in the 1960s, and it explains a lot about the declaration of UDI in Rhodesia, about what was happening at that time in the world.
