Title: Great Songs {Very Odd Disc 1}
Review: First a word about the songs: Great selection of songs from one of the best rock and roll songwriters, singers and arrangers ever. If he wasn't underappreciated he was certainly taken for granted. I admire his courage for standing up to big business fighting for principle and winning. Mike Campbell is a superb guitarist and has his stamp on each one of these songs. (as does Benmont Tench). Even my dislike of ELO can't diminish my admiration of Jeff Lynn and his collaboration with Tom co-writing, producing and arranging his solo work. As a fan I can listen to each song as if for the first time and how a great songwriter seamlessly creates meaningful lyrics with music performed by a sensational band. Or I sing along with Tom and band as if I am the only one who knows and loves these songs (much to the displeasure of passengers in my car). One of the great rockers of my generation, Tom it has been written isn't necessarily a Southern (much less a Floridian) talent as if to say "he can't be that good if he's not from California". If you cant hear the poverty, the oppressive humidity and heat in his lyrics and voice you need to play "The Waiting", "Runnin' Down a Dream" and "What are You Doing to My Life"* and hear what growing up in rural southern USA feels like. {*Not in this collection]As I type this I am listening to the replacement CD I requested after my pre-ordered CD Disc 1 Title and tracklist were printed in what appears to be Chinese characters. Well the replacement disc has the same information as the first one mailed to me by Amazon. Who knows this may turn out to be a collectors' item much like The Beatles' butcher cover of "Yesterday and Today"?

Review: I have to admit I had not listened to Tom Petty until someone introduced me to the Travelling Wilburys, Then I saw him singing While my Guitar Gently Weeps at the 2004 tribute to George Harrison, along with Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Dhani Harrison and Prince.I have reached the age when you return to the music you liked as a teenager, in the 60s in my case, and on into the 70s. Ultimately, I love rock music and bands with good guitarists. And a bit of blues.This collection of songs on 2 CDs are magic, from Free Falling at the start, all the way through. I can see from listening to some of these tracks his influence on the Travelling Wilburys album.
